Avalanche Leaders (Defense)
Here's the unofficial list of the leaders (defensemen only) in a big variety of categories. All stats are through 13 games and compiled by me...
Goals
4 tied with a pathetic 1: Liles, Clark, Sauer, Finger
Assists
Liles (5)
Points
Liles (6)
+/-
Sauer (+7) (Scott Hannan is a team-worst -8)
Penalties
Sauer and Leopold both with 6
Total Ice Time
Hannan (23.5 Minutes per game)
Shifts
Hannan (30.3 per game)
Shots
Liles (26 or 2.0 per game)
Hits
Finger (15, 1.7 per game) note that's 1.7 per game he has played (9), not the team (13).
Giveaways
Liles and Clark each with 10
Takaways
Hannan (6)
Blocked Shots
Clark (33, 2.5 per game)
Interstingly, Liles already has 22 blocks. He's on pace to more than double his 68 from last year.
EV TOI
Hannan (17.8 per game)
EV Goals
Clark and Sauer each with 1
EV Assists
Clark (3)
EV Points
Clark (4)
PP TOI
Liles (5.0 per game, almost double the 2nd D - Clark)
PP G, A, Pts
Liles is the only D with PP Points - 1g, 4a, 5 pts
PPGFOI
(number of times a player is on the ice when a PP goal is scored by the team)
Liles (8)
SHG, Pts
Finger is the only D with SH Points, 1g, 1 pt
PPGAOI
(number of times a player is on the ice when a PP goal is scored against the team)
Clark and Hannan each have 6 (ok, this one's not a "good" stat to lead, but it's here for the sake of completeness)
Min/PPGAOI
Highest TOI/PPGAOI (this is good - it's how long a guy is on the ice on the PK between goals allowed)
Skrastins (15.6)

Sakic on the PP point
I'm not sure how effective it is to have Sakic on the point for the PP. I agree that he's got good instincts for passing the puck out there. However, he's out of the mix when scoring chances occur down low and a slap shot from the point will be his first.
I look at what Lidstrom and Phenauf can do for their teams from the point and the fact that they can get back on D more easily and it just doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I understand the concept of putting Sakic out there to just have more offense but I think he's just too far from the action. There's a really specific style of play at the point that just doesn't translate to most forwards. The way Zubov or Lidstom take a pass back to the point, slide down the blue line and blast a shot is just not a natural thing for Sakic but it's an essential part of effective power plays in this league. Liles isn't even doing it though he's the only defenseman on the PP for the most part.
Keep in mind Q has coached Pronger and McGinnis. He should know the value of that role. Then again, there is the Jacque Fricken Cloutier factor to consider.
Re: Sakic on the PP point
I noticed that too. Liles is an excellent passer, there's no reason why he couldn't "quarterback" the PP like Sakic is now expected to do. Liles is an offensive d-men in the truest sense of the term and Sakic works much better closer to the net.
Sakic
I've made similar arguments to that effect before. I don't like them using Sakic back there. And I really don't like seeing Sakic doubleshifted on the PP. I know we aren't exactly overflowing with offensive defensemen, but I'd much rather see actual defensemen back there and give Sakic a bit of a rest.
It would be one thing if it was working, but it doesn't seem to be. I'm not sure the PP is significantly improved with Sakic back there instead up front.

PP Double Shifts
That's a good point DD. I think both Liles and Sakic are getting double shifted on the power play. That can't be healthy for the back end of the power play shift and it's got to throw lines out of wack for a while coming off those to even strength. Is there even a way to track +/- or anything of the team within five minutes of a PP? It would be interesting to see how the Avs numbers hold up after PPs.
Finger
Can we give "youngblood" Finger the tiebreaker for goals cause it was that sweet shorthanded one the other night in Vancouver?
If not Joe...
then who gets the PP time on the backend?
I agree that it is out of character for him, but who else gets that spot? Hannan hasn't impressed me with his defensive responsiblity as yet even strength, so I sure don't want him as a last line of defense should something go awry on the PP. A fierce look from an onrushing forward would shatter Leopold's femur into a thousand pieces, so he's no good. Finger, Clark, and Sauer all have downsides too, mostly that they haven't done much in that role, IIRC.
My vote? Give the kid Cumiskey a shot. Isn't he supposed to be another offensive d-man that will take Liles' and Leopold's job away down the road?
Yup
All he lacks is experience. He's got the skill set, just not the composure. Unfortunately he's going to find himself back down at Lake Erie soon when Skratch comes back to stink up the blue line.
