Game 35: Rangers At Avalanche, Preview And Open Thread

Who the hell are the Rangers? Oh, a team from the Eastern Conference? No kidding. I didn't know there was another conference in the NHL other than the West. I'd heard rumors, and there were games against teams called the Penguins and the Flyers earlier in the year, but I figured that was just the Flames trying to hide their identity in embarrassment for being the Flames.
Oh, the Rangers. The New York Rangers. That team that signed Avalanche Ex-Girlfriend Chris Drury to a long expensive contract and just about capped-out because of it. Yeah, I know them. I hear John Buccigross actually thinks Chris Drury should make it into the Hall Of Fame, despite never scoring 70 points in a season. Drury's cool and all, but give me a break. You know how many players have scored 65 points in a season and won at least one Cup? Way too many for the Hall to hold, that's for sure. Hell, by that criteria Cory Stillman is a sure-fire Hall of Fame player (he's got two Cups and two 70+ point seasons). Might as well give out a Stillman Trophy every season.
But I digress.
Tonight the Avs face the Rangers in what is really an exhibition game between the famous Original Six team from New York and the not-so-famous Lake Erie Monsters from the AHL---due to the numerous injuries plaguing Colorado as of late.
While things may seem pretty rough for the Avs, the good news is that Peter Budaj will get another start in goal and Paul Stastny is playing at home. Those are usually recipes for success.
The Avs will look to extend their undefeated-in-regulation streak to five games. Hopefully the fact that they played last night will hurt the Rangers more than all those bloated salaries for sub-par offensive producers already have.
The game starts tonight at 7:00 PM Mountain time, 9:00 PM Eastern. I can pretty much guarantee that I will not be present for the open threading, but please keep it going for me! Your game night comments are always fun to read.

Seriously
It's about time he doesn't bench the losing goalie, that's the dumbest gameplan ever.

"Good" news on Smyth injury but won't play
His neck injury isn't as bad as feared.
Heres the link http://www.denverpost.com/sports/ci_...
Just a strain apparently. Then again they orignally said Sakic's injury wasn't that bad.
Early penalty on NY
4 minutes on Rangers. High sticking on Stastny and he is going to the locker room. Not good
McLeod is angry
Fights with Dubinsky. I'd have to say its a draw. Both players got tangled in jersey.
Damn
Shannahan scores on the power play from Svatos high sticking. NY lead 1-0
Forgot to mention
I hate Shannahan.
Gomez and Drury with the assists. Good for them, bastards.
1st period
Great game so far. Too bad nobody is watching....
The worst part is the score but this game has been wide open. McCormick got robbed (twice!!) by Lundqvist. The 5 on 3 was worthless with the Rangers playing a tight triangle. It was like peppering 4 goalies.
Lots of energy from the monsters line though. McLeod-Hensick-Jones are all getting chances. If things continue this way, The Avs should tie it up.
King Henrik
is putting on a clinic. This is ri-diculous. Lundqvist is a stud so far in this one.
Son of Stastny is flying out there tonight. They gotta get one soon.
Have I mentioned that I like the Irishman, McLoud?
lol
could it perhaps be time to distract him a little with scandalous photos of popular women? lmao

Lundqvist
Just trying to redeem himself after letting in 6 goals against the Wild last night, 5 of them by Gaborik... He's been great tonight, no doubt.
Wow dude
You're in Portugal? Do people like the Avs there? Good to see someone in Europe cheers for the Avs.

I missed the goal
I needed to start the dishwasher... Maybe I should start it more often.
Wolski
Claims the avs were his favorite team growing up. Is he trying to get a raise or something?
Hedjuk from Stastny ... again
Hedjuk just made it 2-1, assist from Stastny.
And the Rangers got some garbage bullshit almost immediately to tie it up.

Well
I know it wasn't deflected for sure, I saw it. But that was a super-lucky shot, Budaj was screened and I have no idea how that f-ing puck found its way through what looked like a 1 inch hole.

Screen shot from the point
kinda bang-bang after the puck moved up the boards.
Boots, couldn't see it, just reacted to the sound of the shot and got beat by a laser of a shot.

Gomez scores 3-2 Rangers
Another screened shot, might have hit Cumisky's stick and deflected over Boot's shoulder. At least he flinched the elbow up in the direction of the shot. Theo wouldn't have reacted till next week.
Come on Avs, get the momentum back!
Lappy and Holwig
with the fistacuffs!!
Lappy got some good pops in though before the zebras broke it up.
Clark with the unsportsmanlike
but the Avs kill it off and even get a good shorty opportunity thanks to the Duke and SOS.
Liles
That was Brutal. Yes, with a capital B. Boots had to make a good save in tight right there.
3rd period plan.
Hejduk has been all over the place with 2 goals and most of the quality chances. I think the gameplan of the 3rd should be get the puck to Hejduk.
I agree
Roll Stastny and the Duke, and the Lappy-McCormick-Guite lines as much as possible.
PP for Avs
And Shannhan is complaining. Come on, tack that on!!!! Clark got it earlier.
Back and forth now
trading chances. That is NOT what the Avs want tonight with the depleted bench.
Hitting has picked up too.
I'm the new guy
Hey guys I'm new here. Name is James. Enough with the intro, Go Avs! Beat those Rags.

Pressure is building
Both teams are picking up the pressure. Hensick is aching for a goal.
Hey man
It's defenitely a great game. Budaj saved one there.

Holy ****
Budaj is keeping us alive big time.
by James @ Mile High Hockey on Dec 21, 2007 9:28 PM MST reply actions
Say what you will about His game tonight
But Budaj was largely responsible for that game going to OT.
OT kids
This is the type of game the NHL wants all the time. Open hockey, close game, enough scoring, big crowd.
Sweet ending
It had to end with a Avs win. It just had too.... I can't explain it.
Wolski!!!!
Yessiry. What an ending

Re: woohoo
Was that a great game or what? I'll remember this one at the end of the season.
Lift your spirits
That game made me feel good. Night Mike. Talk to you later James.
One last note
For anyone missing Drury, he was a -3 tonight. Worst on the Rangers.
