Game 27: Avalanche At Blue Jackets, Preview And Open Thread

I've said it before, but really, I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. The Avs are just three games above .500, just two points ahead of Edmonton, and mired in lowly third place in the Northwest Division. To make matters even more brain-melting, the Central Division is just as (if not more) competitive as the Northwest this season, and the Blue Jackets have a winning record.
What the hell is going on?
Luckily there are a number of factors about this game that make me feel better. For one, the Avs have always owned the Blue Jackets, and rarely if ever lose to them (even on the road!). For two, Peter Budaj is back in net and Marek Svatos will return to the lineup after a brief groin-related sidelining.
Also good news is that Ian Laperriere is back and will likely start tonight. Lappy being gone for so long has really hurt the Avalanche, and now that Wyatt Smith is gone, the checking line of Ben Guite, Lappy and Cody McCormick can wreak some real havoc on the ice. And the Blue Jackets had better be careful, because Lappy's not going to be happy.

Yeah, Lappy, it's been bad while you've been away.
Super Joe's Super Groin is still not feeling super healthy, apparently, because he didn't fly with the Avs to Ohio for this game. Let's hope this lower body injury doesn't mean an extended time out for the captain, even if he has looked like he kind of needs a break.
The game starts at 5:00 PM Mountain time, 7:00 PM Eastern. Finally I can be somewhat coherent when I blog! Not that it matters too much, I suppose, since game threads always seem to end up as a string of boob shots anyway. For that, I sincerely apologize. See everyone here for the game.
ESPN preview.

On TV
Since I'm in the FSN Ohio broadcast region, the game is on TV for me tonight instead of Center Ice Online.
What that means is I have run back and forth from the living room to the office because I'm cheap and won't spring for a laptop.
At least I'll get some exercise tonight!
Woo hoo!
Caption
Joe, way to go the extra mile with the caption. Most folks would make it, well, just a caption, but you've put the bubble in his mouth and used that awesome comic book script...well played.
And it's funny to pretend that Injured Reserve Lappy was just away for awhile, doing his own thing, oblivious to what was going on with the team...whereas Assistant Captain Lappy is gobsmacked to find out they've sucked so bad in his absence.

Re: Caption
I'm glad it was funny to somebody other than just myself. I've been giggling ever since I made it.
Early
I know it's still a little bit before the game starts, but Nationwide Arena looks almost completely empty.
Maybe because it's Wednesday and Columbus got a half inch of snow (that's crisis level for us in the Midwest).
So far so decent
The Avs are showing some fight already. Lappy was in the thick of the action down low and almost got a good scoring chance.
Glove hand
Budaj makes a good save on a quick 2-on-1. He made a good save earlier on the Jackets' power play, too.
FIGHT!
McCormick went after a Jackets player already. Not sure who it was. Cody was tossing some huge right hands but not much landed, just him on top of the Jackets guy.
Damn
Rick "The Beast" Nash scores on a bad play by the Avs defense. Budaj's been playing very well so far with the exception of that goal.
Come on Avs.
Hensiiick
Hensick is playing hard early. He's sticking with the puck and showing some fire. He must prefer flying to road games instead of riding the bus.
Stick work
Svatos and Wolski had one of the prettiest puck exchanges ever but Svatos rang the shot off the near post. Damn so close.
1st BJ goal
I saw that Liles and Hannan were on the ice (not watching or listening to the game, sorry). Who made the bad play and what was it?
Re: 1st BJ goal
Beach knocked it up into Liles' chest. Liles tried to grab it but it fell back to the ice and found Nash's stick. After a quick spin move it was in the back of the net.
Liles looked kind of dumb.
First Period
The Avs have played relatively well, putting a lot of pressure on Columbus and spending a lot of time in the attacking zone. Unfortunately, they still can't seem to get a decent shot on goal.
Far too many centering passes and not nearly enough big slap shots from the point.
Hensick has played super hard, and so has Lappy.
Cumiskey is freakin' fast.
Let's hope they keep the pressure up in the second---if they do, they've got a great shot of coming back.
Some chances
The Avs are still getting a few chances here and there, and still controlling the play, but they didn't do crap on the last power play.
I'm getting frustrated again.
#*&^%%* Commercial break
Why must Altitude mock me?!? WHY would you air a commercial right as the goal is being reviewed?!?!? I don't give a fuck about how to buy a car online using frickin vehix.com!!! DAMNIT!
by Mike the Avs Fan on Dec 5, 2007 6:30 PM MST reply actions
Scrum!
The Avs fought hard down low and on the replay before commercial, the puck clearly crossed the line.
Avs will get a goal after the review, no doubt.
And Liles must have really pissed of Fritsche because he went nuts!
LeClaire
Birthed that over the line, kinda like a pinball machine. Nobody knew where the shiny silver ball was gonna pop up next.
Give 'Em The Finger!!!
Finger hammers it down low and gets another Avalanche goal!
Don't mind the interference.
THANK YOU SMYTTY!
What he does best!!! Notice how he doesn't run into the goalie, but put's his chest right in his face without touching him. Damn, Columbus is like a rehab center for us.
by Mike the Avs Fan on Dec 5, 2007 6:36 PM MST reply actions
Yep
Whenever the Avs need 2 points, they can always count on the Blue Jackets coughing them up.
God bless Columbus.
Vision of doom
I like how LeClaire can do nothing but stare at a giant avs logo in his face while Finger scores. In Yo Face.
Stylin' Liles
Did anybody else see that huge hip check Liles put on that Jackets player earlier? The one that knocked the guy's helmet off.
I didn't know Liles was capable of hip checking.
Re: Wow!
You are a rookie!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Win...
I highly recommend Adrian Dater's book Blood Feud. It documents the huge rivalry between the Avs and the Wings during the late 90s.
Re: Rookie
Hey, everybody's got to start somewhere! You definitely picked the right team, though. Good work.
Study up on the Avalanche history!
Re: Goalies
Its pretty rare. But if you've never seen one. Here's one from Avalanche history
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I7GA-...
Even the FSN Ohio
guys said that "Budaj gives the Avs that one extra save a night that gives them a chance to win. They don't get that with Theodore."
If it's obvious to the FSN Ohio guys, you'd think Joey Q. would notice it too...
goalie fights
rookie, are you serious??? You've never seen a goalie fight?? Go Youtube "Roy fight Vernon" or "Roy fight Osgood"

Re: Goalie fights
I seriously have the line, "Mike Vernon with a great left, follows up with a right!!" burned into my psyche forever.
I hate altitude
They keep losing their feed or something. I wonder if the snow in Columbus has something to do with it.
Jackets playing hard
Columbus is showing some fire early in the third period. They look like they're tired of losing or something.
Avs need to stay sharp
They can't let up. Don't want to let the jackets back in this. Budaj is playing well though so i'm not too worried.
Nice block
by Skratch. Boots even gives him a nice pat on the head as the play heads out of the zone...
Skratch
Skrastins has been firing some huge slap shots on net all night, too. Finally somebody's doing it.
He's definitely looked pretty good tonight overall, too. Maybe he's taking skating lessons from Cumiskey.
Jackets goal
That was a goal by Brett Clark, with an assist by Rick Nash.
It bounced right off of him into the net. Budaj had no chance.
oh man wtf?
both of those goals by nash were definitely stoppable. this sucks balls come on budaj, skrastins keeps bailing you out, don't let anymore in.
by Mike the Avs Fan on Dec 5, 2007 7:07 PM MST reply actions
RE: on man wtf
Whatever, it was Clark's fault on that last one. The puck was past Boots and heading back out into the zone but Clark was in the way and knocked it into the net.
BJ goal
Rick Nash is a man. Why is he matched up against Arny? That doesn't seem right...
i'm such a horrible fan.
I saw that it was 7, and I was like, "oh! Avs game is about to start!" Then I realize it's been going for TWO HOURS! Oh well, not like I could actually watch it on tv or anything. Dang college. And Blue Jackets.
Bad feed
FSN is now playing the radio feed over a scoreboard graphic. They've lost the video feed, too.
Luckily I got to see the Finger Elbow.
clean goal
from the angle they showed on altitude, I'm 100% sure that it didn't go off clark, in that case Budaj should've saved that easy. if that didn't go off clark it was a hella weak goal
by Mike the Avs Fan on Dec 5, 2007 7:16 PM MST up reply actions
well nm then
did that really go off clark? i hate altitude the only show one replay of the opponent's goal. they never even show the goals of the opponent after the game.
by Mike the Avs Fan on Dec 5, 2007 7:10 PM MST reply actions
Looked like a clean wraparound.
Nash wasn't even slowed down.
Now it's tied up 3-3 from a BJ PP Goal just as the video feed comes back.
I hate you FSN Ohio...
2nd goal
Did the second goal really go off of Clark or not? The third goal was unstoppable though. This blows.
by Mike the Avs Fan on Dec 5, 2007 7:13 PM MST reply actions
Looked like
a clean wraparound to the far post. Boots didn't have a chance. Clark wasn't involved in the play at all. Nash did exactly what he wanted with the puck. Arny had a great view of it as Nash skated past him though, you might ask him.
Re: Looked like
Clark wasn't involved because he was standing still directly in front of Budaj not doing jack except being a human pylon.
Question?
Should I go empty the trash and my son's diaper bin or watch the rest of this equally smelly game?
Apparently
Coach Q took a timeout I think. The screen graphic said he did. Good timing to calm everyone down. Finally something I can say good job on for coach Q.
Re: The hell
No shit. The Jackets announcers have been bitching all night about bad calls but that was a serious flub by the officials. SOS got roughed.
The Jackets have been taking cheap shots around their net all night. Klesla took a full on swing at Brunette at one point, and no call on that, either.
HELL YEAH BABY
woooooohoooooo right back atcha bjs
by Mike the Avs Fan on Dec 5, 2007 7:23 PM MST reply actions
well
that sucked.............................................................................................. .................................................................................................... ..............balls
Seriously
That was just the third win by the Jackets over the Avs in their entire franchise history, and only the second in regulation.
The Avs blew a 3-1 lead, fought back and then promptly gave it up again.
Every single player on Colorado should be ashamed of themselves. They collapsed in the third period.
Seriously the most disappointing result of any game this season, and it's just more of the same these days.
14-12-1 is fucking unacceptable for a team with that much talent.
Joe, DD, Jibbles, Shane, etc.
I beg you.
DO NOT POST A RECAP OF THIS GAME.
IT NEVER HAPPENED.
WE SHALL NEVER SPEAK OF IT AGAIN.
Recap
I'll have to cool down for a while before I try to do a recap of this one. It might just be one giant string of "fuuuuuuuuuccccccccckkkkkkkk".
Save yourself the effort

fewer letters
damnit
They probably jinxed Budaj, because this:
"Budaj gives the Avs that one extra save a night that gives them a chance to win. They don't get that with Theodore."
certainly did not happen. And this time Joe, Budaj wasn't solid in the third period. This blows, now coach Q will put Theodore in. From one crappy goalie to another
by Mike the Avs Fan on Dec 5, 2007 7:36 PM MST reply actions
Re: damnit
Budaj most certainly was not solid at all. But I blame myself. I jinxed him just like I jinxed Theodore in the last game.
I hereby swear to never speak of the goalies during game threads ever again.
Sorry Boots.
quennville?
not that it's going to happen, but if it does, who's the new guy? i don't trust granato. maybe hartley strikes back?
and what the fuck happened? i know nash is more than theoretically good this year, and foote/federov is always good for nostalgia, but how the fuck does 3-1 turn into 5-4? did budaj start speaking french and eating poutine, or was this on the skaters?
by andrew @ Mile High Hockey on Dec 5, 2007 7:38 PM MST reply actions
Re: quenneville
It was on every single player. And just because Theo was sitting on the bench doesn't mean he wasn't to blame, too.
50/50
Boots got hung out to dry by lack of hustle and turnovers in his own end, the wrap by Nash shouldn't have happened, Clark flops like a fish in front of him giving Zherdev a highlight real goal, and apparently Boots was responsible for the first one. I didn't see the others cuz of the lovely folks at FSN Ohio.
That was a lack of heart out there in the 3rd.
NOBODY PLAYED FOR SHIT. Even the trainers sucked ass. And even though he wasn't in the game, I'm pretty sure Theo gave up a soft goal tonight.
I don't drink, but I might start if I have to watch any more of this clown shoes BS cloaked as an 'elite' NHL team...
50/50
I don't drink either, but I will probably start if this season keeps going the way it's going.
Mike, the first one's on me.
well..
I didn't mean to say YOU jinxed him joe, I was talking about the FSN ohio guys, they just HAD to say that. The game sucked overall, Budaj wasn't pretty, neither was our D. I still say we need a goalie. Budaj and Theodore aren't going to do crap for us.
by Mike the Avs Fan on Dec 5, 2007 7:40 PM MST reply actions
wow
you guys will find a way to blame theo even when he goes to another team lmao xD
by Mike the Avs Fan on Dec 5, 2007 7:43 PM MST reply actions
Of course
When he goes to the Kings, who should be willing to take anybody in net by now, he will somehow curse the avs. Hell, next year the Kings could go 4-78 and guess who those 4 wins would be against.
Seriously..
who has a goalie that they'll give us for our spare parts? Nobody is taking any of our woeful D off our hands, the offense is the only thing working as evidenced by tonight's game.
Do you people seriously think that we can call up Buffalo and swing a McCormick/Leopold for Miller trade? Bryz might have been the answer, but we'll never know. Wanna ship Finger/Clark, and a pick off to Calgary for Kipper? You think the Rags will give us King Henrik for a couple of minor leaguers and pics? We'd have to mortgage the future to get anybody good enough to satisfy our needs. ROY IS GONE PEOPLE, HE AIN'T WALKING THROUGH THAT DOOR!
My mind can't fathom that our D may have been better last year with Patrice Brisebois. Seriously. You have to be kiddin' me.
We'd need an ELITE MOTHER-EFFIN' goalie to cover up for the boatload of defensive ineptitudes on this team. Fleury? Gerber? Emery? One of the wet blankets in net in Tampa? Seriously, who the hell do you think we can get that will make this nightmare end? I'll tell you who...
a new fuckin' coach.
Thread note
Just for those reading at home, there are at least twenty instances of the word "fuck" or a close variation of it in this game thread. A new record.
Be honest,
You went back and counted didn't you?
That's why you are and shall always be my friend...
Re: be honest
How could I have quoted a number if I hadn't counted?
I used the handy, dandy CTRL + F function.
hehehe
I contributed two of those...
And I have already stated that I would welcome Fleury with open arms.
by Mike the Avs Fan on Dec 5, 2007 7:51 PM MST up reply actions
Have you watched Fleury??
You're not one of those 13-year-olds on the GSBB with all the "OMGWTFMAFBBQ his pads are teh roxxors!!?!?!??!!!" are you?
Watch a Pens game and count the ginourmous rebounds he kicks out. He doesn't win many games, the Pens win games despite him. He's the streakiest goalie I've ever seen.
What about?
If Gerber keeps playing well, Emery could become trade bait in Ottawa. Emery is a total wild card though and maybe no different then the theo trade. He was strong in the playoffs last year though.
Who would you trade though? Would Ottawa want Theo as a backup? Maybe a high draft pick could be thrown in. Could be worth it with Chris Stewart still waiting. Ryan Stoa could be start in the nhl next year.
Re: What about?
I'd take Emery, but for nothing more than Budaj and Svatos or Budaj and Arnason. He's not as fluky as Theodore, but Emery has a tendency to get hurt and get into car accidents.
It's funny because it's true...
...as Homer Simpson might say.
Budaj fought Hannu Toivonen when both were in the minors. Discussion thread about it here:
http://hfboards.com/showthread.php?t...
YouTube supposedly has video of it here
http://www.youtube.com/verify_age?ne...
but I haven't actually seen it because YouTube says the video might be inappropriate so you have to log in or sign up to get access and even though I did than 30 minutes ago my stupid little confirmation email from YouTube hasn't hit my inbox yet. Stupid YouTube.

Gerber
has backstopped the Sens to a pretty woeful record since the ridiculous start to the season. Gerber is a known quantity. He's inconsistent and a little small (5'-11"). There's a reason the Canes won a cup with him on the bench, and the Sens came within one win of a cup, again, with him on the bench. He's a backup.
I'd take Emery just for the fro though.
Well
That's all for me folks.
We'll continue this horrendous discussion about firing coaches, trading goalies and whatnot tomorrow in the "recap." I have a special feature for the recap all ready to go.
Peace out yo
I'm going to go to sleep and hope my short-term memory erases this from the ole data banks...
Another one
Starts right away but the second half is filled with coaches yelling at one another. And Emery is the one I thought about trading for....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rSMuz...
Fleury
I don't care how streaky he is. I think he'll be a great goalie, and either way is a step up from Budaj and Theodore. And no, I'm not one of those kids at GSSB (I don't even know what that is), and I have no idea what that sentence was either lol.
by Mike the Avs Fan on Dec 5, 2007 8:20 PM MST reply actions
Sorry...
Inside joke. GSBB is the Goalie Store Bulletin Board. Pretty good resourse for netminders for equipment and technique. I frequent often for both. MAF has a pretty strong following over there due to his ability to do the splits and his sports-gold beerox (reebox) pads.
I've watched him a ton, and I'm just not convinced he'll ever be anything more than an average goaltender. He's to inconsistent and his positioning is horrible a lot of the time. I'm not saying he's not good, I just don't think he's an upgrade from Boots.
