I just wanted to follow up Joe's point about quality of play affecting the amount of goals scored.
The Olympics, which has fewer teams and has more top-end players on the ice Look at this roster, for the non-medaling Canadians, USA roster, Sweden, Finland and Czech's. Those are some talented talented teams (not to mention the Russians, Swiss, Slovakian, and even the Kazak's).
2006-2007 NHL Goals per game: 5.76
2006 Olympics Goals per game: 5.3
