Game 48: Blue Jackets At Avalanche, Open Thread

Not much to say.  The Avs have lost twice to the Jackets already this season, both times on the road.  The Avs won at home.  Hopefully they can continue their success at the Pepsi Center.

But at this point, with the lineup so depleted and the coaching so bad, I'm just hoping they pull another point out of this one.  I guess that's sad.

ESPN preview.

Game time

The game is on FSN Ohio tonight, so I'll be watching it on TV.  I'll also be blogging from my brand new notebook computer that I just went into more debt to buy.  Yay!

by Joe Dunman on Jan 20, 2008 5:56 PM MST reply actions

Leclaire

Pascal Leclaire, who's won seven of his last eight, is in net tonight for the Jackets.  He got snubbed from the all-star game, but he's been one of the best goalies in the league this year.

by Joe Dunman on Jan 20, 2008 6:05 PM MST reply actions

Theo

Tonight is Theodore's eighth straight game in net for the Avs.

by Joe Dunman on Jan 20, 2008 6:08 PM MST up reply actions

No pressure

The Jackets are looking for the eighth playoff spot in the West, currently occupied by the American Red Cross---I mean, the Colorado Avalanche.

by Joe Dunman on Jan 20, 2008 6:06 PM MST reply actions

He's come a long way

It was just a couple of months ago that Jaroslav Hlinka was playing on the fourth line and fighting to stay on the team.  Now he's the top center taking the opening face off for the Avs.

I wish it was based on skill alone.

Top line tonight appears to be Brunette-Hlinka-Hejduk.

by Joe Dunman on Jan 20, 2008 6:10 PM MST reply actions

Jackets offense

The Jackets are trying to put some pressure on with repeated dumps, but the Avs' D is playing well.

Offense looks feisty too.

by Joe Dunman on Jan 20, 2008 6:13 PM MST reply actions

Shots

The Avs are shooting, but no good chances so far.

by Joe Dunman on Jan 20, 2008 6:14 PM MST reply actions

12:45

Jackets are putting some serious pressure on the Avs with some great forechecking and puck movement.

The Avs better wake up.

by Joe Dunman on Jan 20, 2008 6:17 PM MST reply actions

A scrap?

Looked like a tussle was about to break out, but FSN cut to commercial.  I hate it when that happens.

by Joe Dunman on Jan 20, 2008 6:19 PM MST reply actions

Yep

Sure enough, McCormick started a shoving match and McLeod finished the fun with a fight against Toleffson (or whatever his name is).

Interesting fact: the Avs had a fight in the first period of each of their last five games.

by Joe Dunman on Jan 20, 2008 6:22 PM MST up reply actions

Sloppy

Guite is looking rough tonight.  Just gave up a huge chance behind his own net.

by Joe Dunman on Jan 20, 2008 6:22 PM MST reply actions

Svats

Svatos made a streaking attack from the left on LeClaire but couldn't finish.  He's got some speed tonight, though.

by Joe Dunman on Jan 20, 2008 6:24 PM MST reply actions

FSN color commentary

The FSN Ohio guys are pretty good, and I usually enjoy them whenever I catch a Jackets game.

Another fun fact from them:  six Avalanche players made their NHL debuts this season, tied for first in the league.  I wish that was a good thing.

by Joe Dunman on Jan 20, 2008 6:28 PM MST reply actions

PP...wait, no...

Avs go on the power play after Freddy Modin gets called for tripping, but now he's coming out of the box for some mysterious reason.

Wait, now he's back in the box.

I have no idea what was going on.

In fact, it's now 4-on-4, with Hejduk in the box for an unknown reason.  WTF?!

Hooking on Hejduk...

by Joe Dunman on Jan 20, 2008 6:31 PM MST reply actions

PP!

Now the Jackets get called for hooking Wolski as he made a good drive on the net.

The Avs will be up 4-on-3 for about 1:55.

by Joe Dunman on Jan 20, 2008 6:31 PM MST reply actions

Re: PP

Nothing going on the PP.  A lot of passing, a couple of good chances, but LeClaire's been shutting the door on the Avs.

by Joe Dunman on Jan 20, 2008 6:36 PM MST up reply actions

GOAALLLL!!

Jeff Finger fires a huge shot from the point, straight into the goal!!!!  Lappy may have gotten a piece of it, but what a great play!

1-0 Avs.

by Joe Dunman on Jan 20, 2008 6:39 PM MST reply actions

Assists

Helpers go to Hlinka and Lappy.

Columbus has regained the momentum, though.

by Joe Dunman on Jan 20, 2008 6:41 PM MST up reply actions

Assist

I only saw the replay but it looked like Hlinka did a nice job of shaking the D to make the pass to Finger.

Never trust the lunch lady.

by Hardshell_Taco_del_Lowayne on Jan 20, 2008 6:53 PM MST up reply actions

Re: Assist

He did.  Hlinka's been pretty agile with the puck so far.

by Joe Dunman on Jan 20, 2008 6:55 PM MST up reply actions

First period

Despite the score, the Jackets have played better this period.  They've put some serious pressure on the Avs.

But, the Avs "Gave 'Em The Finger," and they go into intermission with a 1-0 lead.

by Joe Dunman on Jan 20, 2008 6:43 PM MST reply actions

Gane on!

Puck drops, second period underway.  Hlinka wins the faceoff.

by Joe Dunman on Jan 20, 2008 6:59 PM MST reply actions

Huge shot

Johnny Boychuk put a huuuuuge shot on goal, but it ended up in the netting above the glass.

by Joe Dunman on Jan 20, 2008 7:04 PM MST reply actions

Jones

David Jones just put a big hit on a Jackets' player.  The teams are exchanging some big hits all over.

by Mike the Avs Fan on Jan 20, 2008 8:54 PM MST up reply actions

Pressure

Tons of pressure now from the Jackets, but the Avs defense is closing them down and collapsing on Theodore very well.

The D looks completely different than the atrocity on the ice at the start of the season.

by Joe Dunman on Jan 20, 2008 7:08 PM MST reply actions

GOOOOAAAALLLL!!!

Ben Guite stuffs it in the goal after about ten tries!

David Jones with the assist.

Re: Radio

They'll change it, I'm sure.  The replay clearly showed Guite was the last guy to touch it.

Guite

and Jones drive the net on the odd man.  Good goal.

Mike @ MHH

by Mike @ MHH on Jan 20, 2008 7:14 PM MST up reply actions

Wow

Am I seeing this right?  The Avs are actually crashing the net and putting huge pressure on LeClaire.  They're constantly crowding the slot.

And Smyth's not even on the ice!

Cumisky

Nah, Finger checked the guy before he was anywhere near the puck.  It was a fair call.

PK

Avs on the kill now after an interference call against Finger.

by Joe Dunman on Jan 20, 2008 7:28 PM MST reply actions

Successful kill for the Avs.  Jackets had nothing doing.

by Joe Dunman on Jan 20, 2008 7:31 PM MST up reply actions

Liles

Damn it Liles, what's wrong with you?!  A perfect chance to shoot it and he passes to a fully-covered Svatos instead.

At least Arnason draws a penalty and the Avs go back on the PP.

by Joe Dunman on Jan 20, 2008 7:32 PM MST reply actions

Maybe

Maybe he thinks if he plays poorly, the avs won't trade him away

by Jibblescribbits on Jan 20, 2008 7:35 PM MST up reply actions

That's the best theory I've heard.  No other explanation makes sense.

Another worthless PP for the Avs.  They had maybe two good chances, but couldn't finish.

I'm getting sleepy.

by Joe Dunman on Jan 20, 2008 7:35 PM MST reply actions

Second period

The Avs are owning the Jackets now.  Colorado had all the momentum going into the second break.  A couple of good shots by Lappy, some great chances around the net, some really impressive drives.

2-0, all systems go.

Let's get a W here, boys.

Lappy still has two assists on the night.

Third period well underway now.  Jackets looking spry, but nothing going well for them so far.

Lots of contact between the two teams but no calls.

by Joe Dunman on Jan 20, 2008 7:55 PM MST reply actions

Never noticed

McCormick looks huge on the ice.  He's no Zdeno Chara, but he's towering over everyone else on the ice right now.

by Joe Dunman on Jan 20, 2008 7:56 PM MST reply actions

GOOOOAAAAALLLLL!!!

Arnason scores off a great fake shot by Svatos.  Nice soft pass directly to Arny who put it past Leclaire with no trouble at all.

Avs up 3-0!

Every season is the worst football I've ever seen.  I understand the game and everything, but it just bores the hell out of me.  I guess watching fat guys run into each other just isn't my thing.

I'm not a big sumo fan, either.

by Joe Dunman on Jan 20, 2008 8:22 PM MST up reply actions

Yeah

The breaks are what get to me. After watching hockey where they stop playing maybe once every 5 minutes, watching theem stop every 5 seconds and watching 5 minutes of playing stretch into an hour gets pretty boring

by Jibblescribbits on Jan 20, 2008 8:24 PM MST up reply actions

Hannan

For as much hype that was on him when he signed during the summer, Scott Hannan continues to make a very minimal impact on most of the games he plays.

I just noticed him on the ice for the first time tonight.  I notice Jeff Finger every shift he plays, as a contrary example.  I don't know why Hannan seems so small and ineffective, but he does.

by Joe Dunman on Jan 20, 2008 8:07 PM MST reply actions

Well

In his defense (see what I did there) I didn't think he was a physical banger, or an offensive powerhouse. I always thought he was unnoticed, he just went out and kept the opponent from scoring.

The last 15-20 games he's been pretty good IMO

Nice play

Leclaire made a long pass straight to Nash who was open during a Colorado line change.  Only a good blocker save stopped Nash's quick shot.

Good lookin' out by both goalies.

He is playing better...

but in no way would I say he's playing well.  Wolski and Svatos are making him look better.  He is "lucky" to be on a line that is producing and he has benefited from it.  He is still way to easy to knock off the puck, he is terrible defensively, and with the set ups he's gotten from wookie and svats he should have a lot more than 4 goals. I've lost count how many times he has shot wide, fanned on, or just completely missed a set up from wookie.
