Around SBN: The Gift Of The 2003 Tigers

Awesome.

That was one hell of a game. Roberto Luongo and Peter Budaj put on a goaltending clinic out there. The both made a lot of highlight reel saves. I'm guessing the stores are all out of those I Believe in Budaj buttons.

Oh, and TJ? Good luck with the apartment hunting in Denver.

Bigger recap tomorrow...

yeah, no question Hensick has been fantastic since the callup. tbh, he’s been our best offensive player — better even than Stastny. He needs to be playing with Svatos more, imo — a natural finisher and a player that can keep up with him. Wolski seems to go well with them too, as he adds some size and puck possession. Jones may work there well too.

I’m thrilled that Budaj did well. as Dater refuses to stop harping on, he lets our more rebounds than some other elite goalies, but hey, so did Roy. If he makes big saves like he did last night, he’ll be fine.

The D had 2 good periods — aggressive without over-pursuing, even some hitting, but seemed lost in the second, alternately playing passive then wildly chasing puck-carriers. No better example than the Henrik Sedin chance that he basically whiffed on after beating Sedin. Foote chased one of his linemates — on the PK!! — above the circles, leaving a 2 on 1 down low with Henrik carrying the puck. Then Hannan, rather than forcing the issue, allows Henrik to walk out from behind the net and conduct a Brunette style slow-motion deke for about 3 seconds while covering the man without the puck. Good job champ, you sure prevented that pass! Way to make a 2 on 1 a 1 on 0 with essentially unlimited time for the puck-carrier. Both of those guy should know better: Foote can’t chase people like he’s f-ing Skrastins, and Hannan must deny the pass while forcing the issue on the puck carrier — a diving slide towards the puck carrier is probably the way.

Anyways. That was better. There’s still huge issues on this team, but I saw glimpses of what they could be.

I agree – Svatos and Hensick seem like they’d be a good combination
