Dater Reporting SoS Signs Extension
On his blog. No other details available as of now. Update: 5 years, 33 million. $6.6M per year. Seems like a decent deal as long as he continues to play at the level he has and develops further.

any bets on the amount?
I’ll say 6 / 42

well, that was a big waste…

Seems pretty reasonable though, doesn’t it? To be honest, he hasn’t been great lately. But I’m sure he’ll break out of this mini-slump.

it does.
as of right now, the $6.5 will make him the highest paid on the team and tied for 22nd in the NHL (with Briere, Redden, Phaneuf and Jovanovski)

actually, since it’s $6.6 million, he’ll be alone at 22nd…making $100k more a year than Phaneuf. This pleases me.

Math must not be one of my strong suits.

Why anybody would want a strong suit of math is beyond me. Wouldn’t all the sharp edges on the plus signs chafe?

Sounds like a reasonable deal to me. Now if they can just get some decent teammates for him.
Go Avs! Let's get some goals!

meh – we figured it was coming
by David Driscoll-Carignan on Nov 17, 2008 6:47 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, It Was Coming
It’s not like Stats is Drury or Tanguay
or
Foote
or Forsberg
or
the list can go on…
I really hope Statz picks up his play this season and looks like he deserves that 6+mil.

I’m glad they got it done. He is a cornerstone of the franchise right now. If not THE cornerstone of the franchise.

The contract was about what I predicted, and it eats up one UFA year.

I’m impressed the Avs got him on a deal that wasn’t like, 12 years long. That’s been the trend for some of these signings. SOS is worth every penny of that contract. He’s consistent on a team that struggles with consistency. I wish he had more Forsberg/Drury moments where he just wills a win on his own BUT that’s a pretty rare thing. He’s so damn solid on the ice you never fear in his decision making.
I will raise a glass to FG tonight. Job well done.

I thought about that too, but with the US and global economy nosediving, the likelihood of the cap coming down is pretty good. Maybe not next year, but it is more likely than not. That being the case, why would you want a $6.6 million hit in 2018 when the cap may be in the low to mid $ 40 million range?
I think it’s a good deal for both sides.

ok i'll say it
datsyuk money, really? He completely deserves the payout, don’t get me wrong, but I guess I was hoping and wishing for a little more of a discount to make the rest of the team better, especially while he’s still so young. I guess the old paradigm of less money for younguns in the NHL is really gone.
The wangs get their guys to take just a little less on every contract, and then they can add rentals to their core like Hossa. And they’re taking less to live in detroit. Can we really not get a discount in beautiful Colorado?

Kopitar’s contract changed things, but the contract for players coming off their rookie deals has changed since the new CBA. I don’t like seeing the middle tier second contract disappearing, which is why I appreciate the type of contract signed by Wolski.
Detroit was better prepared and was fortunate with good timing after the lockout. They had Zetterberg on a sweetheart deal, but he’ll be making big bucks on his next contract. Detroit will have four players (Lidstrom, Rafalski, Datsyuk, Zetterberg) taking up around 26 million in cap space next season.

So they just delayed the cap shock from the CBA right? Lucky bastards…

Another Av/RW comparison
Looking at that nifty nhlnumbers site, with the SoS signing, both the Avs and Wings are committed to around $37M next season. For the Avs, that is without Super Joe, who lets face it, might be about done depending on the back situation. For the evil winged wheel, that is without Zetterberg, Franzen and Ho$$a. I still think someone needs to bring a sign to the Can reminding Zetterberg how woefully underpaid he is. He and Franzen are both due for big time raises. Ho$$a almost has to be purely a rental.
It does seem like the Avs have an awful lot of dough tied up in defensemen who have been for the most part underwhelming this year.

Nevermind
I didn’t realize that the nhlnumbers site isn’t including SoS’s salary in next year’s cap number yet. The Avs and Wings appear to be fairly equally cap challenged next year taking into account the huge raise Zetterberg better damn well get. Hell, if I were him I’d leave that cheap bastard organization out of sheer principle. Has there been a more underpaid player in the league over the past several years, also taking into account his age and what he has already done for the organization? Be pissed, Z-dude. Be very pissed. You should even hold out right now until you get that new mega mega mega deal. Heck, even challenge the CBA and see if you can get way above max.

Be pissed, Z-dude. Be very pissed. You should even join the Avs with a discount just to take revenge on your old team

Red Wings Cap
The Wings are in a world of hurt next season, and beyond. Hossa is gone, make no mistake. They have Zetterberg and Franzen to try and sign, and Hrudler is an RFA. Most of their other Free agents next season are UFA’s (plus Osgood is getting up there in age, and is having an awful season.) They don’t have much help coming up from the minors, especially at forward. And Xetterberg deserves Hossa money at the least, probably should get what Gaborik is asking for. I know Detroit has a history of signing guys oin the cheap, but $7.5M/year is not that far off.
The Avs are in a bit better shape. But that’s enough foreshadowing of my next post.
