Clearly, this team does not fit Ryan Smyth's style of play. Perhaps the Avs are missing that shot from the point, perhaps he doesn't have the scrappy line mates he's used to, or perhaps the team apathy is simply too much for Smyth to overcome. Maybe it's all Granato/Q's fault.
In any case, this relationship has not worked out. I think they should either trade last year's prized off season aquisition, or change up the system. The Avs need draft picks, and they really need impact players. They have skill guys, and grind guys...but they don't have anybody that can really take over a game. They don't have anybody you really fear when they're on the ice.
I don't think any trade involving Smyth is likely in the near future for the same reason I don't think they'll fire Granato. That would be proving that the GM made a mistake. And nobody likes to admit to those.
