Dater and Q still got it.
Dater's latest game recap is up and you'll be glad to know, he still can insult Budaj
It would be tough to put the majority of blame for the loss at Budaj's locker. He did make some fine saves, but big rebounds off his pads have been an issue for the young Slovakian.
While he at least acknowledges the difficulties he faces he manages to overcome them and get an insult in, what a guy.
This from his mailbag shows he still loves Theo
They had a goalie who led them into the playoffs last year and stole a first-round series against the division champs. But they let him go (and yes, Jose Theodore critics, I'm aware of his numbers so far in Washington -- not the greatest). But so far, the Avs' goaltending has been extremely erratic.
Surprise, surprise he didn't answer my question about his hatred of Budaj, If i can find it somewhere i'll post it but the gist of it was asking why he always insults the nicest guy on the team, maybe because he won't get called out by Boods on it.
As for the Q bit everyone's wondering about, without further apu here it is.
Coach Joel Quenneville has been alternating Nikolai Khabibulin and Cristobal Huet
Aren't we glad its somone elses problem now.
UPDATE - I never thought i'd say this but Terry Frei now has more of my respect than Dater, all because he manages to defendBoods AND take a subtle shot at Dater.
Making the Slovak goalie, who recently was the No. 2 star for the week in the NHL and showed an admirable resiliency of spirit in the wake of his horrible start, into a culprit every time the Avalanche loses is the easy way out and would be evading other issues. Truly elite goaltending, from the body of work perspective rather than wildly fluctuating judgments based on one or two games, would make the Avalanche's problems seem less glaring. But there are problems, nonetheless.

It would be nice
I’m applying a personal moratorium on goalie talk for at least the next five games
(well except the “Budaj in Chicago to hook back up with Q’s wife jokes tonight”)

Frei REALLY sucked last year. I don’t think I can ever respect him as a journalist again. Dater so far, has made only 1 mistake; Budaj.
By the way, after last night’s loss I’m all but ready to throw my towel in the ring and accept that Avs are gonna be rebuilding next year without Sakic, Foote and Foppa.
If only we had Gretzky as a coach…
26 Card Jet
why?
Why is everyone always dogging on peter budaj? Yeah he has some bad games here and there but who doesnt? No matter what goalie we get he is going to have bad games every once in a while. So give the dogging of budaj a rest. He is coming into his own and he just needs some time to adjust to being the number one goaltender. I mean look how well he did when Theodore was stinking it up two seasons ago.
That's the thing
All the dogging of Budaj on MHH is completely sarcastic, it’s the muppet squad led by Dater over at the Post that’s dogging Budaj.

Yeah, it’s mostly to mock the ‘writing’ of a certain Post reporter. I think the vast majority of MHH members supported the decision to make Boots the #1, and we support him moving forward AS the #1 this season.
I know I’VE been tagged as a ’Budaj guy", by a few people.
Colorado Avalanche: Gellin' and Propellin'!!!
Hell
If I didn’t think Jibbles or Texacogirl would fight me for it, I’d try to be the owner of Budaj’s corner.
Naw I know how to fight

My position this whole season has been:
“He hasn’t played great, but he hasn’t played that poorly. A lot of his bad stats are due to problems in the defense.”
Frankly I’m almost afraid that I’m going to be tried as a communist if I say Budaj hasn’t been awful this season.

I'd say an even more accurate assessment is
He was pretty horrible to start the season, then had a few outstanding games, and lately has been pretty mediocre but definitely not the worst of the Avs problems. And Raycroft is a nightmare waiting to happen (and that did happen against Columbus).

Yeah
That’s essentially what I have said.
D the first 3 games
A for the next 3-4
C+/B- since then.

I don’t think he was that terrible the first three games…defense was a big problem then as well.
I would probably say:
First 3: C-
Second 3: A
Third 3: B
His last three games haven/t been much worse than his second three, he’s just bee hung out to dry much more.
Now and then we had the hope that if we lived and were good, God would permit us to be PIRATES.

I agree with those grades. Boods was not good to start the season but it looked like jitters to me. I think he has settled in a bit more and I was impressed with him especially last game. The other 5 guys on the ice are giving him no support so goals are going to go in on the 3rd, 4th, or 5th rebound.
