OT: Avs Lose, Avery Sucks
And we have a mission: Find a nickname for Americanario. What does "Americanario" mean anyway? After a great first period which continued the Avalanche goal scoring streak, the second and third period were a bust. Lackluster play, bad turnovers, and great Nashville defense prevailed. The puppy dogs and sunshine are over for now. Especially if Raycroft starts in net tomorrow night.
We need a true iron fisted coach and training staff to kick the fire back into this team. Granato continued with his excuses about the team not playing a full 60 minutes. When will he realize de-nial is not a river on some other continent than the one we live on?
*Sigh*

Yup
1. Forsberg will be back with the Avs before the New Year to much ado about everything and he will kick ass as always. Or he will come whenever and retire an Av after two more seasons.
2. Honest answer – Forsberg – if he cares about playoffs and a Cup will sign somewhere else if the Avs are not sniffing the playoffs when he is ready to return. I say that and then remember we were not a lock for the playoffs last year when he signed. But seriously, this season, we really could be out by X-Mas.

Actually
I finished up Keith Moon’s biography recently, am about to knock out a biography of JFK, and during Christmas holiday will be reading about Winston Churchill and Ronald Reagan. Also, during work I’ve been watching the TV Series Lost from season 1 on. Pretty interesting so far, though a little peculiar. New Punisher comes out tomorrow, and even though I know it looks horrible, I’m going to check it out early day because it’s 5 bucks the earlier I go.

I’m not a big fan of political biography’s. I’m more into sport ones. I’ve read the Brodeur biography and a couple of Australian Wiket keepers biographies. I also read A Season of Loss, A Lifetime of Forgiveness. The Dan Snyder and Dany Heatley story, which was both really good and really sad. Plus Blood Feud which is awesome, and currently over east somewhere. Clive Cussler and Mathew reilly are the authors i’ve been reading lately. Also been watching alot of Scrubs and American dad.

but JFK and Churchill are two guys who have always been fascinating to me. I’ve read the Brodeur one as well. I don’t know how well I would react to reading the book about Heatley and Snyder and of course Blood Feud is a fantastic book. That book sparked my first ever comment on this site, actually.
by SlamDunkTheFunk on Dec 4, 2008 10:59 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
I can understand JFK and Churchill being interesting books. The Snyder Heatley one is good, it’s more about how the team coped and how the Snyders forgave Heatley and tried to rally the team. It’s a good life book in a way but it was a bit hard to read at times.

We have a very strange relationship, and I try not to actively seek too many things revolving around it. That being said, though, everyone should read a book called “Not Fade Away” that was written by Peter Barton and Lawrence Shames. Excellent story.

It’s not so much about his death, Its more about how the Synders rallied around both the Thrashers and Dany and forgave him because they knew he didn’t want it to happen and accepted him into their family. I personally believe almost everyone should read it.

With the way pro sports can inundate you with bullshit revolving around money, minor league hockey is honestly kind of refreshing. The game is slower, the players not as skilled, but the game feels much more like a game than a business. It’s very refreshing.

About the skating, I would say not to worry about your age at all. If you really want to skate, just go skate. Even if you fall down, I mean, so what? I see guys fall down every night who make a living with their skating. If you want to do, just buck up and do it. Don’t worry about anything or anyone else other than you and the ice.

Also go on a relatively packed day if you want to blend in but skating might be bit harder or go on a weeknight as theres generally less people and theres more room to skate, although you’ll probably get the good skaters there when theres less people around.

If I’m around someone I hate I just either completely ignore them or make subtle jokes about their stupidity.

That’s a natural correlation. However, I never did tell the story behind the nick. But, being from Houston, I’m sure SDTF understands the reference.

I always assumed it had to do with Texaco Oil, but i thought it was a weird thing to pick a screenname from. I’ve never had that problem, Savage is actually my last name and it’s always just seemed a perfect match for me. Everyone always comments on how its a good name for anything.

I used to work for Texaco. Oil kinda runs in the family, anyway. Hence, why my dad is bad in the oil capital of America. Anyway, I was so loyal/enthralled/happy with the company, my friends started calling me the texacogirl and it just stuck. Besides, it’s not something , many people would know about me anyway.
And cutest story ever… when my niece was three years old, she used to sing the Texaco song:
“Oh, Texaco,,, Star of the American Road…”

Too asnwer at least the first question...
Americanario is a combination of American and Canario.
I am by nationality American (USA), but my mother (though of European decent and white) is Mexican.
I spent two years of my life living in the Canary Islands (Spain) and was “adopted” by a middle age woman and her daughter. They are very much like my mother and sister. As a joke ‘Mami’ would tell people that she had had an affair with an American serviceman and after I was born she sent me to live with him in the States. People from the Canary Islands are called “Canarios” in Spanish. So I combined the two and you have Americanario.
However, on a couple of other sites I frequent they simply refer to me now as “Am” or the “Smilie Master”(that board has lots and lots of smilies and I seem to know 90% of the codes for them???). But feel free to debate other nicknames as well…
Now and then we had the hope that if we lived and were good, God would permit us to be PIRATES.

There are fair share of problems with it, no doubt, but I like it way, way more than Houston. I lived there last year for a few months, and it was just sooo much nicer than Houston. Coming back down here, though, has been a huge killer of a lot of my happiness. Stupid city.

I totally feel cheated with the two Cup wins because I was in Cape Cod, Massachussetts (sp?) when Krupp FINALLY ended game 4 of the 96 Finals and it was like 3 am and I was looooong asleep. Then, in ‘01 Tropical Storm Allison dropped in and dumped her load on the city of Houston, leading to insane, non-stop news coverage for days. As a result, Game 7 of the Cup Finals was aired on a time delay at 2am, and I already knew the result of the game before then. I’m still extremely pissed off that this piece of shit city made me lose out on Game 7 of the Cup Finals just so they could advertise more Girl Scout fundraisers for people who had been temporarily displaced by a TROPICAL STORM.

Then I saw teh Bolts beat the Flames, who I was going for. Do far the only teams I’ve gone for that have won was the Hurricane’s and the Ducks. That was befor I hated them.

Yeah, my first glove save on a slap shot was an awesome feeling, totally felt like Roy, I then proceeded to let the next 2 shots go 5-hole. that was before I figured out the correct stance and started dropping into a proper butterfly. Stupid 60 year old instuctor telling me to play stand up style.

That’s how I got my current side-gig as a goalie coach. The head coach was teaching a private lesson to a young kid during a stick-n-puck session I was at. He was teaching stand-up stuff and the kid seemed really confused so I give him a couple of pointers. After the session he asked me to come out and work with his goalie because he (the coach) didn’t know a “damn thing” about modern goaltending.

miss competitive hockey playing. My stress levels were much, much healthier when I was still playing, but now that I’m not in it anymore, I spend more time worrying about stupid shit. Things like why all Colorado teams have had horrible, horrible injury problems in the past two years.

Fuck ya
Street hockey is my bread and butter.
In college I started playing floor hockey too. 1 year as a right-winger (plus 1 game as a center), and 1 year as a Goalie/Extra Attacker. The season I played forward was actually for a good team. I only played 1 game as center, because I sucked so bad on faceoffs.
But I was a great checking line right winger. Bigger and taller than anyone else on the team. I was slow as shit and had no endurance, but I had by far the best shot on the team, and I would just mug people (as much as you can without pads). But I scored all of 4 goals all season, and in just 2 games. But all 4 came on the same night. It was a double header (technically we played in 2 leagues, a veteran league and an advanced league), and in the first game, I scored three goals, the first was on just a nice wrister, the second came on a rebound tap in in the crease, and third came from a simple dump in. In the second game, I scored the GWG off of pure reflexes. Somehow, I got paired with our #1 center, and I did nothing but charge up the court at the goal next to him, and he just passed it so hard that my stick automatically shot a perfect top-shelf wrister. From that moment, I always understood the Peter Forsberg Effect, whereby he could make anyone an elite NHLer.
I’m academic, so I don’t do this whole athletics thing much, but that was by far the highlight of my sporting life.
Mir ist egal.
