WCQ Game 6: Wild At Avalanche, Open Thread

The Avs need to put the Wild (and their fans) out of their misery tonight.  Strike quick, strike hard, and be done with them.  None of that lazy crap that dominated the first two periods of game 5, because the Wild aren't going to lose again if that's the way the Avs play.

Nothing else needs to be said.  A game 7 back in St. Paul is not an option.

If you're at the game, help bring the house down.  If you're not, help us get this thread going.

Let's go Avs!

ESPN preview.

GO AVS GO

I want a dominating victory.  and I want a Jones goal, the guy deserves it.

Cup winning team put teams like this out of their misery.  C'mon boys!

Tonights goal scorers

I'm looking for TWO from Smytty and one from Foppa.
Then Joe can take over in the second....

I just....

I just wanna win. Come on Avs, just one win! I have class on Monday, don't let it get to that, or else I'll have to miss the game (everytime I've missed class to watch a game, we lost). Go Avs!!!

RE: I just....

Don't miss lass then.

I don't care how we win or by how much. Avs just need to get it done tonight and be done with the Wild. 14 games is enough, no reason to add one more to the schedule.  We need to come out tonight with that killer instinct that we had in game 4.

Stay in School. But you better not even have to choose.

Nervous

I'm pretty nervous about the game tonight.  I'm almost ready to skip watching it and just hope for the best.

I don't think my heart can take 60 more minutes of this insanity.

by Joe Dunman on Apr 19, 2008 7:03 PM MDT reply actions

RE: Nervous

Completely agreed, I don't need another 5 yrs added onto my heart after the 20 added last game.

Avs need to score quick and often. But not as much as Game 4, Wild would definitely try to kill some guys if that happens.

by Drakenlot on Apr 19, 2008 7:36 PM MDT up reply actions

Whooo!

Go Avs!

(Can't thing of anything to say right now, except that even though I think we'll win this series, I'd love to see us close it out tonight, and do it in style.)

On the Habs

I'm watching it, Bruins score, and not 20 secs later Habs scored.

I saw that goal coming a mile away, Habs guy was wide open.

by Drakenlot on Apr 19, 2008 7:38 PM MDT reply actions

Game

Bruins scored late on a fantastic shift from Marco Strum.

This was a fantastic game (3rd period at least)

Re: Game

That was a pretty good game.  Lets hope the Av's game isn't that close.

Once again I will stay away from the T.V. and thread  for as long as I can possibly stand.  Hope the streak continues.

by Americanario on Apr 19, 2008 7:53 PM MDT up reply actions

Better not

You know, the team this series who scores 3 goals wins... so you-know-who can't let 4 in, that just asking for trouble.

by Drakenlot on Apr 19, 2008 7:55 PM MDT up reply actions

Kessel

He's simply amazing to watch. It's mind-boggling that he was benched, but I guess it was the prefect move for him.

sounds about like Wolksi, stupid to bench him but he's been on fire since.

CBC announcers

Lost, so we just get the crowd and the game for the moment.

Gotta say, it's really cool, I wish every game sounded like this

by Jibblescribbits on Apr 19, 2008 8:39 PM MDT reply actions

Joe and I

Jinxed it, that's too bad they should broadcast games without announcers

by Jibblescribbits on Apr 19, 2008 8:40 PM MDT up reply actions

Why

Does everyone at on Pierre MacGuire so much?  I don't mind the guy (at least on NBC).

by HawkEye19 on Apr 19, 2008 8:45 PM MDT up reply actions

I don't

hate him as much as others, but he's not my favorite. Him and Milbury together were pretty excruciating the other day

by Jibblescribbits on Apr 19, 2008 8:51 PM MDT up reply actions

Only thing

I don't like about him is his volume. He drowns out the crowd sometimes.

by Drakenlot on Apr 19, 2008 8:53 PM MDT up reply actions

Milbury

Should just be put in a room with highlights of his cough past greatness and never be forced on us again.

MacGuire is good at what he does, which is between benches stuff.  Any more is asking a little too much.

And speaking on NBC, can we somehow get rid of Eddie Olczyk?

by HawkEye19 on Apr 19, 2008 8:54 PM MDT up reply actions

Re: CBC announcers

Wouldn't it be awesome to have that option on Center Ice?  With announcers and without?

They could call it "Ice Audio"

by Joe Dunman on Apr 19, 2008 8:41 PM MDT up reply actions

I'd even take

It online every once in a while

by Jibblescribbits on Apr 19, 2008 8:41 PM MDT up reply actions

Yeah

and rail cams versus regular camera shots

by texacogirl on Apr 19, 2008 8:42 PM MDT up reply actions

Game Audio

They've got that option on AFL games over here, you can choose what announcers you want or whether you want to listen to the crowd. They also have multiple camera angles you can view.

by Savage33 on Apr 19, 2008 8:42 PM MDT up reply actions

by Joe Dunman on Apr 19, 2008 8:45 PM MDT up reply actions

Its only

for select games during the round but it also shows game stats and other interesting information.

by Savage33 on Apr 19, 2008 8:46 PM MDT up reply actions

Too bad

AFL isn't a big time sport.

by Drakenlot on Apr 19, 2008 8:46 PM MDT up reply actions

Re: Too bad

yeah its huge in Australia but nowhere else really, i know they're trying to get leagues started in Africa and North America.

by Savage33 on Apr 19, 2008 8:49 PM MDT up reply actions

How

Does that work? Is it online, or some sort of cable package?

by HawkEye19 on Apr 19, 2008 8:46 PM MDT up reply actions

Its on Foxtel

a cable supplier, it was originally an additional subscription on top of the foxtel package but now it's just covered by one of the sports channels.

by Savage33 on Apr 19, 2008 8:48 PM MDT up reply actions

Aussie

That's an Austrailian company right?

by Jibblescribbits on Apr 19, 2008 8:50 PM MDT up reply actions

Yeah

Its just the cable company that supplies Australia with channels like ESPN and other international stations, They show some of the VS NHL games. Australia(or atleast Western Australia where i live) only gets free to air tv which is local channels and Foxtel is the Australia wide supplier that shows non-local programs like the NHL and other sports and documentary's

by Savage33 on Apr 19, 2008 8:54 PM MDT up reply actions

Interesting

Would be interesting is the Premier League or one of the other Euro leagues would pick that up.

by HawkEye19 on Apr 19, 2008 8:56 PM MDT up reply actions

Premiership

Does this thing where they have a fan from each side as the commentators.  It's pretty cool, especially when you get a thrill of victory/agony of defeat call.

by andrew @ Mile High Hockey on Apr 19, 2008 9:00 PM MDT up reply actions

Everything has to be delayed for the FCC, even children's shows, FCC are too wound up in their panties.

by Drakenlot on Apr 19, 2008 9:08 PM MDT up reply actions

Rap music

should just be silence for the full song

by Savage33 on Apr 19, 2008 9:15 PM MDT up reply actions

I think Sky has that for the EPL

I know they have FanZone, where you can listen to fans of the two teams comment on the game instead of the announcers. It's hilarious (when I can understand them). And they also let you change camera views, they track a specific player every 15 minutes and you can watch the player cam when you want to. Those are just 2 examples, I'm sure they have a lot more features. I think it's interactive from your remote, and I'm amazed that Monday Night Football hasn't come up with something like that yet. Sports coverage has gotten pretty half-assed here.

I was in France in 1998 and vividly remember that my uncle's satellite setup had that interactive component. Cell phone technology and interactive TV sports coverage - Europe is killing us in those areas!

by Dan Winkler on Apr 19, 2008 9:03 PM MDT up reply actions

Game Audio

You know, it would be cool if we could get the players mic'd up and actually hear what they're saying to each other. Maybe the NHL can show like, "adult" themed games like that on PPV or something (you don't want kids hearing the filth that comes from players' mouthes, lol).

by Mike the Avs Fan on Apr 19, 2008 9:04 PM MDT up reply actions

Minute left

Just 1:00 left, empty net for the Wild.

VS commercials

What is upwith VS going to a random commercial while the puck is in play?  Seen it twice tonight, last time it was a Public Service Announcement?

One minute to go - GO AVS!!!!

Do we play

the winner of Dead Wings-Predators, or Stars-Ducks

by Savage33 on Apr 19, 2008 10:29 PM MDT reply actions

All depends...

the brackets reseed.

So depends on who wins. We could face Detroit, San Jose, Or the winner of the Ducks-Dallas.

by Americanario on Apr 19, 2008 10:32 PM MDT up reply actions

Re: All depends

i kept seeing that when VS showed the playoff standings but never knew what it meant, I assume it means that if the top 4 teams all lose then the Ducks become 1, Avs become 2, the Flames 3 and Predators 4. Would we then play the Flames because they're the 3rd seed.

Let's see..

Colour-commentator

The colour guys for Hockey Night in Canada have always been excellent.

Re: So I know...

His name is Bob Cole and he also does the NHL 2K games, too.

by Joe Dunman on Apr 19, 2008 10:38 PM MDT up reply actions

Not Cole

Jim Hughson was on PBP and Craig Simpson on color

by Shane @ Mile High Hockey on Apr 19, 2008 10:39 PM MDT up reply actions

The best were

Jim Hughson and Don Taylor from NHL 2002 and NHL 2003, they were hilarious. Not a big fan of the announcers in the NHL 08 game

NHL 08

Re: Not Cole

Are you sure?  It sounded like Cole's voice to me, unless I'm associating the wrong name to the wrong voice.

by Joe Dunman on Apr 19, 2008 10:42 PM MDT up reply actions

Positive

Cole called the Montreal-Boston game earlier today.  And don't forget, I'm Canadian so the CBC announcer voices are like a siren song for me ;)

by Shane @ Mile High Hockey on Apr 19, 2008 10:47 PM MDT up reply actions

Man

I feel slightly moronic, but it's cool because those games were so awesome. I might bust out the box and fire em up tonight as a celebration. The Avs rocked in those games.

by SlamDunkTheFunk on Apr 19, 2008 10:48 PM MDT up reply actions

Yeah.

I never knew the guys name, but everytime I hear him say something "101011 to X2F01" starts playing in my head over and over.

Ok

So now, who's next? The Dead Wings?

by texacogirl on Apr 19, 2008 10:33 PM MDT reply actions

Re: OK

Not sure yet.  It depends on who wins the Ducks-Stars and Wings-Preds series.

by Joe Dunman on Apr 19, 2008 10:35 PM MDT up reply actions

wELL...

I don't think the Ducks/Stars matter though. We're 6th, so we either play San Jose or Detroit. I doubt both those teams lose, which is the only way we'd play the Ducks or Stars.

by Mike the Avs Fan on Apr 19, 2008 10:37 PM MDT up reply actions

Poop

Yeah, that's what I meant.  You're right.

by Joe Dunman on Apr 19, 2008 10:38 PM MDT up reply actions

But it is possible...

wasn't it two years ago that all four quarter final series were won be the lower seed?  and Edmonton went to the Finals as the 8th seed?

by Americanario on Apr 19, 2008 10:40 PM MDT up reply actions

yes

Of course it's possible. But it's unlikely though, but it's definitely possible.

by Mike the Avs Fan on Apr 20, 2008 1:13 AM MDT up reply actions

So

If the Wings win, it's them.  If they don't, and the Sharks win, it's the Sharks.  If they don't, then it's Anaheim or Dallas.

Ignore

by andrew @ Mile High Hockey on Apr 19, 2008 10:40 PM MDT up reply actions

Well???

If Wings win, and then the Flames win; Flames would face the Wings and we would face Stars/Ducks.

If both Detroit and San Jose win we face Detroit.

If Flames and Preds win, we get the Flames.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

YEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow, how loud was the crowd in the last 5 minutes?!?!? I thought Minnesota's crowd was loud, but damn, they practically brought the house down in those last 5 mins!!! They were pretty quiet in the first 2 periods, but it's as if they were saving it all for the third! THAT WAS AWESOME!!!! BRING ON THE WINGS!!!!!!!! (maybe).

aghagh

I know the Wings are our great rival and all, but I'd rather not see them yet. Or think about them. Though I'm hungry and some wings do sound phenomenal...

by SlamDunkTheFunk on Apr 19, 2008 10:36 PM MDT up reply actions

So now that I have you all in a weakend state

Was Foote worth the 1st rounder?

The backend was so comfortable clearing the zone tonight across all three pairings.

Jones is going to break through again in the playoffs, he's a wrecking ball with hands.

by Dario on Apr 19, 2008 10:39 PM MDT reply actions

Foote

He's worth everything just for shutting down the Maid

by Drakenlot on Apr 19, 2008 10:40 PM MDT up reply actions

Foote was a wall

Foote was a wall tonight and all series long.  His experience and leadership has made a huge difference.

I was always ok with the first rounder and I wouldn't put it past Giguere to find a way to get a first-round pick in the draft.

by Shane @ Mile High Hockey on Apr 19, 2008 10:41 PM MDT up reply actions

I say yes

Assuming he's got another year of quality left in him.  And even if he's not, yes, just for right before the game ended, and all the guys on the ice started jumping up and down.

by andrew @ Mile High Hockey on Apr 19, 2008 10:41 PM MDT up reply actions

You know

I was one of the most vocal proponents against that first-rounder (seriously, I was all kinds of up in arms about. Check the trade deadline thread), and I never, ever, ever figured he would have such an impact on the defense as a whole. I expected him, individually, to provide leadership/toughness/blahblahblah all those things he's always given us, but to see the defense shape up as a unit after he (and I'm not forgetting Salei, either. Dude's been a monster) arrived was a fantastic surprise for me.

So to actually answer the question, sure I'll live with it. But was the extra pick for possibly re-signing him really worth it? I still dunno about that...

by SlamDunkTheFunk on Apr 19, 2008 10:46 PM MDT up reply actions

Absolutely!

Come on people, it's Footer! Footer wouldn't let us down! Neither would Foppa. I must say that the worst team in the whole NHL for Forsberg to play against is the Wild, Burns is a beast and he stuck on Foppa the whole series. Thankfully that opened up our secondary scoring, so even with Forsberg off the scoresheet, he helped win games. Next series, Forsberg should be better, that one move towards the end was vintage Foppa. And Foote just calmed a lot of people down on out D. He's badass. Salei can't be overlooked either, he played great.

Can you really blame them?

I refused to go to a playoff game in the first round against Minni.  I was there when they kicked us out in '03.

RE: Call it Superstition

I haven't watched any of the 4 games we won.  After missing games #1 and #4 due to track meets, and the Avs having lost the 2 games I watched, I knew I couldn't join in on game threads nor could I watch the games.  It sucks, but as long as the Avs win...Right?

RE: Superstition

Yeah, I heat ya.  Although, I have never felt that I am really important enough to swing a playoff series.  Who the F am I?

It was for my own protection that I refused to attend these games.  Nothing more.

Eh, it's okay.  I think most everybody was busy watching instead of typing, and that's certainly not a bad thing.

The first game of the second round should be pretty epic, as far as threads go.

At any rate, over 200 comments isn't bad at all.

I Just Have to Say

"I am glad to be rid of daily readings of "Russo's Rants"', the idiocy of the Mild fans ripping on Lappy for no reason, and, most of all, Dater calling the Mild to win this series. NW division champs, bupkis.

I love "yogurt"

I just have to point one thing out.

In the last 5 minutes of this game, the Pepsi center was louder than the Xcel Energy center ever got. At least that's what it seemed like. Of course, it was pretty damn quiet the 1st two periods, I was embarassed to see Avs fans that quiet and I was yelling at the TV to try to make them yell too lol. However, the third period was the loudest in years and no one sat down and everyone was cheering for the last 5 minutes of that game and that was just awesome, I haven't seened the Can that loud in a really, reeeeally long time. Sweet, just sweet.

by Mike the Avs Fan on Apr 20, 2008 1:21 AM MDT reply actions

your still up?

I read that same statement on various boards tonight.  That the can was rocking in the last 5 minutes, even more so when Sakic single handedly kept the puck in the Wild zone for 30 seconds with less than 3 minutes to go.
