Glow Puck

Versus seem to want the glow puck back, or "Puck Tracking" as they call it. Having never seen the glow puck in action i have no real opinion of it, I did always use the glow puck option in NHL games though, but it seems almost everyone is against it. Will this help VS and the NHL get more casual fans or drive even more people away.

Glow Puck

It's not actually the "glow puck" that appeared on Fox years back.  Then the puck was actually highlighted during play, whereas the Versus incarnation is reported to be used mostly for replays to highlight the route the puck took to the net.

The Fox "highlight" puck was god awful.

I'm not sure why they would even want to use it for replays.  In slow motion we can see the puck, that's never a problem.  The glow puck is an idea best left buried.

Weirdest things about the glow puck

One thing I will say about Fox is at least they were trying to grow the game back in the mid-90's.  And, largely thanks to exciting teams like the Avs and the Av-RW rivalry, plus some pretty good marketing (hello, buttman, is thing on?) they were somewhat successful.  Some folks even thought the NHL might catch and surpass the NBA at the time.

Having said that, being someone who knows the game well enough to follow the puck, even on TV, without it, I didn't like it.  The two really weird things about it were:

  1. When the puck was along the near boards, the blue glow showed up in the stands, which was just strange.
  1. On a slapper, the glow turned red and left a tail like a comet.
