Granato to be named head coach

Per Altitude employee at hfboards.

My initial reaction is...why?  Granato had one job the last few years, as far as I know -- the Power Play.  Which was certifiably awful last year at 29th in the league.  So lets promote him!

I'm usually an optimist about this kind of thing around here, but this is an awful move.  He was terrible his first time around, he was terrible last year in his role as PP coach...why would this be any different?

Edit -- Official Link

And I'm still in shock.  What an awful move.

I can't believe

We didn’t even wait to talk to Todd McLellan.

Mir ist egal.

Fuck.

Seriously Granato’s a better choice than McLellan, Dineen or Burns? really?

Ruined

This has ruined my entire day. I mentioned this on my quick throw together blog post, but I’m not joking. The lyrics to the song I was listening to when I saw this was:

in a ball of fire
in a ball of fire
in a ball of fire
in a ball of fire
in a ball of fire
in a ball of fire

(“In the Beginning”by The Stills)

IT seems strangely ominous

I’ll need time to digest this. My gut reaction is to hate this.

I’ve got to research my old thoughts on him as coach. I remember the offense being way more rush oriented and progressive from the back end. I don’t remember the PP being so damn horrid when he was head coach. I remember that he was better with the young guys than Hartley was. The only negative thing I remember is that he had no experience and his playoff record wasn’t very good. He did keep the NW division title streak alive I think?

by Dario on May 22, 2008 10:38 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

all this is true, but he also had one of the most stacked teams EVER and failed. Sakic, Forsberg, Kariya, Selanne, Hejduk, Tanguay as your top 6? Blake and Foote in their primes on the back end, with a young JML and Derek Morris?

If I reach deep for optimism, I can find some things to try and hope for: maybe he is actually ready after the additional seasoning. Maybe the PP woes were Q’s fault—it did looks much different this year stylistically. And this we know for sure, they’ll play more uptempo, which is what we’ve all been screaming for.

But I doubt it.

I can't digest this!

He took a team still loaded before the cap, a team that had gone at least to game 7 of the WCF every year for the previous 4 under Hartley and won one cup, and:

1. Lost in the first round to the Wild, with fricken Patrick Roy in net.
2. Lost in the second round the following year to San Jose.

Of course he had a great regular season record. Again, the team was loaded! I am in shock. If we ever wanted proof that FG is PL’s puppet, here it is. This move has been in the back of PL’s mind since he decided to keep Tony around as an assistant coach. And yes, it is just another example of his arrogance and never wanting to admit that he makes mistakes. So he is making this major one, again!

HFS, this is horrible. Crap. He couldn’t win in the playoffs with a loaded roster. He helped to lead one of the worst PPs in the history of hockey last season. Now he is our head coach again? WTF? WTF?

And another thing

why isn’t the number of comments on this thread updating on the main page?

I think you have to refresh for that

I was refreshing

for a while, things just weren’t updating. Seems to be working again now.

I just can’t believe this. I can remember how majorly disappointed I was after the playoffs in both 2003 and 2004. Thinking how completely inept Granato was as a head coach. He drove a Ferrari into a brick wall twice. What is he going to do now that we only have an aging Ford Focus?

Strange

Mine aren’t updating now either

And yet another

have you seen all of the kittens running for cover today? Think of the kittens, FG, please for the love of Roy, think of the kittens.

Poor Kittens

I feel terrible about pre-emptively celebrating their safety.

What a strange, strange move. If this happened in Toronto (an old coach returning) the media would burn down the ACC and Pat Burns (the most likely to do it) was pretty successful.

Yep, I lay this squarly at your feet. No soup for you!

How will I ever make this up to the kittens?

by PPP on May 23, 2008 9:53 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t think that’s possible. You are to kittens as Attila the Hun was to his neighbors, a scourge.

So...

Who’s going to replace Granato as Assistant Coach? I think Kono might be a good fit internally, and maybe there’s someone out there externally that might be a good fit in the minor leagues.

But we all know what’s coming: Eric Lacroix.

by thedoctor on May 22, 2008 11:46 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Money

IF there are odds, I’d throw $20 on Roy
