Damien Cox Snubs Roy
The Toronto Star's Damien Cox makes a list of the top 5 goaltenders of the past 25 years and I assume that where St. Patrick winds up will surprise.

Wow
This reminds me of Ronald Reagan—-how he magically became one of the best presidents ever after he finally died. Hasek, it seems, has become the second best goalie of all time now that he’s retired.
And Brodeur is somehow the best and he hasn’t retired yet.
Roy: More wins, more Cups, more dominance, and despite his tendencies, less crazy than the Lowest Common Dominator. What, because the guy doesn’t have three gold medals from some silly Olympic or World Championship sideshow he’s not the best goalie ever?
Good god.
Go Avs! Let's get some goals!
Also, if international play is so damned important, why the hell is Vladislav Tretiak not on that list? Or on ESPN’s list?
My head hurts.

I agree that Dryden should be on ESPN’s list. But did Tretiak ever play in the NHL, or just coach? He should definitely be on a list of the best “goalies” of all time, but I think the ESPN list is the best NHL goalies of all time.
Don’t mean to play devil’s advocate, just trying to figure out both of these lists…
I’m talking about Damien Cox’s list, not the ESPN one. Cox cited international play as a major reason why Roy wasn’t the top dog.

IMO
international games are the same as All Star games for a goalie, you’re behind the best possible defense they can get. Also wasn’t Roy asked to be Canada’s goalie by Gretzky but turned it down to spend time with his kids thus enabling Broduer to start.
Reagan
That’s a good correlation. I guess 20 years from now we’ll see teams falling all over themselves to claim that they have the closest goalie to matching Hasek’s legacy.
Don’t you guys remember the time when Brodeur … or was it Hasek ….. won 10 playoff OT games in a row during one SC playoff season to lift his team to the cup? Or how about that 3 OT shutout in another cup clincher? Or the fact that each of them has 3 Conn Smythes? And far and away more playoff victories than any goalie in NHL history?
Putting Brodeur and Hasek ahead of Roy is a joke. Brodeur is building quite a legacy, but he’s not quite Roy. Hasek is more hype than substance …. always has been. Hasek doesn’t even belong on that list.

And seriously, there’s a whole blog dedicated to knocking down Brodeur, which, quite ironically, also thinks Hasek is the best ever.
When did Roy ever play behind a trap that boasted Niedermayer, Rafalski and Stevens?
