NHL Draft: Day Two
So the Avs did a little dealing to get an extra pick. Brad Richardson got sent to the Kings for the 61st choice. The Kings originally got that pick (the last of the second round) from Detroit, so if goalie Peter Delmas turns out to be the next Patrick Roy, we can say that it was at the expense of the Red Wings.
And let's hope the Kings treat Richie better than the Avs did. He deserves to be playing in the big league.
The Avs' draft choices:
2nd Round, 50th: Cameron Gaunce, D, Mississauga (OHL)
2nd Round, 61st: Peter Delmas, G, Lewiston (QMJHL)
4th Round, 110th: Kelsey Tessier, C, Quebec (QMJHL)
5th Round, 140th: Mark Olver, C, Northern Michigan (CCHA)
6th Round, 167th: Joel Chouinard, D, Victoriaville (QMJHL)
6th Round, 170th: Jonas Holos, D, Sarpsborg (Norway)
7th Round, 200th: Nathan Condon, C, Wausau (USHS)
The Avs have traditionally picked heavily from the collegiate ranks, but this year they only chose one player from the CCHA. Also of note, the choice of only centers and defensemen (with the exception of Delmas).
For more info on all the players, be sure to check out Avs Prospects. Jori will be adding more info throughout the day.

Richardson
I want the first reply of this post to state how much I will miss him.
I really felt he had a great set of hands and a shot that could stack up with the best of the league (okay, maybe not Sakic’s shot, but hey, you gotta draw a line between “best of the league” and “godlike” somewhere)
I think the Avs did not gave him a fair shot to develop into a regular, like they did with the Cody’s and also are doing with Jones.
I will miss him and have a feeling this move will burn us.

Early Thoughts
I’ve just about finished the mini bios and I’ll have a more detailed analysis up in a few days, but overall this has a feeling of the Avs 2003 draft. They seemed to reach more then the have the last three drafts.
Just to clarify one thing, Condon is a future college player. He’ll be in the USHL next year with Fargo and join Minnesota in the fall of 2009. The Avs love those Gophers.
I’m not a big fan of the Gaunce pick. I like the Tessier and Condon picks and I’m intrigued by Olver.
Regarding Richardson, the Avs got fair value for him, but he was the wrong guy to trade. The fact that Tyler Arnason has a regular spot on this team and Brad does not upsets me. He was misused by this organization and I’m glad he’ll get an opportunity to blossom with another team.

Hossa
In unrelated news, can I point out how Pittsburgh fans are livid with the fact Hossa is trying Free Agency and they’ve dubbed him Ho$$a ???
It’s fingerlicking sweet!

I was going to point out
that Hossa’s a free agent now. The funny thing is over at fanhouse they have a story earlier about how he’s not going to play in the KHL and wants to stay in Pittsburgh
“He’s not interested in (playing in Russia),” Barry said. ” He wants to stay in Pittsburgh. He wants them to keep, hopefully, as many of these players together (as possible) and he wants to try to make a run next year.”
Then he goes and says he wants to try free-agency, doesn’t sound like someone who wants to stay in Pittsburgh.

It sounds like somebody who doesn’t care where he ends up, as long as the money is right. I don’t blame him one bit. That’s the business.

In this case, I agree. I mean, it’s not like he has strong ties to Pittsburgh or anything…

He was a rental from the start. The fact that he played really well in the playoffs doesn’t make him a slave to the organization. I think Penguins fans should be more worried about what’s going to happen to Malkin.

I don't really blame him
I just find it funny his agent said he wants to stay in Pitt and make a run for the cup with the same team and then turns around and says he’s going to try free agency.

Sounds like an agent to me.

The weird thing is that he’s also saying he’s not going for the money, but he just wants to see his name on the Stanley Cup.
Hello, Penguins anyone????
I think if Ho$$a signs a 2 year 3 M/year deal with the Penguins he WILL get that Stanley cup ring and become the HoF’er he wants to be.

I’ve never understood the whole “it’s not about the money” comments then holding out for a bigger deal. I fail to see how after you’re first $10 or so million they still need more money to play.

Yeah, I’m with you. I know I’m low on the economic totem pole, but really, is there that big a difference between $9 million a year and $8 million, in the grand scheme of things?
