Domo Arigato, Mr. Svatos

According to Adrian Dater at the Denver Post, Marek Svatos has decided to skip arbitration (which he petitioned for) and has now signed a new contract with the Avalanche.

The terms are 2 years, $4.1 million (about what we all expected), with the first year paying him $1.75 million and the second year paying him the difference.

I think, considering his high goal output, improved defensive performance, but also his one-trick-pony offensive abilities and his high injury rate, that the contract is pretty fair.  He's still young, and still a restricted free agent, and still has something to prove.

I'd like to see him become a latter-day Milan Hejduk this season, as The Duke begins to wind down his career.

not bummed, not thrilled either. money is fair. He’s one of the guys that will really need to step up this year especially if Joey retires.

If he keeps producing and If he stays healthy, big IF, this could be a small steal.

well of course. but he hasn’t in 4 years, so I don’t expect him to now.

i DO expect him to improve his passing. I wonder if he’ll play more with Stastny this year, i’ve wondered what he might do there with Smyth and him.

At the end of these 2 new contract years, will Svatos be a RFA or an UFA?
I like Svats, and if he can stay healthy this season, this signing could turn out to be a bargain.

If Wolski is taking up the 2nd Line C position, which has been whispered, maybe Svatos can up his production! Maybe put a veteran like Bruno Tucker on the other side, and you might have a versatile line, even though Svats and Tucker are both one-trick ponies.

Speaking of Tucker, what was his Maple Leafs Nickname?

UFA for Svatos when this contract ends, I believe

Svatos did have pretty good success this season with Wolski, it’s just too bad that they had to play with “I can’t hit the net” Arnason.
I would expect big things if the two play together again.

Svatos

I think this is terrific. Fair price, right age and he really stepped up his defensive play last year. I think we could see Hejduk on the 3rd line this year unless he has Forsberg to set him up again.

Svats

RDS had reported this earlier:

“Marek Svatos et l’Avalanche du Colorado ont évité l’arbitrage.
L’attaquant a accepté un contrat de deux ans.
Âgé de 26 ans, Svatos a compté 26 buts en 62 rencontres l’an dernier.
Il avait été un choix de septième ronde (227e) de l’Avalanche lors du repêchage de 2001.”

Personally, I want to hold on to him, because he’s one of the few late rounders we have that has really has blossomed into a deadly goal scorer, and I’d hate to see some other team realize his potential with some assists and consistency. I just look at the success the Wings have with late round Europeans, and other than Svatos, 7th round, 227 overall, I can’t think of any other successful late round Europeans in our system.

Yeah, the Avs’ current prospects are pretty heavy on the Canadians and Americans. Oh, and I can’t read French, so I have no idea what that quote says.

Go Avs! Let's get some goals!

Oh, it’s pretty basic, it says:

“Marek Svatos and the Colorado Avalanche have avoided arbitration.
The forward has accepted a contract for two years.
At age 26, Svatos totaled 26 goals in 62 games last year.
He was a seventh round choice (227 overall) by the Avalanche in 2001.”

That’s what I THOUGHT it said…

Basic or not, it’s still French.

“No, silly, we’re Americans, this is GAME!”

I kind of had to fudge the “lors du repechage”, I didn’t know off the top of my head what the direct translation of that is, so if anyone can speak/read French, I would really like to know exactly what it means.

Also, I guess it should really read: “Svatos, age 26, totaled/tallied 26 goals in 62 games/appearances last year.” The way I wrote it before implied Svatos was 26 last year, during his 26 goal campaign, and 27 this year, making him one year older than he actually is.

“lors du repechage” loosely translated means “at the redo/resit”

I'm Happy

but feeling somewhat cautious about Svatos. I am not expecting too much from him this year as he tore his ACL. From all accounts shared by other posters/bloggers, this is not an easy injury to recover from. So, I wonder just how productive he will be. I’m hoping for the best.

Don't Go, Joe!

The amount his fair considering his production and his injuries. Think about what he could do if he plays a full season.
I would love to see him and Wolski together again, but I think some of that may depend of whether or not Joe returns.

Been sitting on that headline long?

I’ve been looking at the Media Guide & he’s been hurt a LOT. I’d feel better is he had fewer injury-riddled seasons in his career.

I’ve been using that headline as a one-liner repeatedly since his rookie season. It makes me feel clever.
