Sakic will return!
[Americanario gets the honors of announcing the news! More to come. -Joe]
It has been announced that Sakic will be back for another season. He has signed for 1yr and will be paid $6 million (roughly $750,000 less than 07-08).
Good to have you back Joe.
So now we'll really wonder what that press conference tomorrow is all about?

Does that
improve the Avs chacne to make the playoffs? I am concerned about this team, especially between the pipes. I love having Joey back for another season. But. . . .

The goalie is not the issue. And now, the offense is less of an issue—-we hope.

there ya go, you guys got your legend back for another year….Hope Sakic can be trusted to play that one year and retire, and not pull a Favre with multiple years of will he/won’t he head fakes
by ahtrap on Aug 27, 2008 3:55 PM MDT reply actions 0 recs
There were no head fakes
He did exactly as he said. He took his time to decide if he wanted to retire or not. The Favre situation – and Selanne and Niedermyer for that matter – were different ball games.

previous couple of years, Favre pretty much held the Packers….hostage is a harsh word, but it fits…by waiting for months before declaring he was coming back to play. Sakic “only” took three months, so it wasn’t nearly as bad as Favre’s indecision, but then again, the NFL has a far longer off-season.
I’m not knocking Sakic here, trust me. I figure every legend gets to take his time and figure out whether he really wants/needs to come back and play again, at least once. But Favre did it twice, before finally retiring, and then he tried to force the Packers to take him back after that.
Just saying that this is Joe’s one freebie….and I think we can trust him to hang them up when the time comes rather than put you guys through the wringer again…and again….and again…..

football different
Not knowing about your QB in football is a little different than not knowing about a hockey player, however central to the team.
by bushwah on Aug 27, 2008 4:39 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, though a first line center is important, it’s not the same as losing a star quarterback and having to rely on a crappy backup. Hockey offense is less centralized.

Sakic has so much respect built up, he can pull this 10 years in a row and still be loved by all Avs fans.
Sakic is probably the most sincere NHL player EVER

interesting note: no mention of whether this is his final season or not. I would guess it is, but what if he still 0wns this year? would he come back for the olympics?
by thedoctor on Aug 27, 2008 4:31 PM MDT reply actions 0 recs
My guess is that he’s just doing the same “one year at a time thing” he has done for the last few. He will not go on any sort of “farewell tour” with fans knowing he will retire. That just isn’t his style. If he has a good year, and stays more healthy than last season, who is to say he couldn’t give us one more and compete in the Vancouver Olympics?

Yeah, if he puts up 100 points and feels like a million bucks, who’s to say he doesn’t play until he’s 45? It’s all a matter of his conditioning and his attitude. He’s still got it, at least for now.

"Ultimately it came down to the fact that I still enjoy playing and competing," said Sakic. "I’m comfortable with my conditioning and my overall health. I’m ready for the start of camp and am looking forward to the upcoming season."
I seems like the injury was really a factor in determining his decision. If he plays well this year and has relatively no issues that keep him from performing well, I bet he is quick to re-sign next season. If he has another long term injury, or doesn’t play up to his standard, then he retires.
Now and then we had the hope that if we lived and were good, God would permit us to be PIRATES.

it does appear that way. there’s no doubt he didn’t have near as much speed even compared to just a year earlier, and his wrister had no pop. Could be his groin and legs weren’t ever healthy last year.
by thedoctor on Aug 27, 2008 7:31 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think the injuries this season also got him thinking, so not getting hurt this season will improve his chances of returning (I speculate)

How is this thread only 17 comments long? I know it’s the offseason but damn, this thread should be epic considering the good news.

Think
I think we all really thought Joe would be back. I don’t think anyone would think that he would wait this long to retire, so i think everyone’s just letting out a deep breath of relief, but it’s not a gigantic surprise or anything.

Pretty much
Yeah, that’s pretty much it for me. We just hired a new guy who’s an Avalanche fan and when I told him the news, he said “Woot!” and that was it. Done, back to work.
Oh, and I didn’t even have to pull any strings to get the guy hired. Turns out, the vast majority of Avalanche fans are simply awesome.

Next Summer
I think Joe might retire though. Law school may be too much and take too much out of him…
Wait, wrong Joe. that Joe would totally milk his decision and try to get a buyout like Favre did.

Salary Cap
This does bring us to a little less than 2M under the Cap roof (I hope I am wrong here). I doubt we’re gonna be pursuing Foppa now, or are we gonna take the gamble if he stays healthy and move Clark and/or Salei around to free up space for him? Other high contracts have no-trade clauses.

by Tommelot on Aug 28, 2008 1:46 AM MDT reply actions 0 recs
after some research, instead of looking at my original source, I found that we still have 5,180 M in cap space left. Probably some mistake with the cap-hit and the actual salary.
I’m sure Foppa and Sundin don’t mind sharing 5M to wear a unipron

but I never responded to your response to a comment of mine a while back, and I wanted to say…

good, I despise good Charlotte with a passion bordering on my hatred of the Wings. There’s no good “new” punk rock any more. The bands from the 80’s like Bad Religion and Pennywise(Although they’re late 80’s early 90’s) are still the best IMO.

Excuse me? What about the Exploding Hearts? They’re in my top 10 punk bands (although they might be considered poppy in comparison to Bad Religion).
I am NOT a fan of Pennywise, they always remind me of shitty bands like Good Charlotte. Even before GC existed

Can’t say I’ve ever heard the exploding hearts so i won’t judge them.
I find it impossible to compare Pennywise to shit charlotte because Pennywise don’t cry and whine how no-one loves them and how their life sucks. Their earlier stuff (unknown road, about time) with Jason Thirsk as the lyricist was some of the best punk rock IMO as it was mostly about being a better person and not conforming to what everyone else is doing. After his suicide they went a more political approach and while still good they weren’t as good as when they started IMO.

Bad Religion was actually from the early 1980s. I think they just put out their 200th record.

My bad
I meant Bad religion were from the early 80’s but Pennywise were from the late 80’s.
I’ve got quite a few Bad Religion albums and plan on getting them all.
