Your Black Monday Open Thread
Lots going on today in the real world. My city got demolished by high winds, Texas is under water, and the stock market is going to crash after Lehman Brothers and Merrill Lynch fell apart over the weekend. Oh, and I'm way behind on my readings for classes since my power went out yesterday. So instead of new posts, this thread will have to suffice.
Go crazy.

Crazy.
I’m in the suburbs of Chicago – and we’ve got rivers cresting – loads of road closures. It was a hell of a lot of fun getting in to work today.
I mean, think about it – the Cubs have a no hitter by Big Z – a hurricane smacks my parents down in Houston, the stock market will soon crash…
I cannot wait for the distraction that is hockey season to start up.
sounds like
somebody’s got a case of the Mondays

Now that is f’ing hilarious. Best OS ref I’ve ever seen, especially with the timing. And you don’t know how many times I’ve played the “I wouldn’t say I’ve been missing it” card.

yep, I use the missing it joke all the time. I am not very original. I STILL use Letterman’s “space-age polymers” line, and, based on the blank stares I always get, I imagine it’s been 10+ years since he’s used that.

Letterman’s still on? I thought they were just playing re-runs of all his bad jokes.

weather
I had no idea that Kentucky had bad weather this weekend. We had one rainy/windy day on Saturday, but yesterday was gorgeous. Here’s hoping everybody’s ok!
weather
I can really relate to the weather problems. It dipped down into the low 60s overnight this weekend, and I even had to wear a light fleece to walk my dog in the morning this weekend. I think I even saw some a couple clouds here in San Jose.
Hopefully that front clears and all will be back to normal soon.

It’s weird because it hardly rained at all. Just high winds all day that took out pretty much every tree and power line in the city. 300,000 without power yesterday, and no telling when it will get turned back on for some of us. The power lines that connect to my condo complex were completely taken out by two falling trees.

Maybe it’s just me, but wouldn’t it be smarter to put power lines under ground in those areas that are constantly effected by weather (IE. hurricanes, tornados, etc.)? Most phone lines and fiber-optics are underground, why not put the power lines there as well.

I was doing that same thought exercise in my head yesterday.
We live in an older part of the city, so all the power lines are above ground and have been for as long as there have been power lines. Over 100 years now, I assume.
So the questions are: how often are those above-ground lines damaged and how much does their repair cost? Does burying them prevent most causes of damage? If so, does the cost of periodically repairing them above-ground cost more than the one-time cost of burying them? If not, then what the hell are they waiting for?
We have to assume that the loss of service to residents (and therefore loss of payment) is part of the cost of repair in addition to the salaries of the repair crews and the materials necessary for the repairs.
Considering that no effort is underway to bury them, I assume the cost-benefit analysis didn’t find in favor of putting above-ground cables underground.

Excellent
I ended up in a drunken stupor until 7AM with work Monday (deceiving because I work at 11PM lolllll), and it hasn’t worn off quite yet and I’m online posting on various websites. Excellent, isn’t it?
The Hurricane Ike Phenomenon has successfully swept up this beaten city I live in (Houston), and no matter what I do, I cannot POSSIBLY ESCAPE it. I’m curious about something. If you were living here, and you knew plenty of people whose places got jobbed over by the storm, and you just wanted to relax and enjoy a nice Sunday, would you want to turn on the TV and be completely inundated with 24 hour Hurricane Ike coverage? I mean, am I the only who thinks that after a while it’s just TOO MUCH?? Can we please stop wallowing in the wreckage and get back to living our lives? I have a running bet that while none of the sports (or any other programs) were on the local stations over the weekend, I bet they go off the air for Oprah today. I’m legitimately excited to see how this plays out.
I have lots to say. I should go back to sleep and nurse my soon-to-be hangover. * sighs *
Well, at least you’re in a city that was actually directly impacted by the storm. Those poor jerks in Boise, Idaho probably have to watch a ton of Ike coverage and it doesn’t apply to them at all.

Hahahahah
Too true.
Oprah totally was on today, by the way.
