Full Disclosure
I was doing some research for the upcoming Avs roundtable and I came across this from a commenter back on the season preview post (the Avs roundtable one). It's funny how much can change in just one short season.
If Q fails here, Granato doesn't have a chance, they'll look outside the organization for the next coach I think.
What idiot* said that?

No one knows how the TG signing will unfold. The fact that, last year, he was responsible for the powerplay, isn’t a good omen.
But I’m SURE he learned from Q’s (many) mistakes and won’t repeat them. Otherwise we need to ‘tar-and-feather’ the guy

I'm willing
to give TG the benefit of the doubt, yes he coached the kitten killing squad to its best(and hopefully only) year ever but it’s hard to have a successful PP unit when it the lines get changed every shift

It wasn’t the line-swapping that killed the PP in my opinion, it was the coaching philosophy. They seemed to run the PP the same way they ran the regular even strength offense: 3 forwards down low, and the d-men at the points. The problem with both the regular offense and the PP for long stretches was that the puck never went back to the point. There were entire shifts where Liles & Co. could have left their sticks on the bench cuz they never got to use them! Well, when everybody in the Western Conference was running a tight 4-man collapsible box as a PK defense, you’ve just given the PK the man advantage by essentially only using 3 of your PP guys. I never saw that philosophy waver and they made it worse when the put wingers on the point, like Sakic or Wolski. Now you’re giving the man advantage back to the PK AND taking some of your best scoring talent out of the equation. We’ll quickly find out if that was a edict from Joey Q. or if that was Tony “The Avs should hire his sister instead” Granato.
Yeah, they did. I never understood why they didn’t use the more common diamond setup, as seen on the current Stanley cup winners.

So what happen last year, that didn’t the previous two? Granato would have been running that PP the previous two season as well, and it was one of the best in the league. What happened last season?
Still makes me wonder how much control Granato had and how much of the problem was Q manipulation.

Also worth asking: was it a bad system for the personnel involved? Not saying that the personnel was bad, but that the system that worked well with other players didn’t work so well with the Avs lineup last season. It could be that Q tried to stay with what worked before despite losing a big blue line cannon and a healthy Sakic.
Go Avs! Let's get some goals!
Absolutly
I think this was a gigantic problem. They kept putting Sakic on the point, which is okay, but then with 3 forwards deep there wasn’t anyone to get him the puck. Sakic on the point works only when guys are passing around opening up space for him to get into and shoot that wrist shot. The 3 forwards low is a strategy best suited for when there’s a big shot at the point. (Notice Q had Pronger and MacInnis in his stint in St. Louis so this strategy could have worked then). (Also notice the powerplay looked better last season with Salei on the point.)
With Sakic and Liles, and Stastny, Smyth and Hejduk playing it’s better to try and pass the puck around, opening any of them for a shot and having Smyth looking for rebounds.

Doesn’t “coaching the PP unit” imply you also have some form of control over the PP lines? If not, I will also give him the benefit of the doubt.
Right until he starts to go apeshit on our asses by, let’s say, rotate goalies like crazy or play Smyth behind the net.

I saw his “coaching the PP unit” more as a supervisor for a construction company, You’re in charge but you still have the higher ups who you have to answr to and have the ultimate control in the company.

I know that this post has nothing to do with it, but your title has me singing the chorus of a great Fugazi song in my head right now.

Also worth noting, in the interest of full disclosure, is that I was in the crowd in the video linked above.
Go Avs! Let's get some goals!

That's OK
I sent this in an email to my season ticket group after the Avs were bounced from the playoffs by the hated wheel:
The return of Q is also a question mark. I say having one of the worst PPs in the league, and the worst 5-on-3 PP in the history of hockey, along with going 0-8 against the wheel, are enough for me to say adios. To the entire coaching staff. Please, for the love of Roy, don’t go promoting Granato again.
