Let Me Float This Out There
I have a working theory on the coaching 'decision' made in the offseason. You know the one I'm referring to: the promotion of Tony Granato back to the head coaching position.
He's just a place-holder for Patrick Roy.
There, I said it. I really am starting to believe that Tony G. is just keeping the seat warm. He'll flesh out some of our talent, he'll do what management wants when it comes to personnel, and he'll be a genuinely good guy for the players to play for. He won't throw management or any of his players under a bus to create controversy and he won't rush to decisions, in short, he'll maintain the status quo. But in the end, he's just a bridge until the Colorado Avalanche organization can bring back their version of Coach Gretzky. I am having trouble watching the product on the ice this season and reaching any other conclusion when it comes to reasons why he was given the job.
Thoughts?

Hey
I’ve commented about that theory too. The longer Granato seems to (A) not be doing anything and (B) keeping his job, is making me a believer in the theory. I’m still undecided on wither hiring Roy as coach would be a good idea or not but I think Avs management is planning on bringing him in some day.
No thanks
I loved Patrick Roy the player, but I’m not at all convinced Patrick Roy has the ability (or the maturity) to be a good NHL coach.
It would be great having him around again, but so long as the Avalanche are stuck with middle of the pack talent (which is as far down the road as I can see), I would much prefer to have a proven coach in there.

Only “kinda”?
I think coaching this bunch of lazy slackers would drive him to talk to more inanimate things than just the goalposts
I blame it all on my goalie
Patrick Roy coaching this Avalanche team would probably result in an Assault and Battery charge, filed most likely by Tyler Arnason. Sure that sounds nice at first, but doesn’t anybody want to see #33 in the slammer?

Its not like
He’s never had issues with the cops before. If it runs the d-hole out of town, maybe it’d be worth it. (Assuming FG is as dumb as we all think he is and re-signs him)
I blame it all on my goalie
Well somthing is going on
My working theory is that Francois Giguere has been dead for a number of months and no one has either noticed or the zamboni driver is parading him around a la ‘weekend at bernie’s’.

LOFL. That brightened my cranky day. Sadly, it would explain his moves during the offseason. A monkey (insert Kris Draper joke here) with a dart board could have made better moves in the offseason.

I saw on Dater’s blog that I’m not the only one who would like to see biological weapons used on ticketmaster. +1

Mike, your theory:
It’s at least a glimmer of hope that the Avalanche have some “master plan” at works here. Hell, I’ll take any plan at this point. X’s and O’s on a napkin would be a start. Still, not a single move by the ownership, GM, or coach has even HINTED this might be the case.

I wouldn’t expect them to ‘hint’ at this, but rather use it as some huge “look we’re serious now” PR campaign in a couple of years. Sports franchises tend to get really bad right before they get really good. Perhaps we’re in the Dollar Bill Wirtz era with a Rocky on the horizon.
Also, point of fact: I NEVER said this was a good idea.
Colorado Avalanche: Gellin' and Propellin'!!!
agreed
this franchise’s decision making seems to be led by marketing, we’d be seeing billboards and such. I think that the brain trust of the team is just too cozy, they picked Granato because they knew him and felt comfortable around him. Anyone remember when Lacroix used to be an ass kicker? That’s what this team need, a Nolan type—either as coach or gm——but that would rock the boat. And as we’ve seen many times before stagnation leads to mediocrity and will eventually lead to laughingstock status unless something is done.

he’s the team president, in fact he’s MIA

actually, he IS MIA
i have season tix, and he owns the two seats next to mine, or at least did for the last few seasons. he was around last season about half the time, and spent the rest of the time in some press box. apparently this year he doesnt come out to watch the games at all. the guy that runs the club level told me hes only been around to watch a handful of games all season.
its weird, because we sat next to him every single game for two seasons, and he watched. like a hawk. sat there with his pad and made notes on everything. never smiled, never looked upset, just studied his players and the way they played the game. now he doesnt even show up most of the time. i dunno. i feel like theres just apathy creeping into the whole system. like they are waiting for the next step, but no one knows what it is.
