Because You Asked: Why is Wolski nicknamed "Baron von Wolski"?
- We didn't have anybody with "Baron" in their name/nickname.
- We had a 'royalty' theme started with The Duke.
- Other announcers are constantly screwing up the 'v' and 'w' sounds in his given name.
- It rolls off the tongue.
- I'm awesome, that's why.

Lol
Thanks. Now we need an Earl, a Marquess, a Viscount, and a Maiden (Arnason).

How about Shogun?
And I’ve always been partial to Warlord. Though not technically a royal term, there is certain amount of power in it.

Warlord is a bad azz comic book character. Nobody on the current Avs roster could carry his loincloth.

I even have a couple issues. I was more a marvel man myself though so I don’t have too many DC comics.

I found a book at barnes & noble
recently that totally blew me away. It was a complete history of the Marvel comics. Fifty bucks, and it was HUGE. I almost bought it.

I need to point out the possible cultural conflict arising from using a German indicator of nobility for a Polish-born person. What with the whole Poland being subjugated by Germany for nearly 300 years thing…

Actually
If you click on this above nobility link I linked to above (aw what the hell, here too) the Term “Baron” was used across the continent and across languages. The only language mentioned in there that didn’t use the term was Russian, which used Tiarna.Polish isn’t mentioned there.
I can’t find anything on the Polish having a “baron” class of nobility, but I don’t thuink it matters much because we call him Baron von Wolski, and “von” is normally Dutch. So I think we’ve establish a nice eclectic blend of nationalities in the nickname already.

Seriously, looking back at the nickname now that Jibbles has packed his big, dignity blue brain away, I don’t think we could have done a better job of Euro-ing up a nickname for Wolski. Kinda funny when you remember how long he’s been in North America and how well he speeka de english.

Genau

So basically...
Germany and the Netherlands have a connected history, but Poland and Eastern Europe are very different. The Germans were a military power, whereas the Netherlands power lied within its economic strength. Through a process known as “deutschifizierung”, the Germans attempted to annihilate the Polish and their identity. No idea wtf it says at the end, except maybe something about languages clashing? I dunno.
What the hell is deutschifizierung?

Close, but not quite
That’s why you should never rely on a computer to do your translating.
The Germans and the Dutch (as in peoples, not nation-states) have an interconnected history. However, their relationships with Eastern Europe, and in Poland in particular, are very different. Although the Dutch also had considerable power in the region, theirs was practically completely economic. The Germans waged war after bloody war in the region, and they dominated the region through military power and cultural dominance. Through a process of “Germanification” they attempted to destroy and eliminate Polish ethnic identity. As well, most of present day Poland was historically part of Prussia proper, and Poles lived only as a suppressed minority there. Because of these grounds/reasons/aspects we must always be aware when we ascribe phrases (or traits) from German to Poles.
