Cumiskey Named to AHL All-Star Team
Since you can never have too many Kyle Cumiskey stories, Lake Erie's Kyle Cumiskey is one of the 24 Canadian-born players named to the AHL All-Star team today. He's the only Monster to make the squad, although former Monster Johnny Boychuk was also named.
The Planet USA squad - which encompasses all non-Canadian players - will be announced tomorrow.

I think the kid has nothing left to do in the AHL
except enjoy skating out of his mind and pushing the puck like he’s Sandis Ozolinsh. Dude is nuts.

The bad news
There are what, 25 other players on the Cleveland roster who aren’t All Stars? I’m not a depth expert like the gentlemen who brought in Darcy Tucker in the offseason, but I believe that might be a bad thing?

technically, there’s still a chance for an American to make the squad…

i have just one question about cumiskey
what do we do with him? he’s got electrifying speed, decent defensive acumen, and great puck-handling skills. but he’s also a weak passer and bad at shooting. where exactly does a guy like that fit on a team with Liles already?
I don’t think you can have enough offensive defenseman. The kid is still young, he’ll get much stronger in the next few years if he wants to be a great player and hits the weight room… unlike Svats who is totally cool with being broken by every all star game. He’ll get better at shooting the more he gets to practice with NHL players, though I don’t think he’ll ever be a sniper.
Foote will be gone at the end of next season, if not this one. Clark is out after this one, if not before. I don’t get him, he was far and away the Avs’ best guy before he was hurt last year. There should be at least slot or two open.

To be fair
Boychuk’s development in the Colorado organization had absolutely stalled. The club had clearly soured on him, and he needed a change of scenery.
Can’t defend the return though…

PlanetUSA team announced today
no Monsters on that one, although SOB was named (Chris Bourque).

cBo
is very popular with Caps fans who have seen him up with the Caps numerous times this season, along with an entire slew of Hershey Bears. Because of all the Caps’ injuries this season, the fans were jokingly calling the team the “Washington Bears” for a while. At least 4 of the called-up Bears scored their first career NHL goals with the Caps this season. During all those injuries, the Russian Machine just kept chugging along and helped keep his team 2nd in the conference standings (and despite a slow start on his part).
[The Capitals are another of my favorite teams and they are keeping me in a cheery mood in spite of what’s going on in Colorado].
My wife and I went to some charity exhibition game a couple of years ago in Manchester. It was mostly ex-Bruins. Ray was there (which was why my wife and I were there) and Chris played as well. He was a teenager – maybe 16 or so. Since everyone else was retired (or non-pros like Denis Leary), Chris was the star of the game as he was the only one really trying. And now, because of that game, he’s an AHL all-star. Or something.
