Trade Rumours begin

Giguere talked about how hard it is to trade players nowadays, with all the teams being so close to the cap. This, to me, implied that he's willing to stirr things up a bit and make some roster changes.

As puck daddy is starting up their first 'rumors live chat', the Avs are being thrown to the sharks as sellers. According to the fourth period

According to a radio report stemming from Ottawa's Team 1200, the Avalanche and Senators are discussing a trade that might involve forward Marek Svatos and defenseman John-Michael Liles. It's uncertain what the Senators might ship back to Colorado in exchange.

JML and Svats combine for a cap hit of 6.3M, where the senators have 2.6M in capspace left. The 3.7M left could be traded our way in the shape of Mike Fisher (12 pts), a hockey player I know nothing about. But would there honestly be a single Avalanche fan interested in this trade? It looks absurd.

It's also very unlikely they're gonna be trading Alfredsson, the life-long face of the franchise.

Dany Heatley and his 7.5M caphit, however, could be making the trip to Denver. I'm sure we'd be able to pay him with all the injuries. He brings 0.95 pts/game to the table this season, exactly like Liles and Svatos (freaky coincidence; careerwise pts/g are also exactly the same at 1.10). This would look like a good trade for the Avalanche, as they'd be able to dress another player without expecting any point-production from him. Where are we gonna find another body to dress though, with all the injuries and all? My conclusion for this trade is, even though it looks tempting, a solid 'thanks, but no thanks'.

The same goes for the younger and cheaper Spezza, who would also better, as he's a center instead of a LW.

The biggest downside on both these trades is that both of these signings would make a return of Foppa, our savior, to the unipron even less likely.

Regardless of this rumour, I strongly believe that JML is one of the players that is in line (together with Stastny and Wolski maybe) to be the next face of the franchise.

I wouldn't mind seeing a "Tucker for Bruno" deal, with FG proudly admitting he made a mistake and makes up for it.

I would think Svatos for Vermette+ might be a bit more likely. Maybe Clark for Vermette too, as they need an offensive defenseman.

Agree totally. Watched the Ottawa game last night, they get zero offense after the first line.

That was a rumour awhile ago, going after Vermette

I just don’t see JML going anywhere, he’s the only young, capable defense man they have. (Cumiskey isn’t there yet.)

Unless the Avalanche go in to hardcore suck on purpose rebuild mode, which I don’t think will ever happen, Liles is here to stay. I think that’s a good thing.

by JonHaven on Jan 7, 2009 1:55 PM MST reply actions

I agree as well. Liles is here to stay.

The fact that we all think that is the reason he’ll go…Which I agree would suck.

I would be super pissed if JML was traded. He really seems to want lifetime Av status. Plus who do we have that could replace his production. Getting rid of JML is a total thumbs down stupid move.

I saw this

There was a rumor going around a week or two ago, but I never saw a link so I dropped it.

I think the only way this makes sense for the Avs is if they get Spezza for these two. Liles is too good, and too young, to trade for Vermette and parts. I think Ottawa is looking for Cap relief too, since Spezza, Alfredsson Heatly combine for a $19M cap hit for the next 5 years (seriously that’s a huge chunk of change invested over the long term). I’ve also heard Spezza is available.

But anything less than Spezza or Heatley for these two and only effort the Avs should make is holding in their laughter until they hang up the phone.

ya, i’d be interested in this, but I jsut don’t see Ottawa seeking such a small return for either of those 2. they could get waaaay more, especially in the area of D or goaltending from florida or columbus.

by thedoctor on Jan 7, 2009 2:37 PM MST up reply actions

Yeah, but Florida and Columbus are midway (or farther) through a rebuild and both sets of management have faith in the young cores of players and the growth of those two franchises. There are many in Ottawa that believe the Sens should be blown up, starting with Spezza and Vermette.

by Mike @ MHH on Jan 7, 2009 2:53 PM MST up reply actions

you’re telling me Columbus or Florida wouldn’t sell their souls for a bonafide #1 center in Spezza? Let alone a top 10 player in this league like Heatley?

by thedoctor on Jan 7, 2009 4:43 PM MST up reply actions

Yes.

Columbus has followed Nashville’s building plan the last couple of season, so I don’t see them throwing in the towel and moving the number of assets/picks it would take to make a worthwhile trade with Ottawa. RJ Umberger is getting paid good money to center Rick Nash, so he’d likely go down a line if Spezza came the other way, but looking at Columbus’ roster, I don’t see a ton that Ottawa would be interested in other than Huselius or maybe Modin. Spezza for Umberger is pretty unbalanced from a cash standpoint, so something else would have to go in the deal. They seem to like Filatov and Voracek so they have some depth at the wing to make the Heatley deal work, but nothing from a money standpoint that would involve 2 or 3 guys. That seems like a lot to give up during a rebuild for one guy. But that’s just my opinion.

As for Florida, they appear to be sold on Horton and Weiss up the middle and have stated that those two are untouchable, so one of them would have to go the other way in a deal for Spezza. Heatley is a more interesting case because Booth is the only young gun on the wing and I could see a big sign and trade for Bouwmeester since he’s leaving town anyway. Either way, Florida is up against the cap as it is so picking up a $7 mil or $7.5 mil guy means somebody $IGNIFICANT has to go the other way. That being said, Florida has a history of mismanagement, so anything is possible. They traded Luongo for Bertuzzi for chrissakes.

Colorado Avalanche: Gellin' and Propellin'!!!

by Mike @ MHH on Jan 9, 2009 3:04 PM MST up reply actions

Liles is too good, and too young, to trade for Vermette and parts.

Liles isn’t that good or that young. He’s 28. His production is slipping, not growing. 44, 44, 26, on a pace for about 35 this year. He counts $4 mil (?) against the cap. What’s so good about that?

Vermette’s having a terrible season, but he was a 20-goal scorer 3 years in a row before this. Not trying to justify that trade, just am continually surprised at the praise JML gets around here when he’s clearly not improving and is, in fact, declining in his play.

by Dan Winkler on Jan 8, 2009 5:43 PM MST up reply actions

anybody will decline a little when they lose Rob Blake as their partner. (Maybe not TODAY’S Blake but you know what I mean). I think 4 Mil is about right for his caliber of defenseman.

Plus, while his production has gone down, you have to admit he is much better in his own end now.

by InYoFace on Jan 8, 2009 10:16 PM MST up reply actions

i can't get over it

how much people look solely at certain stats to determine a player’s worth. yeah, i’m biased, but the fact remains, Liles has ROCKED this year. he’s always been known as an offensive d-man, but this year, he’s been so strong in his own end AND he’s starting to shoot from the blueline more, jump in the play more, and just be THERE more. i truly believe he’s the kind of player that you want to keep around for years to come, another “face of the Avalanche.”

When hell freezes over, I'll play hockey there too!

by BeachNSnowGirl on Jan 9, 2009 12:03 AM MST up reply actions

Last night was a very good example of him being “THERE”. Almost every time he was on the ice he was making you notice his play in some way or another. The first power play the Avs had, they accumulated 5 shots, 2-3 were his. They sustained pressure and he was the one keeping the puck in. He definitely had a very good game last night, as did Wolski.

I don’t want to see Liles go but the only Senator I really want on the Avs is Heatley. And if sacrifices have to be made then so be it, but I’d be incredibly surprised if the Sens trade Heatley, he’s one of their top players and they only just made him an ‘A’ this year so it seems they want him to stay and maybe take over from Alfrfeddson in the future.

Comedy is tragedy plus time.

I get your point, Drunk Driving isn’t funny, and it was very tragic. But the Titanic was tragic and people make jokes about it all the time. The Hindenburg was tragic, and people joke about it. Same with the Great depression, World War 2, Kurt Cobain’s death and a boatload of other things.

Mel Brooks did a song and dance about the Spansih Inquisition, which was literally a witch hunt.

Well, as a song I like says

“I make money, money don’t make me.”

People all over america make a boatload of money on completely retarded stuff, not just family guy. Its not just america, there are a lot of retards everywhere. Doesn’t change the fact that the show sucks, and I really don’t care if he keeps making it. I know how to turn the channel. However, if I could think of something that ridiculously weak (or steal someone else’s jokes like he does) and make money off of it, I’d do it. I just can’t think to that low of a level.

Honestly, if I laughed at that show even once, I would not have written either of these comments. But due to the fact that the GF likes the show, I’ve seen it enough to not write it off as one bad episode, and I just don’t find it amusing. At all. If you do, then bully for you. Getting wasted, driving a car, wrecking and your friends dying as a result of your negligent douchery may not constitute “murder” but you lose all immunity from verbal political correctness in my book. I don’t think he is a murderer, because it was an accident that came from stupidity. If he learned from it and changes his life for the better because of the mistake then great, if not…well I’m just glad I’m not the one who has to judge him. And if he ever does it again….

You know

with the news today that Sakic’s back surgery, even if he is back next year it can’t be at $6M (right!?!). It may be with the Avs effort to try and get Spezza who is only slightly overpriced at $7M (cap hit) per season. He’s 25 and a really great player.

That would ensure the Avs that they are set at one of the most important positions for a very long time.

But to be honest I’d rather see them go another way. Hopefully Wolski pans out in the center (so far so good) and get some second and 3rd line scorers, and a few better defenders.
