Well, here we are again. A meer 172 days since last season came to an unglorious end and we're right back at it. The reset button has been pressed, and we're right back on even footing with all the other NHL teams. It's been kind of a wild and crazy summer in Avalanche land. We have a new coach and GM (neither of who were the first choice for the position). We've lost a few star players (Super Joe and Ryan Smyth) and more than a few character guys (Lappy, Ben Guite, Cody McCormick). We've gained a potential new star on defense (Kyle Quincey) and what we hope to be a pretty solid goaltender (Craig Anderson), but we're going to have to see them in action before passing judgement.
How good (or bad) are the Avalanche going to be? We're about to find out, as we welcome the reigning President's Trophy winning San Jose Sharks to the Pepsi Center. The Sharks were a tremendous team during the regular season, but flamed out in the playoffs amid whispers that the team doesn't have enough mental toughness to succeed when it counts. To rectify this, the Sharks brought in a notorious quitter in Dany Heatley. I'm not sure that's going to do anything in the leadership department, but that douchebag sure can play hockey. The thought of him and Joe Thornton playing together is just damn scary. You can take a peek at the Sharks' offseason changes over at Fear The Fin (one change not listed there is the recent naming of Rob Blake as Sharks' captain).
For the Avs tonight, Dater has the projected lines up for tonight's game on his blog. Matt Duchene will make his NHL debut, and possibly Radar O'Reilly as well. It will be the Avalanche debut of Craig Anderson, Kyle Quincey and, if he dresses, David Koci. Anderson will be starter for the Avs. I'm presuming Evgeni Nabokov for the Sharks.
The game is broadcast exclusively on Versus which means DirecTV users are out of luck. However, if you check out the comments section of this thread you'll find a lot of, uh, alternate sources to view the game on. If anyone has any working links, please share them below. Go Avs!

semi-breaking news
it’s early, but I thought I’d mention that it looked liked Ruslan Salei was in street clothes in the locker room during the Sakic thing. Jones and Preissing as well of course. didn’t notice Radar / Koci / Hendricks

Does anybody spit more than Dany Heatley? Every time the camera is on him, he kicks out at least two. Dude must hate saliva.
Ouch
As a speedy but well qualified and good driver, I hope to say that that was not his fault. Even Snyders parents have come on record as saying so. So he may be a douchebag, but not because he accidentally killed his friend.

We do have an awesome accent. The rugby ads annoyed the hell out of me cause I hate neanderthals hitting each other while throwing a ball backwards, the cricket ons aren’t too bad the first couple times and the soccer ones annoy me since It shows just how much more soccer games Australia sees compared to Ice Hockey.
Atleast you see what I have to put up with for 2 Hockey games a week.

my biggest issue was having to watch commercials, which I normally don’t have to do. the Aussie commercials were interesting at first because of the fun accents and new products (cricket). but, that wore on me pretty quickly.
I will be really enjoying watching the Avs on Saturday as it should be watched – with me happily cruising through the commercials with my Tivo.

by David Driscoll-Carignan on Oct 2, 2009 7:46 AM MDT up reply actions
Yeah I hate watching the ads when I’m forced to. I recorded it since I was at work so I could just skip all the ads. I guess it’s similar to me listening to the radio feeds, the first few times I hear ads is kinda cool just to hear the accent and general wierdness of them before they start making me angry sometime between the end of the first period and start of the second. Technically crickets a sport and not a product though. Just wanted to clarify that, you can’t walk into a Target and buy cricket.

Thoughts so far
Liking Quincey. Loving Duchene. Hell, even Koci did his job by sticking up for his teammate Hendricks on that cross check. Wolski may have finally broken out. SICK pass from Stastny to set up that second Wolski goal.
And I have not seen a preview that has rated the Avs higher than 15th in the West this year. I want this team to play with a chip on their shoulder and so far it looks like it.
Joe Sakic. Captain forever.
I meant primarly MSM
Some Blogs have them higher, Mirtle not withstanding, but a lot of these predictions seemed based on…..we have no idea how good this team will be so we will predict they stay in the same place.

Quincey...
I posted on this back in the Spring, but I did a statistical analysis on what players in the league were the best “deals” looking at their stats and salaries last season. Quincey was #1 in the league according to it. Not a perfect analysis by any means (he plays way above his “level” because he was on his entry-level contract), but I’m seeing why he was ranked that high. He’s got great vision. I’d love to see more of those fast break outlet passes like his one to Duchene. They just missed connecting on a redirection also.

Love it!
Bob, you should be in politics, because you can spin your way around anything. You don’t say anything about Tucker, but you’re right there with the anti-Granato stuff again. You think it’s as easy as flipping a light switch? Is Sacco the only reason the Avs finished some checks last night? You don’t think it could be a little more complex than that? A few reason off the top of my head – younger team and more aggressive players; veterans had the “oh fuck” reaction when Salei and Benjamin Button got scratched and thought, “wow, better play hard to keep my job”; Quincey helps set a tone (much like Brian Dawkins does with the Broncos).
And it’s only 1 game, but I like the fact that Sacco’s a hardass, it’s great to see, but the players should have been ashamed of themselves last year.

492???
I log on to see we got 492 comments on this thread when half of the major players were there in person??? YOU PEOPLE ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Okay, on to the good stuff. That game was freaking awesome. Anderson is totally the man. Tucker didn’t totally suck. And the special teams totally were actually there…in person…on the ice…doing their thing. Woh, huh?
On the personal side, it was so freaking cool to meet everyone! I’d post the pics I took (with faces all smudged for those who desire a small online footprint) but my work laptop is lame and won’t let me. But the general roll call at the pre-game festivities was as follows: Mike, Mrs & fam (btw, Mikey, your cousin is hot…if I didn’t bat solely for the Y chromosome team…I’ll stop there); Structural Poke & fam (I really want to know the story behind that name, dude); Tex (your eye looked fine, my love) & Bubblegum (it’s nice outside the baesment, isn’t it); Jibbles & fam (I’m going to assume it was the recent pics that made Jibs recognize me instead of the general air of ‘hide your sons’ that must surround me. lol.); Drakenlot (all the way from freaking Canada, eh); Hopenwhatever (I will never get that right, tho I love the story behind it!!); the Canary & fam (and what a damn cute fam it is!); Dario (who is way cuter than I expected) but loves to do those crazy expressions in pics); Bob in Boulder (dude, where the hell did you go during most of the pregame shit); mfred20 (or whatever it is…why don’t you people come up with names that are easy to remember??? also much cuter than expected); glavfan & entourage (aka Rachael, who may quickly become my BFF cuz she’s so damn cool); and me. (I hope I didn’t forget anyone…I blame the beer. Damn it’s good to get Fat Tire so freaking fresh!!!)
Amazingly cool things about the game:
- all the Avs players wore jerseys during the ceremony and warm up that had “Sakic” and “19” on them in the regular place with their last names under the 19
- the tribute was incredible; if you didn’t get to see it, find it. during the game they played a part 1 and part 2 of Joe’s greatest moments…I’m sure they’re all the ones you’d expect but it was awesome experiencing the crowd’s reaction in unison to the goals and the gestures (i.e., borque and the cup)
- seeing #39 actually do something…and do it well.
- hearing the crowd chant “anderson” after the first wave of amazing saves in that 5-on-3
- seeing Sakic drop the ceremonial puck for footer and blake (could not have been better if it was planned)
- watching this team that all the pundits say is going to suck eggs this season kick the shit out of last year’s president trophy winning team. i swear the sharks players looked freaking ass stunned.
- being there when duchene and o’reilly got their first of many many points as an NHLer
And so many many more moments. It was fucking amazing.

Foppa was there,,,
I had crazy-awesome seats: section 104, 11 rows up directly to the side of the right defensive circle. But I think my friend may have me beat when she was able to snap this picture and later on text me with “Oh, and Sakic is about 6 feet from me.”

Lucky girl!
Tonight was absolutely amazing.
It was worth every penny that I spent to fly in from Seattle to watch this game. I would not trade this experience for anything in the world. The fact that Craig Anderson looks like he may be the real deal in net is one of the many things that has me really excited about this season for the Avs.
By the way, how much jump did Matt Duchene have tonight?!?! If he would have scored on that breakaway the Pepsi Center would have came down in a heap of ruble! I am glad to see him get his first point in the league though. I don’t think that he is going anywhere. He is in a uniporn to stay!
Defending Big D: A Dallas Stars blog on SBN: easy to use, free to join.
Ok, so
I really thought the avs looked good tonight, in fact I would say that was their best game in 2 years. Then I talked to a friend who went and he said they got outshot 40-15 or some shit, couldn’t play at all, and we’re in for a long ride. I just know I was happy with how they played, and if this is only because of js night, well so be it, it was a damn good night.
Get rid of the loser point
they may have been outshot, but a lot of them were bad angle shots. they did a pretty good job of keeping the sharks on the sides. and the avs had them scrambling quite a few times as well. if you ask me, for the pressue and butterflies of an emotion-filled opening night, the first regular season nhl game for two of the guys (with duchene having quite a bit beyone winning games riding on his shoulders), guys so young that svats is considered an old man on the team…they played very well, composed and hungry, and didn’t let intimidation get the best of them. they had moments when they were back on their heals and play went way too long in their own end. they also made a lot of mistakes, some costly (like the cumiskey-clark debacle that led to the sharks first goal). these things may make for a long season, but the energy in that building, the way the crowd got into and erupted into a frenzy when they put duchene’s mug on the big screen….well, it’s going to be a damn fun ride if you ask me.

Game was freaking amazing
It’s still surreal.
Especially the fact I got to play scrimmage right afterwards. I owe Justin and the Avalanche Guild so much.
So long Super Joe. In a class of your own in every sense of the word.
Just a couple of notes from this couched observer…nothing too in depth:
Tucker: He actually played pretty well. One dumb penalty (to be expected)…a fantastic tip on the first goal, and was pretty much invisible the rest of the night (as he should be)
The first goal for the Sharks could not be put on Anderson. Cumiskey made a god awful pass that Clark (not shockingly) overskated…which left Andy out to dry. Just after that he was made 2 fantastic saves, including one falling back into the net. Outside of the blemish in the 2nd, he was then on cruise the rest of the way. Nice to see that from an Avs goalie for a change…especially with the heat on in the 3rd
I think what I liked the most was actually seeing some energy, and an actual “give a shit” attitude from this team. I still don’t think they are going to win a lot of games, but from the looks of it, they won’t go down without a fight.
Hopefully Liles can take some pointers from Quincey on how to get a point shot on the PP off quickly. That would make for a killer PP on some nights.
On to the next one!
It just reminds you how much they mailed in for the second 1/2 of last season.
This team will make the playoffs and upset the Sharks in the first round...it's our turn.
