After 5 Games...

These are the things I like about the Colorado Avalanche:

  • Being competitive in every game
  • Having a point shot on the powerplay
  • An effective penalty kill
  • Scott Hannan being a +3
  • Craig Anderson
  • Kyle Quincey
  • Darcy Tucker
  • That Duchene kid
  • Having a very real chance of being ahead of the Wings in the standings when we play them on Saturday
  • The sun shining on my face

These are the things that I don't like about the Colorado Avalanche:

  • Being outshot in every third period so far
  • Faceoffs
  • Liking Darcy Tucker
  • Chris Stewart
  • Liles' inability to clear the puck
  • Matt Hendricks in the shootout
  • An ineffective 2nd line
  • The sun shining on my face

On the whole, the pros outweigh the cons, don't you think?

Coaching staff actually, ummmm, doing stuff. Benching Wolski for a period. Benching Stewart today. Benching Hensuck most of the year so far. Think Arny would have played most of last season with Sacco around?

agreed on Stewie

he looks completely useless out there, totally lost.

by thedoctor on Oct 12, 2009 3:14 PM MDT reply actions

+/-

+ Wolski coming into form

+Duchene/OReilly playing ability

-Duchene/OReilly scoring ability (assists not withstanding)

+Less goon’s, more ‘gamers’ (tucker turning it around, stewart not being there just to fight)

-Budaj has clearly lost his spot (only a negative cause I always wanted him to succeed)

+Hejduk reveling in his gotta score every game role.

I wouldn’t mind a little more goon from those who can do it though

just thinking about that reminds me. Remember when Hendricks was called up last year and was an undisciplined madman? Sacco seems to have these guys on a real short leash.

Signing Koci seems like it was a totally useless move, IMO. He is taking up a spot on the roster for ummm, O’Reilly maybe. If you take enforcement out of the picture, O’Reilly>Koci.

Colorado Avalanche: Please excuse the mess while we are under construction.

Too True…unless Koci and/or Mcleod start dropping the gloves to protect their teammates, Koci doesn’t have a reason to be on this team.

Koci does give the Avs some size, even with enforcement out of the picture. His role is to be an enforcer though. Every team seems to have a guy like this, and i don’t think Koci has played bad. I basically see him as a replacement for what Parker was for the team the past couple of years

Svatos had better score more if he’s going to be -5 after 5 games. That second line will take shape when they figure out who to put on the left side. It’s got to be someone good defensively and tough…that eliminates a bunch of guys. I’d try Hendricks there and see if anything happens.

This team will make the playoffs and upset the Sharks in the first round...it's our turn.

During the post game interview on the Boston radio station Svatos was commenting on how the team is committed to Sacco’s defensive system.

I think he’s playing better defensively, but he is still on pace for -82. not that that’s the best means of measurement but he’s got to tighten up more.

This team will make the playoffs and upset the Sharks in the first round...it's our turn.

by An Unmitigated Disaster on Oct 12, 2009 4:29 PM MDT up reply actions

After today's game... I wouldn't mind these lines.

Wolski – Stastny – Hejduk (of course)
Galiardi – Duchene – Jones OR could be Jones- Duchene – Svatos ?
Tucker – O’Reilly – Svatos
Mcleod – Hendricks – Stewart

Koci, and Hensick play as needed – if another player is benched at the time or need more. Also, Koci only averages 2-4 minutes per game. So he really isn’t needed, at all.

by toothandnailer777 on Oct 12, 2009 3:34 PM MDT reply actions

Oh.

what about switching Cumiskey for Jones on the powerplay for the point… he has a nice slap shot.

And not having Duchene in front of the net during the powerplay. have a more behind the net kind of style powerplay on the right side… point shot when needed?

by toothandnailer777 on Oct 12, 2009 3:35 PM MDT up reply actions

Don't understand Duchene in front of net either

He isn’t exactly a big body forward, is he? You’d think they would try to get Wolski, Jones and Stewart to fill that role. This is definitely where they miss guys like Bruno and Smyth. Man those guys are great in front of the net.

but i do think he would be more effective in behind the net play or trying to do more of a passing powerplay—getting ppl out of position and then shooting. Kind of like Hejduk’s powerplay goal the other night. Plus, I feel like Stastny is more effective in front of the net.

Some "after five games" stuff with regards to the current standings:

At 3-1-1 for 7 points, the Avs are tied with the Flyers for the same record and fifth most points in the league.

Only Pittsburgh, New York Rangers, Los Angeles, and Calgary have more than that with 8 points. Albeit that may change tonight as half of the teams in the league have only played 4 games while a hand full have still only played 3.

The Avs are currently second in the North West division standings to Calgary. Again, that may change tonight. If Edmonton beats Nashville, they will be tied with the Avs for the same record and number of points.

by c0nquistad0rian on Oct 12, 2009 4:22 PM MDT reply actions

Just got back from the game...

My thoughts after being there:

1. I go to every home bruins game, give or take, and the Avalanche are the only team that the Bruins’ fans respect. It is no mystery that the fans still remember what we did for Bourque.
2. Coach Sacco really is on top of his game with changes. He had a preset plan to prevent the Royalty line from playing against Chara and Morris. Without fail they would take dump the puck and put the 3rd line out. They had some shorter shifts but it worked because Stastny seemed to get more room when not against Chara. Surprise surprise. I like this intelligent, proactive, planned coaching.
3. Quincey played so well as to have the other team’s fan yelling at Savard not to take the puck down Quincey’s side.
4. In person, Radar is even better than I thought. He plays nothing like a rookie. Duchene was just as impressive as on tv.
5. I was amazed that the shot total for the 3rd was 12-3 for the Bruins. Even though the shots were lop-sided, the period didn’t seem THAT titled. We had way too many passes go through the crease or slot that should be shots on net. If those passes turn into shots we’ll be putting 30 shots on net a game.

I know right. Amazing. He was willing to give that line fewer minutes in order to utilize more time without Chara. Mind you the Bruins 2nd D-pairing is good, but had that line not had to deal with Weber ALL NIGHT against Nashville they might have had more chances.

If the Avs legitimately think they can make the playoffs, keep O’Reilly . If not, i don’t think it would be a horrible idea to let him play one more year in juniors. He will get first line ice time there, and could develop his game to an even higher level. I worry a bit that playing in a 3rd line role with the Avs will stunt his growth as a player. The kid already has NHL game obviously and does all the little stuff right, but he could fine tune some offensive skills in Erie. Either way this kid has a high ceiling, and I am excited to see how good he can be.

Sports don't build character, they reveal it

by Cotts on Oct 12, 2009 11:12 PM MDT up reply actions

I would disagree a little with you. O’Reilly is a responsible, hard working smart player and is perfect as a 3rd line center. With Duchene and Stastny ahead of him on the first and second line, he pretty much is in the same spot he would be in if he went back to Juniors. I think that learning the role you will have in the NHL is better then having a different role in Juniors. The “he is only 18” comment applies here as well, and I think he is exactly where he needs to be.

GO AVS!!!

by slapshotr2007 on Oct 13, 2009 10:14 AM MDT up reply actions

I totally agree. Watching him, I honestly don’t think he will be a 1st or 2nd line center. He’ll be a wicked 3rd, tho, that causes the other team trouble with who to match up with whom when the 1-2 punch now has a deadly right hook coming right behind.

And even more exciting is that guys NOT putting in the effort seem to get into Sacco’s doghouse very very quickly (see Wolski and Stewart), which I love. line combos

Injuries are going to come so it is kind of mute right now. But given that Stewie will not suck forever, the guy who just doesn’t fit in well anywhere is Svatos. He screws up the second line because of lack of size and defensive inabilities and adds little to a grinder 3rd line. And how can you justify a “scorer” on the 4th? His only real contribution to the team is the second power play unit. I would trade him now for something. Sit down and play with line combos on paper…he doesn’t fit anywhere.

by Digit on Oct 13, 2009 7:39 AM MDT reply actions

I actually was chatting with some Ranger fans about this on HF, they seemed receptive to a Liles + Clark + Hensick for Drury + Girardi offer. I’d do it, I think. Drury would be a perfect wing for Stastny or Duchene.

It’s also pretty well established on there that Svatos is worth a low 2nd to a high 3rd at the deadline, and the Penguins would be a pretty perfect destination for him.

Hensick is probably only worth another overhyped/underperforming prospect at this point, maybe a low pick. He’s better to keep imo.

In addition to the horrible new radio deal (I still do not get 1510 at all in Boulder), Kroenke further screwed the locals here by no longer having any games on local, over the air, TV. Several years ago about 10 games per season were on a local over the air channel (channel 20, I believe). I used to call my grandma and tell her when games were on that she could watch. It is pretty ignorant to lock out a large chunk of your fan base with outrageous ticket prices and no free TV at all.

I’m honestly surprised to not see “Uniprons” somewhere on that second list…

It’s too horrible to even mention….maybe we’ll get lucky and the upcoming jersey will morph into the dominate jersey (first they just need to fix a few things and make a white version for home)

Have we heard anything about who will be a healthy scratch tonight?

My money is on Koci.

Not.

betcha it’s stewie and hensick again.

by thedoctor on Oct 13, 2009 1:33 PM MDT up reply actions

I think Stewie will get the opportunity to bounce back.

Koci needs to be in to counter the truculence (If he doesn’t play tonight, why the hell do we even have him).

My guess: Hensick and Hendricks.

didn’t hendricks just score? not saying you’re wrong, but that would be a hilarious message…

by thedoctor on Oct 13, 2009 3:13 PM MDT up reply actions

hendricks didn’t do too well last night so my money is on him and hensick. go figure that the coach who would’ve benched tucker doesn’t need to bench tucker. god, please help me wrap my head around this new sham wow situation.

I thought Hendricks had a decent game against Boston. No worse than Svatos.

he just seemed a little out of position at times, had a couple of turnovers. maybe it just looked lacking when put in comparison to how he’s been playing prior to last night.

i have to say, it’s nice to have a hard time deciding who to bench rather than deciding who should play…another difference from last year.

Not that he's played bad

I just don’t know who else they’d scratch.

Much like The Canary said, when you’re the King Of The World and creater of everything you don’t need to know how to spell or use grammer. I leave that crap for my minions.
