The surprising road trip continues. After dispatching the Boston Bruins yesterday, the Avalanche travel to Toronto for the second game of a back-to-back (and the first of two consecutive games in a building where they spell "center" wrong).
The Maple Leafs were also in action yesterday, if you consider getting shelled 7-2 as "action". The Leafs haven't been very good so far, with 15 players currently sporting a negative +/-. Vesa Toskala has a GAA above 5 at the moment. He is under fire in Toronto (Pension Plan Puppets called him the finished Finn this morning)...but we won't get to see him tonight. He's injured and so instead we'll face Joey MacDonald tonight. While we fans should certainly make fun of the Leafs, the Avalanche shouldn't get too cocky as this is a text book trap game. We especially want to watch out for Lee Stempaniak who has 8 points in 12 career games against the Avs.
We don't yet know who will be in net for the Avs. Peter Budaj is the presumed starter, but I wouldn't be shocked if Craig Anderson got the nod. Just a guess, but I wonder if Joe Sacco will want to build as much early momentum as possible. [Shocking Update: I was right. Anderson in net]. Both Milan Hejduk and Kyle Quincey have a point in every game so far this year.
Tonight's game is a field trip game. During the first period, we are all cordially invited to visit Pension Plan Puppets' game thread. During the 2nd period, the Leaf fans will stop by here (to crash our servers).

Actually, David, the Leafs traded their first round picks for both 2010 and 2011. (and a second rounder in 2010).
That being said, I still don’t think the Leafs will be a lottery team.

the whole concept of "should win"
is a little misleading, imo. even the best teams in the nhl lose 25-35% of the their games. in football, much better teams can win 90+% of te time…in hockey, not always the case. I’d say closer to 70% is the best you could hope for in the NHL.
so, I’m not going to freak out if we lose this game. It happens in the NHL, even in “should win” games.

Poll question
so, I could use some feedback on the previews / live threads. Currently, we combine them and put them up an hour before the game. But that means you have to wait all day for the preview (not that they are all that overwhelming to begin with).
for a while last year I experimented with the preview during the day and then a separate live thread, but I found that to be kind of confusing and you’d have conversations spread between both (jibbles head explodes).
open to feedback on what’s the best way to handle these

I am a little surprised nobody has asked this but does this mean Altitude will NOT be televising all non-Versus/NBC games this year? Or is this just a special case because of the game being in Toronto or something? Center Ice is a god send for this game but what about when the free preview is done?

What on earth could Versus gain by forcing Altitude not to show tonight’s game when Versus is not airing it? Or….why is Versus stupid and buying the rights to show two games occurring at the same time? Good job Versus. Avs fans seemed to have your back on opening night with the DirecTV debacle with all those signs, nice way to pay us back.
If Versus was smart, they could do what CBS and FOX does with NFL games. They air the marquee game unless they have the rights to a local team’s game at the same time and air that one instead.

and this schedule of Altitude games includes tonight’s game.
I don’t recall ever seeing that rule before. they are really saying that any Avalanche game on at the same time as a Vs game can’t be televised…at all?

Versus does not have the rights to Colorado vs. Toronto.
What an awful agreement. That is really alienating. Any Avs game on Monday or Tuesday night may not be televised if they are not playing on Versus that night. So is this what fans of other non-“marquee” teams have to put up with?

Do Blue Jacket fans have this problem tonight too. According to Center Ice, that game is also airing at the same time as the Versus game. They are playing Calgary so they get a Canadian feed like us but damn.

I think Altitude originally thought they would be able to carry this game so maybe MSG and NESN both think they will too. I wonder if it gets knocked off. Maybe the fan bases from two large city teams will be able to put some pressure on the NHL/Versus about this.
