Around SBN: Will Rhymes 'Fine' After Being Hit By Pitch And Fainting

A Little Rain For Our Monday Parade

Just a small reminder that the NHL season is very, very long. (Too long, but that's another show).

Through the first 8 games in 2009, the Avalanche have scored 27 goals - 10 on the power play - and have 13 points.

Through the first 8 games in 2008, the Avalanche had scored 29 goals - 9 on the power play - and had 10 points. Over the next 5 games the Avs scored just 8 goals and lost all 5. And I think you know how the season ended.

Don't start waiting in line for those playoff tickets just yet.

How many goals did they give up though?

17 through 8 games this year (not counting goal 4, the shootout point for the Hawks)

Last year through 8, the Avs had given up 24

by chiavsfan on Oct 19, 2009 3:16 PM MDT up reply actions

How does that work?

Does the one point win in a shootout count as an extra goal? And does the difference making player in the shootout get credited with a game winning goal (Hejduk the other night against the wheel, for example).

Hey Peter McNab, I'm starting to see sunshine and rainbows here.

they don’t count them as goals normally

To clarify, they add a goal to the final score, but it doesn’t count as a goal against in any statistical category.

I heard that both goalies get credit for a shutout for a 0-0 game that goes to shootout.

Goal. Tending. Makes a difference. As does have a PP QB and some youth up front. Also remember that Sakic got hurt about this time last year as well.

Difference

We’ve looked a lot better this season than at the same point last season. Goaltending and also having a coach that actually put a system in place really helps.

by PinkSnootchies on Oct 19, 2009 3:33 PM MDT reply actions

We have a Goaltender and a lot more swagger than we had last year. I’m not expecting the playoffs but damn if I won’t be enjoying a 10th place finish at least!

Bills fan? In Colorado? It's more likely than you think.

by UZ on Oct 19, 2009 3:41 PM MDT reply actions

I think I actually dread that more than anything. A playoff spot would be fun. A last place finish would mean we would probably get another KEY piece for the future team (and would know what we are doing at the deadline).

But a 10th? Sounds like just squandering another year in mediocrity. DO NOT WANT.

Of course that could be said about a low playoff seed. But I think the guys are young enough that even with a low seed, we might be able to surprise a few teams. Like at the start of this year :D.

Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

by Aph on Oct 19, 2009 3:50 PM MDT up reply actions   1 recs

exactly

do not want at all

the oilers are good examples of what can happen if you wither in the middle. Second round or deeper contention (i.e. a real shot at winning a playoff series) OR a good draft pick.

P.S. speaking of good drafting, Boston is so f’n loaded for picks next year…

Rain

You may go “hang some crepe” on some other team’s websites, and it might stick. However, the new wind our team has — and I include most all of our players as part of that wind — will blow the crepe you attempt hang here away. We might not stay number one in our division, but we won’t be anywhere near last. They are such a thrill to watch compared to last year! GO AVS!!

by Lyn on Oct 19, 2009 4:04 PM MDT reply actions

parade

hmmm goals, goals against… frankly the only statistic that matters is wins and losses. If we win by one goal every game, who cares, thats still in the win column and two points in the race. the only thing the avs can compare themselves to is the other team on the ice, not past years or stats. frankly whoever walks out with more goals in the night is all that matters, so far that us. go avs!

by joesakicisahockeygod on Oct 19, 2009 4:10 PM MDT reply actions

But the correlation between GF/GA and wins and losses is astounding. By the end of the season the best teams always have good GF/GA ratios, and it’s not even close.
