Mirtle has a parrot on KK
More of the same. Anderson is standing on his head and won't keep it up. The team is too young and lacks talent. Yada yada yada.

More of the same “conventional wisdom” that everyone used to put them in 14th or 15th right?

let them all keep thinking that and underestimating us. It’s bulletin board fodder for the Avs dressing room.

The overall negative attitude seems really strange to me. I can see why Wings fans would want to downplay the Avs’ early success, by why everybody else? What difference does it make if the Avs cool down eventually or not? Why is it such a big deal?
I wonder why the reaction has been “they’ll implode any second now,” instead of “wow, this team is actually pretty good!” Would it kill everyone to acknowledge a good coach, a good system, a superb goalie and hard-working youngsters?
So what if they eventually cool off? They’re still good NOW.

yep, but acknowledging that would mean acknowledging that they were WRONG to begin with, and good luck getting the experts (or opposing fans) to do that.

Wing fans aren’t downplaying anything. We’re in no position, right now, to scoff at any team. At the moment, we’re much more concerned with how our own team is playing.

Perhaps the reason many people make similar conclusions about Colorado is because those conclusions appear to be the most logical explanation for current events.
I will go on record that my pre-season prediction for Colorado (14th in the west) puts them below what I expect today is their likely finish. That said, I bet its closer to their final finish than their current position in the standings – significantly closer.

We’ll see, I suppose. I think they’ve got a chance, a serious chance, at a playoff spot. But like I said, we’ll see.

I can say without hesitation that no one at MHH believes the Avs will end the year at 1st..or really, even very close to it. But a playoff spot is now in our minds. I don’t think that is unreasonable given the level of play we have seen and not just from Anderson.

Why? I haven’t seen anyone explain why it’s more likely they will be lower than 7th than better than 7th.

Black Swan, Unknown Unknown.
Same reason the world economy is fucked.
No matter how often they tell us that “past performance is not indicative of future results”, that’s exactly what they bet on. On Wall Street and in that small portion of the MSM that addresses hockey. Same reason THN picks PIT to win the Cup again (not that they won’t, necessarily, but…)

I think you’ll find there are many, many parrots out there. Anyone with even a small statistical bent will write the exact same thing, regardless of what they predicted.
Obviously the preseason predictions were wrong — this team is far better than anyone said they’d be.

I think this is the acknowledgment Avs fans are looking for. There are certainly very reasonable reasons to think the Avs aren’t going to keep this pace up, but many are predicting that the Avs will fall back to 14th or 15th in the conference, or where everyone thought they’d be. It’s nice to hear that, yes, this is a significantly better team than last season.

I’m not sure why people are killing Mirtle and the naysayers, except that it’s sort of fun to do it and it’s a rally-around-the-team thing. Let’s be honest – where did most of us think the Avs would end up? I don’t know about 15th in the West, but I sure wasn’t thinking playoffs. Did the Roundtable call for predictions? It’s time to show our cards, too. It’s one thing to say that none of us picked the Avs 1st or 2nd, but it’s quite another to say “I picked them to make the playoffs.” Who here said that? If you did, speak up and get your (still premature) congratulations.
What the doubters haven’t seen is every minute of every game like we have. They haven’t seen the almost immediate change in the style of play that turned this team from a team that was no fun to watch last year into a team that’s actually a joy to watch. They skate hard and fast. They finish checks. They attack the puck when they don’t have it and actually cause turnovers. Instead of making Lappy and Cody Mc and Stewart do all the fighting for them, they have team toughness, sticking up for one another when they didn’t do that so much in the past. It’s fun to watch young guys who don’t know or don’t care that they’re not supposed to be so good – O’Reilly is their best rookie so far, and he seems clueless that he shouldn’t be winning most of his faceoffs and playing big minutes on the PK and causing turnovers in the neutral zone that lead to goals.
It’s fun to watch because there’s a big sense of “who the hell are these guys?” The new guys are a breath of fresh air, and some veterans have been rejuvenated – especially Scott Hannan, in his new role as a 1 or 2 defenseman who’s actually been close to worth $4.5/year. Darcy Tucker’s looked like a new man, Cumiskey’s playing much better and providing the sort of threat we haven’t had since JML’s early days, and even Brian Willsie has contributed the past couple of games.
I get the “smoke and mirrors” thing because, quite frankly, we haven’t been dominating most of the games (although we’ve always been competitive.) For me, there have been a lot of “how the fuck did that point blank shot not go in?” “Look, Andy just saved a sure goal with his noggin!” and “What the hell is Darcy Tucker doing scoring a goal?” moments so far.
Whatever happens the rest of this season, I think this team will always be fun to watch, because they compete, no matter what. What a refresher to watch and know that you can be pleasantly surprised instead of knowing that the team is going to lose without really caring about it, as happened too often last season.
The early success means 22 points in the bank – can’t ever lose them, they’re not going anywhere. It’s a month ahead of when they did it last season, which is pretty amazing when you consider the turnover in personnel, the road games, and injuries.
I’m not ready to proclaim that we’ll make the playoffs quite yet, but even if we don’t, it seems like this team will be enjoyable to watch and will try hard, and that’s all we can ask for at this point.

I think the difference is that most of the “predictors” are still standing by those predictions and claiming that when the Avs fall off they will fall so badly that they’ll be back into that bottom pool. Most of us were hopefully, despite our worst fears that the team wasn’t going to be very good; after all there were/are a lot of intangibles. Most of us still think that the Avs will “cool off” to some degree, but we don’t believe they will hit a wall and stop (drop back to the bottom of the standings). It’s more like they will hit a wall and claw their way through it. Sure the wall will slow them down, but it won’t stop them. It also possible that while some guys “cool off” other will “heat up”. There is some real optimism that this team could be a playoff team…and the evidence is growing with every game they win, no matter how they win it.
As for Mirtle, he’s gotten a little more of the focus because he’s been willing to come in here and debate the topic. I think it’s been good for him and us. I also think he’s starting to come around a little….

Good post Dan. I’m with you on most points. This team is so far removed from last season’s suckfest it’s not even funny. I was definitely a doubter before the season started. I fully expected them to suck. I saw the loss of Smyth as a huge minus, wasn’t sure about Sacco, and didn’t even believe in my wildest dreams that O’Reilly, and to a lesser degree, Galiardi, would develop so fast. And I didn’t see Mr. fighting through defenders Wolski coming either. I did think Anderson was a great signing …. but didn’t see him as the second coming. So far, he has been.
I think the problem we have with the naysayers is their seeming stubborn refusal to acknowledge that they, too, could have been woefully wrong on early season predictions.
Hey Peter McNab, I'm starting to see sunshine and rainbows here.
