Same Old Avalanche

Watching the 3-2 loss tonight to the Predators was brutal. Even when the Avs were winning I saw things that made me think og last season and I just saw them ready to implode. Inability to clear the puck, laziness, and inconsistent offensive pressure led to a killer loss tonight. Unless Sacco can regenerate the troops we may see a few consecutive losses like this on the road trip. You try not to get to excited with the good start, because you know it wont last but nothing is worst then watching exactly what made you sick last season repeat once again. Come on boys learn from the mistakes!!!

definitely. i’ll take that kind of loss over the donut line losses last year.

True. . .

but it’s only game 3. Of 82. Not the Conference Finals. Not the Conference Semi-Finals. It’s game three. Of the regular season. All you bandwagon fans, take a breath. It’s a young team with decent veteran leadership that’s going to have to learn how to win. I heard a saying once that “old players get older, young players get better.” Stick with this team. Come February/March, my feeling is they’ll pull it together.

The fact of the matter is, this is still a bottom 5 team in year one of a rebuild with a veteran presence of about 2%. These kind of losses are going to happen…and quite a bit I would assume.

The best news to me, is that through 3 games, Craig Anderson is the steal of the century. Even with a horrid defensive effort last night…Anderson almost was able to save the team’s bacon. And the fact that the game only ended 3-2 is a credit to how good Anderson played.

The game could have easily ended in a 7 or 8 goal drubbing.

A big thing I want to see is Matt Duchene starting to “finish”. He almost looks like he is waiting too long to make his moves, getting in too close. That will change…the kid is only 18 for goodness sakes…

Salei sucks. There is no two ways around it. Clark has looked better in his two outings, and while most nights I would rather see him in the Press box…Clark should be in there over Salei.

Foote looks awfully slow, and Liles had an awful defensive night. A better game from those 3 (Salei, Foote, Liles) and the result may have been different.

I think the frustrating part was that the most experienced unit, the defense, was the biggest problem last night. They couldn’t clear the puck to save their lives.

Agreed

I saw a lot of mistakes by the guys that are supposed to know better.

i don’t think salei sucks. don’t forget the end of the 07-08 season and playoffs v the wild. i just don’t think he fits in this style of play. i still like salei, just not on this team.

Craig Anderson is the steal of the century.

Quincey’s right up there, too. What a freaking godsend he’s been. A whopper of a slap shot from the point. Oh, how I have missed that.

I saw tons of sloppy plays at both ends of the ice. The clearing issue seemed to get worse AFTER the Avs got the one-goal lead in the 3rd. They took their foot of the gas and instead of taking it to Nashville, they sat back and played to Nashville’s strengths, namely Weber’s shot from the point and the forward corp screening and banging in rebounds.

Duchene was the only one on his line doing top 6 things last night. The Highlander had a Highlander-esq night, but that isn’t a top 6 forward skill-set. Svatos was useless until Tucker gave him that gift in front of the net. We talk about Duchene needing to finish. Svats has the same disease so far in the young season.

Foote needs to take a cue from his last name and stay on his feet. Laying down in front of or beside the crease is not an effective defensive position. See last season.

Foote and Liles: in the future please utilize the sticks in your hands to lift the stick of the opposing player who’s standing next to you in front of the net so that he can’t bang in rebound with impunity. Hell, discuss it between the two of you and one of you do it. Just one.

Hendricks > Hensick. Salei was Rusty.

Duchene may be gripping the stick a little bit trying to get on the board. His goals will come, and I have a feeling once he gets NHL Goal #1 under his belt, they’ll come in a manner some would espouse as a ‘flood’.

i'll tell you one thing I didn't see that you mention

laziness.

and the one guy that didn’t work hard enough got benched (Wolski).

I suspect

Hensuck will laze his way back to the press box eventually. He just doesn’t hustle at all in his own end.

he sure wasn’t lazing last night though. If he keeps it up, welcome to the NHL.

I agree, I didn’t see laziness (but I was also chasing Toddler around for most of the 2nd). The 3rd was a little weird to me, because they seemed to have trouble getting it out of the zone, especially after the no-goal on Nashville. That really seemed to rally the Preds, and the Avs couldn’t seem to fight it. That and not getting that massive screen out of in front of Anderson led to the tying goal.

I also agree with previous guys. It’s the 3rd game. Relax. If you get too worked up now, you’ll never make it through the season.

game 1 and 2

Games 1 and 2 got my hopes up for the Avs, but still not for this season. But seeing Anderson + young talent out there doing well has made me feel better about the team’s chances in the next couple of years. Hopefully we can ship a D-man or two out of town soon for young players/prospects/draft picks.

Game 3 was more what I think we all expected for this year and seems likely to be more the par for the course, but I am still excited for the Avs of the future if not the present.

Not me. I honestly expected that 7-2 blow out each game. I’m thrilled it was such a close game. I think the young guys can learn how to keep pressing through a lead and their enthusiasm, again, will carry the vets to do the same. In a lot of ways, I think Duchene, O’Reilly, Hendricks, etc. will be teaching as much as learning.
