It's a light week for the Avalanche, with tonight's game being the weekday tilt. Hopefully, they can make it count. The Avs are coming off a sputtering loss to the Oilers on Sunday, a game in which they took roughly 270 penalties and gave up 67 power play goals. Those numbers may not be accurate, but it sure felt like a lot on this end. Maybe I should start keeping better notes...
I suppose you all read Craig Stancher's updates over at Ye Olde Official Website, but that won't stop me from cribbing them for my own personal use. Darcy Tucker is expected to return tonight and will likely skate on a line with (wait for it) Matt Duchene and Marek Svatos! Woohoo. Happy to have Tucker back, could have done without seeing this line reuinited though. If there's anyone who needs to be paired up right now with some skilled players, it's Matt Duchene. Heck, I wouldn't mind seeing him thrown on the left wing with Paul Stastny for a few games, just to give his game a boost. Milan Hejduk, who missed Sunday's game with a sore back, will probably play. If not, TJ Hensick skated in his place on the top line in practice Tuesday. [UPDATE: Not. Hejduk is out.]
Tom Preissing is back with the club after a two-game visit to Lake Erie. Joe Sacco has said he hasn't made up his mind yet as to whether it will be Preissing or Ryan Wilson. Personally, I think he has, but is trying to build suspense. Or something. Either way, Johnny Hot Pocket (aka Liles) did not make the trip to Chicago (if he's injured, who will model the new jerseys tomorrow?). Ruslan Salei practiced a bit, but he's still out.
The Blackhawks have some players returning from injury as well. Jonathon Toews has returned recently and Ben Eager was activated from IR on Monday. Here's their recent lines, courtesy of hockey centric. Get a good look at the Hawks tonight, as it's the last time we face them until the next-to-last game of the season.
It will be Craig Anderson for the Avalanche again. Cristobal Huet got the win on Monday, so figure him to get another shot under the Quenneville Goalie Rotation Carousel System (TM). Check Left Wing Lock during the day for updates. [Update: Huet is confirmed].
From the Good Thought But Kind Of Tacky Department, the Blackhawks will wear "historic" camoflauged jerseys during warmups. I will not be wearing anything similar in honor of Veterans Day (aka Armistace Day aka Rememberance Day), but do wish to express my most sincere gratitude to all of you who have served. As John Kelly would say, thank you, thank you, thank you!
Finally, Happy 37th Birthday to Steve Konowalchuk.
By the way, as I was typing this, Alan Parsons Project's "Sirius" came up randomly on my PC. Twice. Not really sure what my PC was trying to tell me. Despite being an absolute kick ass song, it's also curiously appropriate, as it's the song the Chicago Bulls used to play before games. I say "used to", but it's possible they still do; I haven't watched a basketball game in 36 years. Or so. Maybe it's less than that. Maybe I should start keeping better notes...

Just a friendly reminder that I will be tweeting live updates from the press box for this game (Yeah, I know Dater already does it, but he is “big time” and I am just a lowly suburban Chicago News/Sports Director…which makes me cooler…or something like that)
Follow along at: http://www.twitter.com/tuuk17
And I will have an audio wrap and the like sometime tomorrow (when my real job as Morning News Guy) is over.

The Duchene line issue is one thing that’s really frustrating me about Sacco. He seems to have a handle on so many player-performance issues, but he’s missing the boat completely with Duchene. If he’s not careful, Sacco will suck all the confidence out of the kid. Does anyone have a theory about why he’s not switching up that 2nd line?

Because the other lines seem to be working well and he doesn’t want to break them? I guess that’s all I can really think of…but you are right, that Number 9 needs some new linemates (And he needs to stop getting so far in before making moves on a goalie, he is an easy poke check on a breakaway)

MareK Svatos=Best Player Ever!
Ryan O'Reilly for the Calder.
by An Unmitigated Disaster on Nov 11, 2009 8:37 AM MST up reply actions 0 recs
In all seriousness, switch Jones and McLeod with Svatos and Tucker and you’d still have a decent 3rd line and give Duchene some decent players to pass to. And with O’Reilly’s ability to pass, and Svatos being garbage without someone to pass to him you’d think they’d at least try it.
But I would let Duchene play with Hedjuk before I did any of that, but I’m not the coach for some damn reason…
Ryan O'Reilly for the Calder.
by An Unmitigated Disaster on Nov 11, 2009 8:41 AM MST up reply actions 0 recs
It’s a tough spot for Sacco, I think. It’s expected of Duchene that he be our 2nd line center… but so far has he done anything to deserve it? O’Reilly has found a way to produce no matter who his linemates are, but the same can’t be said for Duchene. Duchene spends plenty of time with better linemates on the PP and in my opinion he still hasn’t shown that he knows what to do with them. Granted, I think I subconsciously hold Dutchy to a higher standard, but until he shows chemistry with those guys on PP, there’s no reason to mess with the 1st and 3rd lines when they seem to be working.
by centreice on Nov 11, 2009 10:15 AM MST up reply actions 0 recs
After spending some time thinking about Duchene’s situation over the past couple games, I’m not convinced that Sacco is doing him wrong putting him with the linemates he’s got. If Dutchy is truly going to be a finisher rather than playmaker on this team, he’s going to have to learn one way or another how to simplify his game and shoot earlier.
He’s got the moves, but at this point in the season, the opposition knows that instead of trying to knock him off the puck, they’re better off forcing him to the boards deep in the zone. If Duchene can just realize that pushing his way through the middle and shooting before he’s in poke check range of the goalie, he’s going to make goals with more consistency. Even when Matt gets fed the puck, he still gets too close to the goalie before he shoots. This is a lesson he’s going to have to learn on his own.
He’ll be fine, and he’s still got almost 75% of the season to find his game. Look at how Stamkos struggled early in the season last year and finished strong. The pressure’s just higher on Duchene right now because the team is doing unexpectedly well, and now we rightfully want production from our undisputed 2nd line center.

Yeah, I’m with you. Duchene is so good it’s tough to heap all the blame on sub-par linemates. O’Reilly has been more consistent with a similar revolving door of guys (the second and third lines exchange personnel all the time). The main problem Duchene has faced this season is himself. He’s gripping the stick too tight, he’s forcing himself too deep in the zone, he’s either shooting too early or too late.
He’s 18 with a ton of pressure on his back. But he’s got skill dripping from him, and he’ll be fine.

I not Hot Pocket, we do have that other eligible bachelor in Wolski that seems to have the Denver socialites in awe.
Then again Beachie seems to have this thing for O’Reilly, seeing him modeling the new jersey, might get her hot and bothered. ;)

also worth knowing that I prep these at night while there are still games going. so, when I put this together the Avs still were tied for 1th with San Jose.

I saw him do some great things in training camp, but the kid is just terribly inconsistent. He amazes me one moment [Hensiiick], and then totally blows it the next moment [Hensuck]. He tore it up in the AHL under Sacco last year. He does have talent, and maybe he just needs a little nudge over the edge.
Tonight could be a major test for him. Give him the best linemates possible and see what happens. Time to shit or get off the pot.

I’ve never been a fan of wings with the amount of breading hooters uses.
I prefer a place on the south side of the metro area called Wingin’ It (county line and quebec). Leaner Wings (I think even the BWW ones are kind of fatty), and kick ass sauce.

I’m not a hooters fan either but not because of the girls…well, not entirely. All the ones I’ve ever gone to seem a bit on the dirty (and by dirty I mean dirt) side and the girls aren’t ever really that cute. And those outfits…well, they just suck. Oh and then there’s the fact that I applied to one back in my 20s when I was smokin hot and they said they couldn’t hire me – even tho I was totally qualified – because of my hair. Apparently guys don’t like long, curly hair (similar in manner to Keri Russel’s). Pfffft. They are lame.

FAQ on website -
“Are you the same company as BW-3?
Yes, when we opened our first location in 1982, our original name was Buffalo Wild Wings & Weck – thus the BW-3.
We’re sure this poses another question? What the Heck is a Weck?? A Weck is short for kimmelweck, a Kaiser roll seasoned with special toppings. These tasty rolls are popular on the East Coast and were served at our restaurants when we first opened. In 1998, we officially changed our name to Buffalo Wild Wings Grill & Bar to better describe our restaurants."

I think that Liles will go back on the IR...
Darcy Tucker is back from injury and Tom Preissing was recalled after his conditioning stint, which means that they are both on the active roster.
I have not heard any word of either Ryan Wilson or Philippe Dupuis being sent back down. So, I am assuming that they are both still on the active roster.
Milan Hejduk and John-Michael Liles are listed as day-to-day. Which would indicate that they are both still on the active roster, giving the Avs 24 players. (T.J. Galiardi is skating on his own. But, still on the IR). But, Hejduk travelled with the team while Liles did not. So, Liles was not even a possibility to play while Hejduk was up until this morning.
And when Budaj was listed as day-to-day with the swine flu, the Avs still had to go with a 23 man roster even though he was not travelling with the team. So, something’s got to give somewhere.
I think that Liles is placed on IR retroactively and another roster move is made before Saturday’s game. A player has to be on the IR for a minimum of 7 days. Liles was injured last Friday. So, if the team places him on the IR retroactive to this past Saturday, he could be back for this Saturday’s game vs. the Canucks.

Lines to look something like this?
You know, at least to start the game.
Wolski – Stastny – Hensick
Tucker – Duchene – Svatos
McLeod – O’Reilly – Jones
Koci – Hendricks – Stewart
extras: Dupuis, Hejduk (day-to-day)
IR: Galiardi
Quincey – Hannan
Cumiskey – Foote
Wilson – Clark
extras: Preissing, Liles (day-to-day? IR?)
IR: Salei
Anderson
Budaj

That’ll probably happen. But, Hensick skated there according to Dater.
T.J. Hensick skated at Hejduk’s spot, on the top line with Stastny. Not sure if I agree with that move, but we’ll see if it sticks tomorrow.
http://blogs.denverpost.com/avs/2009/11/10/hejduk-doesnt-skate-tucker-back-tomorrow/
Although, you’re right in that Jones had been skating on the top line. That comment could’ve meant that Hensick was skating with Stastny and Jones.
I’m sure that the lines will be mixed up throughout the night, though. I just wanted to throw something down to illustrate the point that I was making in my previous post.

Speaking of our power play, maybe someone that saw last game could tell me: What did our power play look like last game? Hejduk spent some time playing the point when Liles was out with injury last time. But, with both of them injured, who is playing the other point along with Quincey? Wolski? Duchene? Did they use another defenseman like Clark or Cumiskey?
I’d also like to see the team using more of Jones and O’Reilly on the power play, probably as a solid second unit. With both of them scoring at even strength and short handed, they should get the opportunity to play on the man advantage.

You are allowed to actually put any one of your designated players next to the goalie. In fact, the NHL would like to firmly remind you, as a Blackhawk, that the crease is for you and the opposing goalie in infringing on your territory.

A note on the Hawks lines..
Just a friendly heads up from SCH.. the lines you’ve linked to aren’t really quite up to date. Here’s what the official Hawks site said is the projected line-up:
Byfuglien – Toews – Sharp
Versteeg – Madden – Kane
Ladd – Ebbett- Brouwer
Kopecky – Fraser – Eager
Keith – Seabrook
Campbell – Hjalmarsson
Sopel- Barker

After I’ve read it about a billion times, I finally have to ask! What exactly is a unipron? I mean, I know it refers to the Avs’s jerseys. But what exactly is it? I’ve been searching a number of internet dictionaries, but haven’t found anything so far …

the unipron combines the uncanny resemblance of the avs jersey with an apron with the word ‘uniform’

Unipron is used only by us to describe the Avs sweaters. Before my time, someone around here said they look like Aprons with the tubing down the body. Then the terms Uniforms and Aprons were mashed together to become Unipron.

scares the hell outta me. Duchene has been struggling knock him up to the royal line with the Baron and SoS and put Stewart on the line with Tucker/Svatos. Hensick stays on 4th line all is well. If lines stay Baron-SoS-Hensuck im expecting little offensive power.
