Game 19 Recap: Blackhawks 3 - Avalance 2 (SO)

Of course it was going to a shootout.

Man, I wish we could play the Blackhawks 82 times a year, as the three matches between the clubs so far have been dandies. Tonight's game was a lot of fun to watch. Craig Anderson is a freaking monster. Matt Duchene was marvelous (and, still scoreless). Kyle Cumiskey learned that he doesn't need to think before shooting (but then forgot later on in the game). The Avs' powerplay still needs work, but at least they stayed out of the box tonight.

I would have loved to see more than 3 shots in the 3rd period, however. I also would have loved to see someone other than Darcy Tucker take that 3rd shootout try. I still would like to see better linemates for Duchene (how about TJ Hensick, who is playing very well). And I certainly could have done without the Altitude graphics person misspelling the word "Sargeant"...especially on freaking Veteran's Day. But, you can't have it all. The game was exciting, the Avs got a point. I'm moderately happy.

Cutting this short to again try for a game of mini golf. Kudos on breaking a thousand in tonight's game thread. You guys rock.

Oh, and our favorite Chicago radio personality - chiavsfan - was covering the game. Here's his terrific radio recap.

Good game but could have been better. A win would have been nice and three fewer post (two by Duchene and Wolski’s in the SO) could have helped. Still, unlike last season’s team, the Avs got the game into extra time despite getting out played in the third.

One thing looking a little scary is that the Flamers are three games back but only 4pts. If the Flamers win two of those they are tied with the Avs…

The flames being close

doesn’t scare me. I’m just glad we are in a battle for the division lead. Really, it’s not as if I expected this. I don’t feel the way I did when our division leading streak came to an end. I’m just stoked we are this good so far. If we ended up 2nd or even a close third in division I think the avs will have overachieved.

At this point I’m sure we’d all be fine with 2nd place in the division.

I wouldnt say ‘overachieving’, but it would definately be surprising based on what we thought we had in store earlier in the year. You weren’t alone, many of us here consider the start we have had to be fantastic.

by UZ on Nov 11, 2009 10:28 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Am I the only one who feels like the shootout would be much more gimmicky and exciting if it went 5 rounds instead of 3? It seems like I remember this being a topic of discussion with GM’s a couple years back and it was shot down right away. Why? One argument against the shootout is that it takes the team out of the game… but the more rounds you add, the more the team is back in it, yes?

by centreice on Nov 12, 2009 9:53 AM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Much easier than the first time I was up there…once you do it once, you figure things out. Obviously this recap was much better, longer, and more audio filled than my first effort (Hawks/Preds).

They tapped me for the Hawks/Sharks on Sunday as well, so I must be doing something right.

I must admit though, that I did do a bit of silent cheering from the press box, and I was a lot more jittery watching this game than I was the Preds/Hawks game

Bubblegum brought it on himself. He called me out after I made a rather benign comment in reply to his a few days back. I questioned the intelligence of making such a move, but he quickly squashed my concern for him by two simple words: bring it. So I did, without mercy, and will continue to do so when he gets back (or maybe even while he is gone!)

Sacco got the Hjalmarsson as some point in the 3rd period and that caused him to put Tucker 3rd. Sometimes when you have the Hjalmarsson you hallucinate. I’m pretty sure that is the only plausible solution.

Duchene had a great game

I can’t believe that inside of the post shot didn’t go in, amazing.

O’Reilly had a bad game. He looked continually behind the play and slow.

Sucks that Quincey’s misplay was the game tying goal. I appreciate how aggressive our D is vs. last year’s and I don’t think it was a bad idea to try for the hold-in, but still, a bummer.

How about Kane’s shot on that first goal, good lord that was awesome.

I agree with DDC, Hensick played well last night — even on D. He looks worlds more comfortable as a RW.

I totally agree with Andy on this shootout issue

Win as a team; lose as a team. The points in these tie games matter when it comes to who goes to the playoffs. Sudden death overtime should be the deciding factor.

The fact that the league does not have them in the playoffs and that a goal scored in a shootout isn’t even considered legitimate enough to be counted for a hat trick in a game, speaks to how gimmicky the whole thing is.

Overtime with time limit?

Say, go 10 minutes and if they don’t score, then it’s a tie. No charity point if a team wins in overtime.

My perception is teams are looking for that charity point the last 4-5 minutes of the 3rd period, so they play conservatively. If they know they aren’ t getting it, they will probably take more risks.

This would also elimate those 3 point games.

Ties bug me waaaaayyy less than a loss in a shootout. Just sayin’

I for one like the shootout, but I hate the overtime point. Winner gets points period. If they got rid of that OT point, then the x-x-x score thing would be fixed too. It’s wins and losses, not wins, overtime wins, shootout wins, etc.

But that’s just me.

by Mrs @ MHH on Nov 12, 2009 1:06 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

What I hate about it

is the team works its ass off through 3 periods and OT, and then it comes down to the goalie and some shooters.

Don’t get me wrong: highly, highly entertaining and nerve- wracking, but weird way to decide a win.

It’s funny how much more I supported the shootout last season, when “shootout” was just another way to say “Avs get 2 points!”

by centreice on Nov 12, 2009 1:16 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

I’d like to see the regulation wins weighted more in the standings.

3 points for a regulation win
2 points for an OT/shootout win
1 point for an OT/shootout loss

Teams should not be awarded the same for being better at a bastardized version of the game.
I love the shootout, but there’s no way I consider it a legitimate way to determine a win or loss.

I agree. I can already HEAR the praise from McNab when the Avs have a 130 point season in the new system…

by centreice on Nov 12, 2009 1:49 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

This seems to be getting more and more support.
I hate the idea of a team making it to the OT/SO and then getting nothing; only because of the system that used to be with the ties. At least this way you still make winning in regulation a valuable thing.
Winning it OT/SO is still important but not as much as in regulation…the losing team is actually stealing a point, not just being awarded one out of thin air.

If they aren’t going to count a shootout goal, then they shouldn’t count a penalty shot goal. A goal is a goal.

by hockeymom on Nov 12, 2009 11:49 AM MST up reply actions   0 recs

There is a difference, albeit a slight one.

Penalty shot is a rare occurrence based on a penalty that caused the player to not have a legitimate shot at scoring when said player had a one on one chance with the goalie. The penalty shot only recreates that chance.

The shoot out give three players a chance to score one on one with a goalie with out having had to create the chance in the first place.

Not too mention the question, do you count each goal scored (IE last season you would have had to increase Wolski’s goal totals by what 10 or more?), or just the game winner? Would those goals count towards the Calder race, the scoring race, the Rocket trophy, etc.

Yes, it is a team game, and shouldn’t be in charge of the individuals just for the sake of not having ties and not having regular season games go on for five hours. I agree!

But then I must disagree with my agreement, just because I was at the previous ‘Hawks game, and that was the first shootout I’d ever seen live, and darned if it wasn’t the most exciting friggin’ thing I’d ever been witness to.

I guess I will put shootouts, for me, under the title “secret, guilty pleasure”, although now that I just posted about it, I guess remove the “secret”.

If he plays weak in shoot-outs because he hates them he comes across as a petty, whiny person he doesn’t try at things he hates and thats pretty weak for a professional athlete, or anyone really. If he hates them because he’s not good at them then it shows him more as someone who hates things he’s not good at which is understandable. Thats just my take, and I’m aware it might be slightly confusing, thats just how I roll.

OK, hear me out. you’ve got your 10 points for a win, 2 points for a loss. you’ve got your bonus points for shorty goals, lose a point per double minor. Tie games go into “bonus rounds” 2 minutes long, alternating between 5v5, 4v4, 3v3, 6v6, goalie v goalie, and finally decided by a trump vote coming from the mother in law of the captain of whichever team is geographically farthest away from the game currently being played. point distributions in the “trump” case would be decided by the simple formula of p (points) = 5x^2 – 3y + zE-4, x being the “intensity factor” decided by the replay judges in Toronto, y being decided by the number of fights lost by each team in the season, and z is the average attendance of each team’s arena. BAM I just solved the NHL’s problems. All of them. Including the RBK jerseys

epic long post inc

most OT systems are competitively crap, or suffer from “changing the game”:

the NHL’s does not encompass the entire game, in fact, it’s a very tiny portion of it.
the NFL’s is weighted towards a coin flip winner to a ridiculous degree.
Soccer suffers the same issues as the NHL, though they at least do OT longer.
NCAA football has a limited portion of the game in their OT, albeit a far less limited portion compared to the NHL/Soccer.

2 work:

MLB’s extra innings for as long as it takes. This has the problem the NHL refuses to even dance towards: it causes the next game on the schedule to potentially be crap. a long extra innings bout can really screw up a team.

Basketball is in a unique position with how much scoring there is. They can continue the complete game in very small spurts and odds are on their side that they won’t have the MLB’s uber long game problem.

There’s really no point to me pointing out other sport’s OTs except that the NHL is far from alone in having issues. only the NBA is really exempt from them. I actually much prefer the NHL’s shootout to the NFL’s OT — at least there’s no competitive imbalance based on a coin toss. it’s still in the hands of the players, if only to some small degree.

The major problem the NHL has vs. other sports is how frequently games go to the SO. last year 282 games went to OT/SO (out of 1230). there’s really nothing to be done about how many games go to OT/SO, that’s inherent to the sport. basketball, MLB, football all have it easier in terms of their crap in OT being less magnified; all of their rates for going to OT are lower.

Anyways, of those 282, only 123 were resolved in OT. that’s 43.6%. THAT’S the unacceptable part. Everyone knows the SO is “less satisfying” or a “gimmick” to some degree, that it’s not the complete game of hockey. We need to limit the amount of games that go to the SO.

A large reason why so many games end in the SO is because of how short the OT period is. 5 min? that’s not even 10% of a normal game! other sports that want to cap how long games go do way more — NFL is 15 min (25%), soccer is 30 min (33%)!

I’m not a stats guy, but if we take project those stats to a 10 min OT period, that takes us to… 123 + (282-123) * 43.6% = ~68% of games ending before the shootout. and if we did 20 min, a full extra period and equating how long soccer games are extended percentage wise, that number jumps to almost 90%!

bottom line for me is that 4v4 OT needs to go much, much longer. then the SO becomes far less of an issue. and take away the OT charity point!

by thedoctor on Nov 12, 2009 1:51 PM MST up reply actions   1 recs

Agree

I think we both agreed that the NHL would do a ton better to go to a 10min OT (4vs4), and actually call penalties during it. Regardless of SOs or not.

I wonder if more games are going to OT/SO because teams are playing more conservative near the end of a tied game, knowing they’ll at least get a point? Therefore, I wonder if removing the loser point would help here?

bottom line for me is that 4v4 OT needs to go much, much longer. then the SO becomes far less of an issue. and take away the OT charity point!

Agree here totally. Actually, I’d go with a 10-minute 4-on-4 and if it is still tied, call it a tie and each team gets a point. Go back to every game being worth 2 points.

Just a quick point about the ‘soccer’. Mostly, it isn’t used. The draw is seen as a perfectly acceptable result, which in general it is.

The time issues (when a game kicks off at 7.45pm, you can’t play 120 mins + possible penalty shootout) coupled with the fatigue mean that extra time is not used in the league. It is only used in knock-out competitions, where there has to be a winner to progress to the next round. In fact, a draw in the FA cup means the game will actually be replayed (only once mind, then it goes to extra time).

I don’t really understand the North American dislike for the ‘tie’ or ‘draw’. If two teams are level then so be it, why does there have to be a winner at all? I’ve watched many matches end in draws, some have been among the best I have watched. A tie does not mean that the game has been dull.

One reason why the NHL OT can be shorter than that in soccer is that goals are far more common in hockey than soccer. GAA in the NHL must be around 3, perhaps a shade under. If my soccer team scores 3, I’m happy for the week. Though I do agree, 5 mins is a bit short. 10 would be more reasonable.

First off, lol.

But I don’t think you can view the result of a sporting contest as the be-all and end-all.

Sports don’t come into existence merely to generate a winner, they start off as games, and progress from there into competition. Granted, if there was never a winner, sport would be very tedious viewing. And in a knock-out competition, there evidently needs to be a result.

But… let’s not forget the long-term. What gives better satisfaction, a year long drive for the cup (2001 an excellent example) or an extra point for a team who hit less posts in the shootout?

Sport, to me, is about the contest between one team and the other, between one player and the next. That is where the excitement is generated. Flipping a coin 10 times to see who gets the most heads will generate a winner (you might need ‘OT flips’!) but it’s pretty dull viewing. On the other hand, seeing two teams go hard at each other for 60 mins, 80 mins, 90 mins (or 5 days in cricket!) gives that excitement, the subtle shifts in momentum and all of the other things that makes sport a fun thing to do/watch.

The desire and the fight to win gives the drama, the emotion, the passion. Not the win itself.

Obviously, there has to be the possibility of a win. But I don’t (personally at least) see why that means there must be no tie. It adds something extra if anything – can one team break the other down for that extra point or will they have to settle for just 1 etc etc. I think it would work better with a 3 point win, 1 point for a tie though. Gives a bit of extra emphasis on not just sitting back and taking the point.

Nothing makes baseball exciting. But I think you have to understand cricket to appreciate it. It’s all about the little battles, combining together over an extended period of time.

by pingu on Nov 12, 2009 4:05 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

I think the excitement is in the possibility of winning or losing. That’s why the Shootout is so anti-climactic: There’s no possibility of losing.

That’s why Penalty shots are 100x more exciting than the shootout, because you can actually lose.

The solution is to make 0 points for a shootout loss and 2 for a shootout win. But that would be ludicrous., and everyone knows it. And why is it ludicrous, because it’s not really a loss.

Say, go 10 minutes and if they don’t score, then it’s a tie. No charity point.

My perception is teams are looking for that charity point the last 4-5 minutes of the 3rd period, so they play conservatively. If they know they aren’ t getting it, they will probably take more risks.

What I posted above.

I agree with your statements BiB – longer overtime, no charity point.

Because that would make RBk do some work. it’s much easier to change colours than change design. When you’re a big corporation planning world domination one crappy jersey at a time you can’t waste seconds on pesky things like Jersey designs

The very first thing I thought was…. “better than the unipron”.

Yeah, it’s not very original, and seems a lot like our old thirds, which I couldn’t stand, but it’s soooo much better than the alternative.

Craig Andersen

Just my two cents but the Avs should have won this game 2-0. Although Andy has been the Rock of Gibraltar for the Avs so far this season, he gave up two goals in regulation he should have stopped. Why with a shooter so close did he decide to drop to one knee and open up the top shelf for Toews and Barker??? Duchene hit two post and Wolski wiffed on the shoot out when he faked the goalie out of position. Avs should have gotten two points from this gamewithout overtime or the shootout.
