Briere Cheap Shot on Hannan - A Poll
Let's first catalog the depth of the uncalled infraction:
- Well after the puck had left Hannan's stick.
- After play was dead due to the goal.
- Left his feet.
- Deliberate cross check to the neck/face.
- Resulted in an injury to Hannan.
Sounds like no penalty to me! As I've posted already, imo, it should have been a 5-minute major and a game misconduct. Add to the above facts that it wasn't the little prick's Briere's first offense, you would think a suspension would be in order. So here's a little unbiased poll.

then where does that leave me with the Wilson hit in the Vancouver game? He wasn’t suspended. I personally thought that was a bad hit.

I don’t think it was that dirty. It was less than 2 seconds after the shot, and Briere I think had to leave his feet like that just to get a decent hit on a guy that’s way bigger than him.

I jokingly did the last one cuz I liked the stoning idea. But really, I think he should have gotten the 5 min major and game misconduct, as Wilson should have too. One game suspension would be acceptable too (for both of them). Maybe 2. 4? way too many.

A few things
The way things currently work, 2 would probably be about right. If the league were serious about cleaning up the game, especially eliminating head shots, then 2 should be considered an absolute joke.
I honestly didn’t think the Wilson hit was as bad. At least it was more in the context of the game. What Briere did was about as gutless and cheap as they come.

I have to agree some what with BiB. Wilson’s hit was not that bad in the scheme of the game. The hit was made with the shoulder and was worse because of the head down of the receiving player. The leaving of his skates looked to me to be the result of momentum and not Wilson trying to go for the head. I do not believe that there was any intent on Wilson’s part to injury the Oiler player, That said, if the league had decided to give him a suspension, I would have been upset about it, but not overly.
In this case, Briere hit Hannan after the play was over. It was not in the context of the game. The only reason to cross check a guy in the head/neck after the play is because you are pissed off and retaliating with the intent to hurt a guy. It was a cheap shot of the lowest form. He should have received a penalty during the game and should receive a suspension of at least 4 games. I don’t think he has a history, but if he does it should be longer.

The only reason I’d see fit to give Wilson a one-game suspension was the recklessness of it. No, he didn’t try to injure the guy. But he was doing what young guys do and got carried away.
Looking back at Briere’s hit, I agree that it is definitely a suspendable hit. I still think 2 games is sufficient tho. Although the hit came after the goal and he definitely had time to stop, it was still only a few seconds later. Had it been 10 seconds, I’d be more inclined to do a 5-gamer.

Did anyone see Mark Rycroft after the game?
He was hilarious. He said, “This is what upsets me. I can’t stand it when a little rat guy like Briere makes a dirty hit like this.”
And a jump cross-check to the head is 5 games, in my mind. Wilson should have gotten 3. At least his hit was in the context of the game. The “little rat guy” waited until well after the play was over, and he used his stick.

There’s no place for cheap shit like that in the game. I always knew Briere was a little bitch, but never realized he was a cheap and dirty little bitch.
This is the NHL, not the WWF. If the league cares about its players, they need to start making examples of these things. There was definite intent to injure, and with a flying cross-check like that, he coulda killed Hannan. 2 games is not enough, the amount of money he would lose is pocket change compared to his multi-million dollar contract.

Its kinda crappy, but you can see the goal had alrady gone in (Emery is looking behind him), LRG (Little Rat Guy) has his stick in Hannan’s face, LRG has started to leave the ice.

The only issue I have
is that in the nhl.com’s replay I only really see one skate come up. I know altitude played a replay during the game that made it more obvious, but unless there is a clear indication that both feet left the ice “prior” to stick on neck contact, there won’t be a suspension. Hopefully we can find another angle.
However, while writing this i noticed something else. If you watch the play, once LRG comes into your screen, Hannan is about to fire. LRG never looks at the net. Part of the NHL’s supposed standard is hits in the course of play. Since LRG is oblivious to the play going on, he seems to be focused just on going after Hannan. Unlike Wilson’s hit, like was posted above, LRG’s obliviousness to the play might help getting him suspended.

Disagree. Injuries are chance things. They aren’t even necessarily related to how dangerous the hit was. The point of deterring the behavior is that it’s always dangerous and any time someone could be hurt. Incentives don’t work when they are so strongly influenced by chance. Suspending guys for the entire time another player is hurt is just punishing based on luck.

I agree
Which is why I said it is a good IDEA. In reality I think there is just too much prohibiting it from being fairly used. One of the things that has come up when I have discussed it before is that it could only be invoked with an “intent to injure” call associated with it, and those are rarely called so it would not be used much. I think really it just applies to the whole justice seeking side of me. On rational examination, I just don’t think it can work, which does not make me think it can’t be a great idea in principle.

I've never liked this idea...
simply because the severity of injuries caused by suspendible actions seems to basically be random. look at the following hits:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QYBeyoK5YAg
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZeWFsKPNw9Q&feature=related
if you ignore the injuries that resulted from each hit, which one is worse? in my opinion, it’s clearly the one on stastny; veilleux clearly has time to see stastny’s numbers, yet proceeds with his hit anyways and even jumps into the hit. jones, on the other hand, was making a hockey play. yes, he should have let up, but how many times in a game do you see defensemen shoving forecheckers into the boards “from behind?” it happens all the time, and it’s a safe play if the forechecker is standing straight and is braced for a hit (which they should be).
so should jones have been suspended for a year while bergeron was out simply because of a hockey play gone wrong? and veilleux should be let off the hook because stastny wasn’t hurt in the hit?
i don’t think that’d be right. suspensions should be based on intent and the context in which they occur. if it’s a hockey play gone wrong (e.g. the Wilson on Moreau hit), then that should be taken into account. but the severity of the injury should not affect the severity of the suspension. otherwise, the message suspensions send is that extremely dangerous plays like veilleux’s are okay if the other player doesn’t gets hurt. the message that SHOULD be sent is that regardless of the outcome, it’s not okay to run somebody from behind, or elbow somebody in the head, or whatever.
the idea should be to prevent all plays like that, not just the ones that result in injury.
by ExiledAmongYou on Nov 24, 2009 4:41 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
i see what you're saying
certainly if causing an injury was the ONLY criteria for a suspension, that would be silly. but, actions should has consequences based on the results to some degree as well. Take our legal system, do we prosecute people for murder when they try to kill someone and fail? no, that’s attempted murder, a (slightly) lesser charge.
I think setting a base suspension level on a per case basis, 2 games in this case, is a good start, then that gets extended to whatever the the player you injured ends up sitting out.
as TheRed says, this would need heavy policing to make sure it’s not abused. But I think it’s a much better deterrent than the current system.
