Hensick waived

First time poster, but I swing by the site often. Great stuff here, figured I'd add to it.
TJ has been waived by the Avs.

Reported by Bob Mckenzie of TSN:

https://twitter.com/tsnbobmckenzie

I'm a bit surprised. I thought he seemed to have picked it up a bit. Didn't get much of a shot this year. At the very least, it seems like the Avs have got some offensive depth if they're willing to risk losing him.

well...

we have a lot of depth, no comment on the quality of that depth, but a lot of guys around a similar skill level at the bottom.

I can’t say that I thought TJ was playing poorly. Hopefully he’ll clear waivers.

Welcome!

I am actually surprised they put him on waivers. I figured he’d be part of a package trade deal. What’s the advantage of waivers? Cap space?

That’s what I thought would happen too. I figured they would throw him in to sweeten the pot with one of the high earning defenseman.

I think the purpose is just to send him back down to Erie and he doesn’t have a two-way contract? I don’t think it’s a case of trying to get rid of him outright.

Avs probably want to send him down but can’t. If he clears he will go to Lake Erie.

Never trust the lunch lady.

i have a hard time seeing him clear, with teams like NYR, toronto, and carolina dying for a top 6 center.

by thedoctor on Nov 25, 2009 11:11 AM MST up reply actions

Agreed. Saving 600 grand seems to be more important than having Hensick right now.

Never trust the lunch lady.

he won’t clear. and honestly, i hope he finds a team that needs him and that he can help. i’d rather see him in the NHL on another team than down in Erie. he’s a good kid and still has some of that Hensiiiiic left in him.

I hate seeing guys with some skill just get lost in the team.

But still, it sucks losing him for nothing. But oh well.

Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

by Aph on Nov 25, 2009 11:34 AM MST up reply actions

Nope, we should’ve landed a 2nd rounder for him. We’re still in rebuilding mode and shouldn’t give away freebies.

If this bites us in the ass, which I’m pretty sure it will, I’m gonna ask Joe to change my name to OHNOHZHEAREALWAYSRIGHTLIEKAPROFET

by Tommelot on Nov 25, 2009 12:17 PM MST up reply actions

I think we would have been pretty hard pressed to get a 2nd rounder for just TJ. I would have been happy with a 4th or even 5th.

I liked the idea of packaging him in a deal best.

Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

by Aph on Nov 25, 2009 12:47 PM MST up reply actions

Agree on packaging him… I think he could have been the piece to tip a pot in our favor. Maybe Sacco and Sherm are looking at our pool of kids in Lake Erie and see enough potential that we won’t have to make a trade.

I would assume that they are planning on moving our veteran Dmen at the trade deadline for more picks, and they don’t plan on trading for another big-name player. Wave goodbye to Rusty, Svats, and Clark, while replace them with some of the kids. Peltier, Stoa, and… whom else? maybe they think Priessing will get it together. I dunno. But we do have some talent, and they think those guys will be ready for the big game without a trade.

Thanks Joe...

How do we know they didn’t attempt to trade him? There has to be a willing buyer in order for a trade to happen. If they did try and failed, they aren’t going to advertise that fact. I really think fans just assume making trades in the NHL is like selling stocks on wall street, just call up your broker and get the going rate. If it was that easy, a few of our players would have been gone by now. I’m sure most teams have a few players with talent levels close to Hensick’s, so I think there’s a decent chance he’ll clear.

Hoped he’d keep on playing with the big boys. I’d take him over Koci any day.

by Tommelot on Nov 25, 2009 12:14 PM MST reply actions

With what Koci has been allowed to do so far this season, I have to agree with this. At least Hensick can play more than 3:00 per game.

Koci probably COULD play more than 3:00, he’s just not allowed to.

Maybe the Avs are hoping that being the Thanksgiving weekend, a lot of teams won’t notice he’s been waived?
