Around SBN: Tiger Woods Makes His 2012 PGA Tour Debut

Peter Forsberg.

Peter Forsberg is going to be talked about, so we may as well get this discussion going now.  According to sources, Forsberg is gearing up for one last attempt at an NHL comeback.  Clearly the Avalanche are in a position they didn't expect to be in (nor did anyone else).  When Forsberg rumors first surfaced back before the season started, it was speculated that he wouldn't be interested in joining a club that was supposed to be fighting to finish 13th in the conference.

Now, things have changed a bit.

So...what do you do about Peter Forsberg if you're the Colorado Avalanche GM?

Let him play on a per game contract. Sorry peter, you’re my favorite player ever, but we just can’t spend money on someone who will be injured more often than not.

That being said, nothing would make me happier than to see him retire an Av.

We have the cap room

For even a max contract, pro-rated of course.

But is there any indication the Avs are genuinely interested?

by eltharion_doa on Nov 5, 2009 5:54 PM MST reply actions

According to Puck Daddy:

Bob Hartley has told RDS that Peter Forsberg(notes) has agreed with Ak Bars Kazan of the KHL. That’s a quick turnaround after what Ak Bars Kazan VP Ravil Shavaleev said about Russian reports yesterday that Forsberg was signed: "I read that we have supposedly agreed with Forsberg. However, we have conducted no negotiations with him, and I’ll tell you more: We haven’t even thought about inviting him."

by chiavsfan on Nov 5, 2009 6:08 PM MST reply actions

Call me crazy, but I don’t think signing Forsberg is a great idea for the team. I think, and this is all my opinion, one of the reasons this young team is off to such a great start is because all of them have a sense that they must contribute in some way for their team to win. There are no real superstars on this team that others would defer to to take over a game. But once you bring in a guy like Forsberg, everyone will, consciously or not, look to him to win games for them. Now if Forsberg stays healthy all season and play every game, he may very well win lots of games for us and all’s swell. But really, how likely’s that going to happen? And once he goes down for a long stretch, I’m not sure the team can handle the let-down, not with so many young players.

This could very well be me way overthinking stuff like “team dynamics,” and Peter will make me look like a fool. If that’s the case I’ll be thrilled. I know there are very good marketing reasons for signing him, with the attendance last night and all that. But I’m just not convinced the rest of the team will play at the same level of intensity if we sign someone as big as Forsberg.

I spent more effort eating a pudding than Tyler Arnason did last year.

Interesting point. But on the flip side, if you bring him in when the team has really established its identity—say around January—it could just add to the chemistry. It could also push others on the team to be even better.

The reason Forsberg has not received any mention at all on the front page is because I loathe speculation. I hate it. Until Forsberg signs a contract with a team, he won’t appear on the front page of MHH.

I hate that everybody keeps getting their hopes up that he’ll return and magically lead the Avs to another Cup somehow. If past experience is any indication, his return would be impressive but short-lived, with multiple injuries and time lost in the press box. Forsberg has been a medical liability for years, and the fact that teams would even entertain his ill-advised attempts to return to the NHL suggests several GMs in the league could use a class on fiscal responsibility.

I don’t see speculating about Forsberg and what he could do with the team as any different than speculating about trading Svats and Clark and Salei and whomever and wondering what we could get in return and how that would affect the team. The big difference with Forsberg is that we know intimately about his play, work ethics, his effect on the fans, his effect on a team, etc. Thus, we have more to speculate about with him. I agree it’s not front page stuff, but I don’t think it’s out of the realm of subject matter. Besides, I like the tingly feeling I get when imagining Foppa winging on Dutchie’s line. I like tingly feelings like that. (Run with it, Canary. lol)

Actually if you include the “…” he explains it pretty sufficiently. It’s like the Brett Favre debacle, too much is being made of his every move. I didn’t see him banning anyone for Forsberg speculation, just choosing to explain why he doesn’t like it and why he doesn’t take part in the discussion.

OK, you're right.

My comparison to previews was overly hyperbolic. I’ll humbly retract that. But to suggest that speculation is non-existent here is just silly. And to loathe speculation in general is even sillier.
Has anyone suggested that Forsberg would “magically lead the Avs to another Cup somehow”? No. Joe hates a strawman.

by Jibblescribbits on Nov 6, 2009 12:55 PM MST up reply actions

But is that a good reason to despise all speculation surrounding a comeback? The main sentiment I’m seeing is basically “He would make us better” or “I’d love to see him skate again”. That’s a long way from “Guaranteed Cup. YAY!”

Gimme a grape or an orange, but none of that stinkin' root beer!

by Nominal Egg on Nov 6, 2009 1:08 PM MST up reply actions

And he just stated that he, essentially, says it’s much ado about nothing until he signs on the dotted line (I agree with him).

And I’m annoyed by the sentiment too because I think it distracts from the good team that’s already out there, and that some fans, like the Org itself, are having a hard time getting over the past. Sure, I’d love to see Forsberg back, and he’d make this team a lot better, but for the last 5 years there’s been a ton of speculation and a handful of games. I’ll wait until something happens, I’m tried of the speculation

Not saying you have to agree with that, but it’s a perfectly reasonable attitude to have and in no way does that warrant this

You don’t hate speculation, you just hate Forsberg.

Especially since Joe has written this about Forsberg:

The speed. The finesse. The energy. The ferocity. The physicality. The intensity. The focus. The stare. The raw, unbelievable talent. An entire book could be written on each one of these characteristics, all possessed by one Swedish hockey player, who, year after year, gave fans of the Colorado Avalanche more than just a little hope for success. He gave them all a swagger. Peter Forsberg gave fans of the Avs a kind of confidence and security that only two other players have ever given them, and those players are two of the greatest in history.

Despite the injuries caused by his style of play, Foppa never once played lazy, never once held back, never once eased up. His very presence on the ice made every single player around him better. Very few other players in history can be said to have done that. Gretzky. Lemieux. Dionne. Messier. Bourque. Sakic. Some of the greatest names in the game, and Forsberg is securely placed among them. He’s also securely placed in the top 3 of the Top 19 Avalanche Players of All Time.

Foppa on FP
Until Forsberg signs a contract with a team, he won’t appear on the front page of MHH

What if he would retire?

He hasn’t retired?

On a serious note, yes. If he officially retired, he would of course appear on the front page of MHH.

Good for the team

If the Avs continue to be in the top half of the western conference, signing Forsberg for the rest of the year seems like a no-brainer. We have the cap space, it wouldn’t mortgage the future at all, he would bring scoring depth, veteran leadership, put butts in seats, and the worst case where he just gets injured again just costs a bit of cap space which probably wouldn’t get used anyway. Not really knowing anything about the locker room dynamics of the team, the chemistry explanation doesn’t hold much water for me. I don’t think there’d be an expectation that he’d be the frosberg of old and be the undisputed top dog on the team or require any special deference from the youngsters.

Rangers...

Rangers are scouting Foppa and badly need a secondary scorer. For them its worth the risk they cant win when Gaborik is out of the lineup and its NY enought said.

that was my 1st arguement to when i heard they were scouting him...

something has to be up they wouldnt be scouting him for no reason. My thought…Vancouver is “seriously looking” @ Foppa i’d be surprised if Peter went there but maybe a sign and trade…

So...what do you do about Peter Forsberg if you're the Colorado Avalanche GM?

I would wait until after the Olympics, and then make him an offer (or not) depending on his performance there.

But then don’t you run the risk of age and injury catching up to him, leaving him unavailable when it matters most?

Bingo.

Use the Olympics as his litmus test.

I would love Forsberg back. With that said,

a. I know he would not have much of an impact on the team since he will probably only play maybe half the games, if were lucky.

I’m not going to hate him if he signs with another team or the KHL (Unless it was the Red Wings but that won’t happen).

c. Most importantly, this team is not dependent on Forsberg. Forsberg would be a nice extra weapon in the holster, but he is not the primary one. “If only we had Forsberg” is not my thoughts about this team and really, it shouldn’t be anybodies.

I’d like to see him finish his NHL career here. The thought of him finishing in another team’s sweater makes me want to puke.

What the hell

I say make him an offer (low offer) if he stays healthy then it is BRILLANT!!! if not it was a gamble. Don’t offer him 5 mil for one year that is just crazy.

Dater reports:

- KHL has dropped out of contention for Forsberg’s services (sorry Bob Hartley, you were WRONG)

- Vancouver Canucks scouting him heavily (where have we heard this before?)

From a completely different angle, do the avs have to sign him to put some fannys in the seats? I have my seats up on stubhub (I go when I don’t sell them) and it was dead for the first 2-3 weeks of the season and I’ve been selling more now, but if PF came back all the casual fans would flock back….you do see where I’m going with this right?

I love Peter

He is my favourite Avs player of all time (sorry Joe). However, unless he has a contract that only pays out per game played, it wouldn’t make a lot of sense to sign him up. His mind is willing but his body is paying the price for years of physical hockey.

Oh, never mind, it seems like MoDo might take him on this year. How old is he anyway?
