Jersey etiquette (non-"Jersey Shore")

So I think we are all pretty familiar with what a jersey foul is thanks to Puck Daddy.  But what I'm wondering lately is: WHERE and WHEN is it ok to wear my jersey?

Is it cool to wear it on any game day?  All day?

Non-game days?

Assuming it doesn't break the dress code at work, what about wearing my jersey to work?

Walking the dog?

Grocery shopping?

Mothers Day brunch?

I have and have had a lot of Avs t-shirts that I never thought twice about wearing anywhere, anytime. Cause I'm just that snappy of a dresser, yes indeed ladies!

But I have to admit that other than going to a game I feel kinda dorky wearing a jersey.  But I get kinda bummed that they don't get worn often enough or as much as I want to wear them.  So do I need to get over this or IS it dorky to wear your jersey anywhere other than a game?

What do YOU do?

When is ok?

When is not ok?

I have several personal jersey rules. Again, these apply to myself and I hold no one else to them.

1. No names on the back. I’m not on the team, so my own name is inappropriate, and I’m my own man, so no other man’s name goes on my back.

2. Jerseys are only worn outside of the house if I’m on my way to, at, or on my way home from an actual game.

3. Jerseys are only worn on game days.

These rules work pretty well for me.

Rule # 1 very interesting!

I don’t happen to have any of those nice game jerseys with, oh say, McLeod’s name on it cause they are so expensive. But I never thought of it the way:

no other man’s name goes on my back

But do you put a number on the back?

Nope. Not my name, not my number, either.

So you wear a jersey at home watching a game?

I’m an anywhere, anytime jersey wearer. I wear most of mine like coats or sweaters, and when I get to my destination, they come off like a coat or sweater. Hardly ever do I got through a whole day in one.

I also have jerseys that ONLY come out of the closet for games…some for use during roller/ice hockey…and others that are just for lazing around in

by chiavsfan on Dec 12, 2009 2:08 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

I’m in this group. I’ll wear them anywhere. I’m pretty sure I even took one on my honeymoon. I even have two with my own name (major jersey foul there), although most are blank.

I only really have one rule, and that’s that I wont wear the jersey of a team the Avs are playing that day. And no uniprons.

Does Driscoll go on one and Carignan go on the other? Or can you actually fit all of that on a jersey?

I wear mine anywhere, because being a fan never goes out of style!

Being a teacher I’ll wear a jersey to school on dress up days like “sports day” and things like that….

I wear mine around the house all the time….game day or not.
I used to wear one as a sweater on cold days, but two years ago my wife bought me a nice Avs stadium jacket…
I have worn Avs jersey’s to Las Vegas Wrangler’s games (ECHL), but I’ll probably be getting a Wrangler’s jersey pretty soon…maybe Billy Sauer?

I don’t have my name on any, and probably never will…

It’s very rare that you’ll see me out without some manner of sports jersey on, although my Avs one is probably my least worn one because of its bulk. If I get a Unipron for Christmas or something it will probably see more use than my old-style Foote jersey.

The only one with no name on it is my crappy knock-off bright purple Rockies jersey.

Otherwise, I put it on about 30 mins before puck-drop.

It doesn't really matter to me

I generally only wear them for games, but occasionally I’ll put on my nameless Avs sweater or throwback Karl Mecklenburg jersey. The “own name” should be illegal.

If we’re talking jersey fouls, I saw a guy on the bus from Wagon Road to the Broncos game a few weeks back wearing an authentic Jamie Winborn orange jersey. I started to feel bad that he’d dropped $240 on that puppy, but then I realized that anyone dumb enough to get a Jamie Winborn jersey deserves to be out at least $240.

Personally, I don’t understand why everyone knocks the jersey wearing crowd. If you like it, cool. But I’m also one of those single guys that takes a baseball glove to the ballpark.

I’ll wear a hockey jersey pretty much anywhere, restaurant, shopping, movies, disney themed 21st(Yeah, i rocked the mighty ducks jersey and it was awesome, I know how jealous you all are) and mostly when the Avs are on TV in Australia but lately I haven’t worn them much mainly because it’s Summer over here and my favourite one is hopefully somewhere in Tampa signed by Budaj.

I don’t see how wearing a hockey jersey in public is any different to wearing a football/basketball/soccer jersey in public. Who cares, If you support the team and want to wear it then wear one and who cares what everyone else thinks.

I’ll wear a jersey anywhere hockey is played. Not all the time, but normally.
I’ve been collecting them since about 1995 and I’ve got pretty close to a hundred, including one I got made with my own name but I don’t wear anymore. It was cool when I was 17, and still had aspirations of making it to the NHL, but ten years later it’s just kind of embarrassing.
Hockey jerseys are the best conversation starters ever!! I’ve had people all over North America come up to me and say ‘Wow, I love that jersey!" Usually it’s one of my Whalers, old-school Sabres, or Leafs, but hockey fans will seek me out and start conversations. Which is sweet cause I love to talk hockey, but I’m kinda shy.

When I first became a fan of the Avs I wanted to get an Avs jersey with my name and the #9, cause I thought (and still do) that Ricci was the shit. I guess cause I was playing rec hockey and managed to get that 9 I thought it was ok.
How bad would that be now with Duchene? Anyway, my GF who has a natural sense of jersey no-no’s harassed me enough that I didn’t do it.

by From the Point on Dec 13, 2009 9:08 AM MST reply actions   0 recs

Ok, I'll take this tread and up the questions a bit

I just got my first Avs Jersey. It’s an official road jersey (white) that I won at a charity auction for…..$80 (they sell for $200 normally). It’s a 26 Paul Stastny jersey. I don’t have much Av’s stuff. I tend to wear my Rockies jersey’s when I go to Rockies games, and thought it would be nice to get an Av’s jersey, plus the money went to a good cause.

Here’s the kicker: It’s signed by Stastny. Some friends said, there was no way I could wear the jersey cause it was signed and it would be a waste of signed memorabilia and I have to get it framed. BUT, I didn’t want a picture for my wall….I wanted a jersey, and I got it so dang cheap (comparatively) I thought by not wearing it, I would be wasting a perfectly good jersey.

So, can I wear my Stastny signed jersey? (oh, and thanks for starting this thread, I really wanted to ask this question)

absolutely. i wear my Hot Pocket signed jersey. i see tons of ppl wearing signed jerseys. if you don’t want/have room for a huge framed jersey on your wall, wear the thing!

I say it all depends on your personality. Why did you get the jersey?
1..Is it something you want to cherish (having been signed) and thus you want to keep it in mint condition?
2..is it a jersey, a piece of clothing, and the signature is just icing on the cake.
3..other?

If your answer is 1, frame it. If it’s 2 or 3, wear it and realize that somebody will probably spill a beer on you and ruin it, or you’ll wear it so much that it wear out.

Personally, I’d wear it…who cares if it could be worth a million dollars years down the road when I’ll be too old to enjoy the money, and my kids will end up with most of it.

or, you could ask yourself this:

could you easily get another one signed again?

 - yes, wear it.
 - no, frame it.

honestly, if i ever get my forsberg jersey signed, it’s getting framed. i don’t think JML will ever get his jersey in the rafters, so it’s not that big of a deal to frame it, though i am still debating the issue. that said, if anyone spilt beer on it, i’d kill him/her and would end up incarcerated so i guess it wouldn’t matter anyway.

Thanks all for the response

Really #2 here is the key for me. I wanted a jersey. I would have paid the $80 for a charity for a blank jersey. the fact that it had a signature on it was bonus.

The way I look at this , is if I can’t/shouldn’t wear the jersey cause of the signature, then having the signature would actually be a BAD thing, cause I want to have a jersey and to wear a jersey.

Now if I had a signed Foresberg jersey that would be different. I met him several time around Denver, and he was a heck of a nice guy. (funny of the years I’ve lived in Denver, I’ve met Av’s players out and around, but no Rockies, or Nuggets and only a few Broncos)

I’d get it framed, which is what I’m doing with my signed Budaj jersey when it gets back from Tampa, mainly because getting it signed again would be almost impossible but also because he’s my favourite current player and having his signed jersey would be awesome.

I have a few signed. One of them is more of a joke

1) Cory Pecker: He was an AHL player for the old Cincinnati Mighty Ducks, Manitoba Moose…etc. When I was at a Wolves/Moose playoff game in Chicago a few years back, Pecker got a penalty for “holding the stick” (The ultimate “that’s what she said”)…so I bought a Moose “Pecker” jersey, which he gladly signed. He plays over in the Swiss league now I believe.

2) Stephen Weiss old style white Florida jersey. I got that on an NHL auction

3) Chicago Wolves jersey: Signed by Jay Boumeester, Stephen Weiss, Joe Corvo, Kari Lehtonen, Brad Larsen and others during the lockout season.

4) Jonathan Toews jersey: The black style Hawks jersey, I got it signed earlier this year, he is friends with a friend of mine.

The Weiss and Toews ones I am going to get framed.

Also, I have a friend who is really good friends with Craig Anderson’s family, and he is supposedly getting it signed for me over the summer when Andy comes back to Illinois. Not sure what I am going to do with that one yet

Damn, I need to move to America

One of the guys who worked at the rink near my house when he was on holiday works for the Tampa Bay Lightning as an “Ice Technician” and he has the Cup ring from 2004 to prove it and he got the guy who works in the visiting change rooms to get Boods to sign it for me, So i sent it over and it got signed. I also asked him if he could get me a Mike Smith signed jersey so hopefully he does.

A friend of mine is the drummer for a band the Avs used a ton over the years for parties and weddings. One of the parties he played was their Christmas one…in 2001. He got to take a pic with the cup and Sakic and then got his jersey signed all at the same time. Talk about orgasmic.

the places i REFUSE to wear my avs jersey: to ducks or kings (or any other hockey team) games when they are NOT playing the avs. i absolutely HATE it when people wear jerseys of other teams to games when that team isn’t playing unless it’s an olympic team, all star team, or original team from which that franchise came. call me a purist, i guess, but i find it annoying. i’d forgive a college sweater if it seemed likely that it was that guy’s sweater from when he was in college i suppose, but…the rest, sucks.

I think the only time another “non-playing” team’s jersey is acceptable, is when the player on the back of said jersey is in the game. Say I was wearing a Havlat Hawks jersey at a Wild-Blues game (I don’t have have that jersey, nor have I ever been to a Wild-Blues game…just an example)

We went to a Habs game once cause we happened to be in town, who wouldn’t go to a game in Motreal? They were not playing the Avs but we wore Avs gear.
My GF wore her Avs-Abby jersey, I wore a blank one. But regardless of Abby, we would have worn our Avs gear even though the Avs weren’t playing. I think it’s a way of waving the flag for your team but at the same time saying, hey, we love hockey in general and we wanted to come into your house to see how you do it.
Since then, however, she has changed her mind about the acceptability of doing that.
Whenever I see someone at a game with a non sequitur jersey I just figure it’s a hardcore hockey fan.

My Rules

1. No players names – it’s tacky, makes people think you want to live vicariously through the player to make up for your athletic shortcomings.

2. No personalized jersey – as tempting as it sounds getting “Bertuzzi sucks” on the back of the jersey it’s just dumb, I expect a 4 year old to do that…plus, we all saw the main reason why no one should EVER get personalized one…

3. When in the town of your rival…WHERE IT EVERYWHERE. Especially if your team has the edge in the series, or just won an important game against them…I used to love doing this in Dallas.

4. For those of you who have 2 or more jerseys, designate one as the arena jersey, and the other as your any time. Please WEAR A SHIRT UNDERNEATH.*

5. For women, the second part of rule 4 is optional. There is nothing sexier than a woman in nothing but a hockey jersey.

Gotta agree with Beachie

I got a Budaj one because he’s my favourite player and a Sakic one before he retired because I knew it’d be raised to the rafters and I wanted to honour him. I don’t see how it’s tacky or anything, plus if someone thinks I got it because I want to be him then the person a douche canoe anyway.

What if the player has the same name as you? I was thinking of getting a Stewart 3rd jersey, since (a) I like the player, and (b) it’s my last name, and what most of my friends call me. It’s always kinda funny hearing it called out (“Stewart goes to the box for holding the stick…”). © Third jersey because it’s the only non-unipron you can buy.

My $0.02

The whole jersey etiquette thing is ridiculous. If you shell out $100 for a jersey, you should get something YOU want. Choosing a jersey because it follows a particular “etiquette” set forth my someone who posted something on the Internet seems childish to me.

The whole Puck Daddy jersey foul is the zenith of immaturity. These people sneak pictures of hockey jersey they don’t like (which in itself is creepy as hell) then run home and upload the pictures to their Internet friends to make fun of them. Grow up. This equates to little kids passing notes in class to poke fun at a classmate. At least the kids don’t know any better, have the balls to make friends outside the Internet and they aren’t weird sex offenders trying to sneak pictures of other people.
