They're not rookies; they're not vets; what the hell are they??

Okay, so the rookies are impressing the hell out of everyone because of their skill and poise at such a young age.  But I think we often forget that many of our "vets" aren't really vets at all.  They've just been around a few years so they seem like it.  Let's break it down a bit.

Player / Age / Current Year at Pro Level (in order from most to least)*

Paul Stastny / 23 / 4

Wojtek Wolski / 23 / 4

David Jones / 25 / 3

Cody McLeod / 22 / 3

Kyle Cumiskey / 22 / 3 (It's listed that he only played 6 games anywhere during the 2006-2007 season...not sure what that's about. DDC?)

Chris Stewart / 22 / 2

Kyle Quincey / 24 / 2

Now, our "true" veterans, oldest to youngest:

Foote - 38

Salei - 35

Hejduk - 33

Tucker - 34

Clark - 32

Hannan - 30

-------------------------------------

Liles - 29 (5th year in the NHL, given that his 2nd was the lock out year)

Anderson - 28

Koci - 28 (3rd year in NHL)

Svatos - 27 (5th year in NHL)

Budaj - 27 (3rd year in NHL)

Notice anything?  Half of our "veterans" are under 30 and 4 of them have 5 or fewer years in the NHL.  What would be considered middle of the road as far as age and experience on most teams are the "old guys" for our team.  I look at that "average age" stat and I think, "Yah, we have a lot of young guys."  But I look at this, and I think, "Wow.  Our go-to guys are freaking YOUNG.  SoS, Baron, Quincey, Jones, Stewart...they're still kids and have well over 10 years of huge hockey ahead of them.  I think that gets me as excited as all this rookie business does.

*I'm so not a stats person, so if I've gotten any of that number business wrong, please tell me and I'll fix it!
