The Caps are always a special game, my first ever NHL game was in 1987 at the Cap Center, Nordiques @ Caps.

Really? I don’t think I ever got to go to a game… I went to Canadiens but never a Nords game. I was born in ’84 so I was 10 (birthday is in December) when they left. First game (as far as I can remember) was Leafs vs Avs as a “You lived through” the heart surgery…

Actually when I was at the hospital some Leafs came in because they were told I was a fan… they asked me who my favorite player was and I said Adam Foote… one of the guys swore. I remember thinking even then that it was really funny.
Another player sat beside me and talked for awhile.

I find most people are nice as long as you treat them properly.
I met Dave Coulier (Full house) and people were rushing him, it was ridiculous. I felt so bad for him.
I met an old time Canadiens player when I was 10. We were in the mall and I walked up to him and introduced myself and asked if I could have a picture with him. He laughed, and agreed!

Me neither. I went to one of my favorite restaurants in Edmonton and Jason Smith and Ethan Morreau were eating there with their families (BTW Ethan and his wife are smoking hot IRL) and I mean sure I stole a glance or two but I wouldn’t approach them…

He’s the honored alum tonight (and, in a pretty amazing story, he’s still playing in the minors at age 42). My biggest Mike Keane memory is an early one, when he scored the OT goal against Detroit in the playoffs when it seemed like the Red Wings were invincible and absolutely couldn’t be beaten. Old people like me might remember that the Wings thrashed us late in regulation that season, and a lot of people thought the playoffs would be the same way. Keaner found a way to tilt things, and a pretty good argument could be made that that goal might have been the single biggest goal of the season.

In the “Who Am I” Altitude pregame segment, Hannan was described by Ovechkin(!) as the defenseman he least likes to play against. Really? Hannan? Must have been talking Good Scott Hannan, who played for San Jose and earned a fat contract and has reappeared this season in spades, not Bad Scott Hannan who played for Colorado the past two seasons.
(Good Scott Hannan is actually surprisingly good. He’s more than worthy of a long post talking about how he’s easily our #1 defenseman and is right up there with Chris Stewart for Most Improved. Keep it up, Good Scott, because you’ve still got a ways to go to apologize for the turdis you laid the past two seasons.)

Well…… we’re lucky to be down just 2-0, but our PP is looking pitiful.

nothing like we saw against calgary for sure…i hope sacco gets on them about shooting more, about carrying the puck into the zone over just dumping it in, washington’s D is way too mobile to do that for another 40 mins, we also need to prevent their blue line to blue line passes

D and C isn’t a preferred offensive scheme. If you don’t have the # advantage at the blue line or a passing lane, you have to dump. Otherwise it’s a turnover AT the blueline and not the full length of the rink from your own end. The Avs are just taking what the Caps are giving them. What they need is quicker breakouts to take away time from the Caps D who right now have time to get in position and activate forwards in the neutral zone.

Don’t mind how the avs have been playing this game. They’re skating well and are keeping up in shots with the Caps. They haven’t been pinning the Avs in their own zone like earlier games in the season either. Its just everything the Caps have thrown at the net has been in the back of it.

IIRC, this is the kind of thing that led to Roy demanding a trade from Montreal (not at all suggesting that will happen). He got left in for a thrashing and was pissed about it. Understandable, at somepoint you have to protect your goalie (for lack of a better term).

No, they have on some of them. You guys are shutting down Ovi pretty good – the problem there is that when Ovi gets shut down, that’s when Flash activates (and he did – Flash is our name for Tomas Fleischmann). Ovi isn’t getting the goals, although he’s had a chance or two – it’s everybody else. That’s why the Caps win as much as they do, they’re just hard to shut down.
To be fair, the guys came out ready to rumble off losing to Toronto.

I think he will be, too. It’s not that – the Caps are an emotion-driven team and they do not take kindly to their guys getting hurt or getting abused. It’s the difference between them letting up and winning 6-4 or 5-2 and them crushing a team 6-2 or 7-1. They’ll often let up in the third when they’re ahead, but not if they’re angry.

Every team's got reckless players
Ovechkin’s even been accused of being reckless a time or two, as I’m sure Daniel Briere can attest.
If the player’s a cheapshot artist (or perceived that way) but he’s good enough, fans live with it (see Lemieux, Dale Hunter, and Ovechkin, for example). If the player sucks ass and does it too often, fans will protest (see Brad May and Koci, for example).

Holy crap
I played a Contra for the Wii (Virtual Console, I believe) and it was ridiculously hard. I know, I know. That’s how Contra rolls but even after years of dominating Contra I was still blown away by this particular version. Also, Contra 4 on the DS in Hard Mode. Holy hell.

Wilson did get just manhandled behind his own net a couple times. In Duchene’s defense, he has created a couple rushes with his speed, but absolutely nothing has come out of any of them.

Maybe they can make the score respectable in the third. And, I know no one wants to hear it right now, but I’m pretty sure that an NHL team has already overcome a 5-0 deficit this year (I think it was the Hawks’ v. the Flames). Just sayin.

What makes that even weirder is that the Minnesota game should have gone to OT if I remember right. I think Duchene had a disallowed goal in that game that was questionable. That would be two of them against Minnesota this year, although the first one was a good call.

What did you call Ovechkin after he boarded Briere from behind? Probably “aggressive,” just like we called Claude Lemieux and both our franchises called Dale Hunter. At the time I said it was a bad hit. Probably not intentional but definitely bad. I would have been fine with a 1-2 game suspension considering I do want the league to crack down on things like hits to the head, and hits from behind. (Unfortunately Colon Campbell in his ivory tower is completely inept at doling out any sort of consistent punishment that can act as a deterrent to dangerous behavior.)
I’m okay with defending players, but it’s when a fan fails to admit that anything wrong had been done that annoys me. You can defend while still acknowledging something wrong happened.
When Ovechkin got his recent suspension for kneeing Gleason I agreed with the suspension but defended him against the players that called him dirty. Was it a reckless and bad hit? Absolutely, but I will disagree on it being dirty as to me dirty implies an intent that I don’t think was there.
What it comes down to is that I’m against blind homerism. Reasonable defense is perfectly acceptable as long as you can defend your position.

I saw your later comment, so I guess we agree – if you have a dirty fuck who’s any good, you generally like him. Dale Hunter we have in common, 99% of Avs fans (and Devils fans) loved Claude Lemieux, and Ovechkin’s a dirty, cheap, beloved-in-Washington fuck.
If, on the other hand, he stinks, it’s easy to shit on him because you know he generally doesn’t contribute anything on the ice.

Not to be as bad as it was no. Hit from behind? Yes. But I maintained then, and still do now, that the hit was made much worse by the fact that the door wasn’t fully closed and Briere caught the edge. If the door doesn’t open upon impact, it’s a nudge that happens multiple times a game and gets penalized and everyone moves on. But since the door opens it makes the hit a lot worse than it would be anywhere else on the ice. It’s like a hit a few years ago (don’t have video, and don’t remember the players, sorry) in which one player was hit into the boards, and the player that got hit had his face hit the glass at the end of the bench. It was an otherwise normal hit made significantly worse by the location.
I think the same principle applies to Ovie-Briere (given the caveat that the hit was still illegal, just made worse by the door). I’m not arguing he didn’t mean to make contact, I’m arguing that there wasn’t an intent to injure. Had Ovechkin been trying to injure Briere he’d have gone a lot faster and leaned into it a lot more.

Last season when basketball season really kicked up in conference play, RCT exploded. With all of the crazy stuff happening to the football program, though, the focus has been almost entirely on that. It hasn’t helped that the blog’s main writer has basically abandoned his post and makes an appearance every so often. Catholic schoolgirl girlfriend and college stole him from us. Another one of the heavy contributors has also been absent quite a bit lately.

There was a point where I was the biggest John-Michael Liles fan on earth (or at least the champion of the "does not want to have sex with him" division) but that may have been as bad a game as I’ve ever seen a defenseman play in the NHL.
