Avs Capitals Recap
Hello all, my name is Dustin Burfiend. This is my first fanpost here at MHH and it would be my luck for the Avs to have a horrible game on a night I decide to try my hand at a recap. But we'll get to that in a moment. First, a bit about me. I've loved the Avs since I was kid. Even though I was only 7 at the time I can still remember how excited I was when Uwe Krupp scored to give the Avs their first Cup. I've watched them religously ever since. Favorite player ever: Chris Drury. Most hated player ever: Todd Bertuzzi (who else?). In non-avs info, I'm 21 and attend the University of Colorado. I'm originally from Michigan (and hate the Red Wings even more because of it).
To the game: What can I say? The Avs got beat and they got beat badly. T.J. Galiardi (pictured above) was the only Av that came to play and I'm glad he got a goal as reward.
More after the jump (did I do that right?)
-The Caps are lights out in the first period, out scoring their opponets 42-17 so far this season, and tonight was no exception. They knocked the Avs back on their heels and never gave them a chance to get back in the game.
-I guess they were looking for a big win after getting smashed by Toronto. Toronto!
-The D in front of him was atrocious but Anderson had a lackluster game. He really should gave been pulled after the fourth goal.
-Theodore on the other hand had a solid if not spectacular game. What is it with former Avs goalies actually playing not horrible against the Avs this season?
-Stoa was in for his 2nd game and largely invisible. I'm not sure what he is doing playing with Duchene and Galiardi. The Avs need the Duke back something fierce. Mercier also had his second game of the season. Didn't do much but he was the only player without a minus.
-Duchene was typical Duchene, lots of speed and a few chances. Picked up an assist. I did see him lose a couple crucial board battles though. He's only eighteen and hopefully he'll learn to better put his strength to use in the defensive zone as well as the offensive zone.
-Kyle Wilson debuted for the Caps tonight (on his birthday!), picked up two assists and looked strong all night. Pretty sweet birthday present if you ask me.
-Tucker is looking hungry for the puck again after turning invisible upon his return from injury but I noticed a couple of times tonight where he was just standing around in the defensive zone. Not what the Avs need in a vet.
-Not sure if the McCleod goal shoud have been waved off. I think it was a borderline call. He was shoved into Theo but it looks like he might have given the goaltender an extra shot in typical McLeod fashion.
-That's it I guess. The Avs looked sluggish tonight. Maybe they're tired, having played the most games of any team so far and maybe the outstanding Caps just made them look sluggish. Bad game but the Avs are young.
Dustin's Three Stars of the Game
3rd Star - T.J. Galiardi - a goal, only Av that looked solid all night long
2nd Star - Thomas Fleischmann - two goals, this is the kind of secondary scoring the Avs need
1st Star - Kyle Wilson - two assists, kudos to the kid for coming out flying in his birthday debut
Minus of the night - John Michael Liles. Two massive breakdowns that led to two goals. Minus 3 on the night. Liles just could not seem to handle the puck tonight. Him shooting it into his own slot on Fleischmann's 2nd goal was particularly stomach churning.

Welcome!!
Nice work, especially on your first day.
Would that we could have said that of the Avs this evening.
In my desperate search for positives:
-Avs’ PK was pretty strong tonight. They took a page from the Caps and actually attacked the points. Best way to kill a penalty – in the other team’s zone.
As far as what went wrong, well, I need to go to work tomorrow. Perhaps I’ll opine on this point when I win Powerball and have a month or two to dedicate to the endeavour.
-I though Ryan Wilson did a nice job against OV tonight. I like this kid more and more every game.

STOP LYING YOU"RE NOT ME. I" DON"T GO TO CU.
How’d you get the rest down perfectly?

really though
that’s almost exactly my story…
I’d add Wolski as a minus for this game. He played for about a third of his ice time and there were big streteches where we were icing the top line, trying desperately to get something going and he’d be skating around nearly aimlessly at a ‘brisk walk’ pace. Grr…
We really couldn’t catch a break though. Miserable game to be on Anderson’s end twice for…

Entire top fwd line
Stats, Wolly and Stewie, were horrible, imo. What bugged me the most about this game is it was the first one I’ve seen this year where guys were frequently watching the puck go by them expecting someone else to make a play on it. Including that entire line. We saw that plenty from last year’s team. I didn’t like seeing it again.
And with the 32nd pick in the 2009 NHL draft, the Red Wings select: Someone other than Ryan O'Reilly. LOL@Detoilet.

the inevitability of this was so very painful.

It was, wasn’t it? I thought teams were supposed to light up their former goaltenders like Toronto lit up Raycroft last season. Or maybe its that teams are supposed to light up Raycroft. Either way, the Avs failed.

I went to a game against the fLames a while back when Philippe “4 goals allowed is an OK night, right?” Sauve was playing for Calgary. The Flames wound up winning like 7-1. FML.
Bills fan? In Colorado? It's more likely than you think.

This game?
Tuesday, January 24th, 2006.
It was 7-4 actually and the Avs won.
Game Recap
Some guy named Joe Sakic scored 2 goals to pass Guy Lefleur on that night. Tanguay, Svatos, Liles, Clark and Laaksonen had goals as well.
Aebi’s win gave him 8 in January which tied the club record (Roy) for wins in a single month.
With 32 seconds left in the game, Sauve left his crease, after a slashing call on some guy named Tony Amonte, and he and Abei fought next the Avs goal. Budaj and Kipper had to finish the game for their respective teams.

Ah, I remember Antti Laaksonen
That guy was so freaking fast. Too bad he was generally a shitty hockey player otherwise.

Yeah, what’s up with that? Is Theo back on the juice? Oh wait, sorry, I mean Propecia…

I completely agree, as anyone who was at the bar I was watching from can attest to.
