Game 39 Recap: Ducks 4, Avalanche 2
Congratulations to Brandon Yip on his first NHL goal, Matt Hendricks on his first NHL assist...and, uh, whatever happened in the game after I went to bed.
ADDENDUM: Joe here.
What a complete and total bed-crapping. After 53 minutes of regulation play, the Avs had a 2-0 lead. In the last seven minutes of the game, they gave up four goals, including two in the final thirty seconds.
Craig Anderson probably shouldn't have played this game, having beat the Wild the night before, but it wasn't just his fault the team lost. He stopped 39 shots and got the first star.
The Avs were out-shot 43-17. Why bother even showing up at all? A forfeit would have been less embarrassing.
By the way, the new third jerseys should all be burned and never worn again.
Happy holidays.

The whole game sucked (other than Yip’s goal). It just took the Ducks 53:00 to break a hole in Andy’s wall. The Avs never controlled this game, never!

To reprise a theme from the last recap...
and the final result notwithstanding,
Brandon Yip, has, in point of fact, made Darcy Tucker superfluous (not without the direct collusion of one Mr. Tucker, Darcy).

From my on ice seats (/bragging) what i noticed:
1. probably shouldn’t go into the prevent d to start the 2nd with a 1 goal lead. the avs just didn’t have it tonight, they had no energy.
2. Hendricks had a great game and could eventually devlope into the next lappy (let’s remember it took time for lappy to develope into lappy), Yip had a great 1st period, but I never noticed him on ice afterwards, did the avs shorten their bench?
3. The best player by far was Stewie, his legs are always moving,
4. Duchene holds onto the puck for longer than his body will allow him to. He needs more strenght, if he puts on a bit more muscle (and not a whole lot, we’re talking about a second more) and he’ll be lights out.
5. O’Reilly seems like another guy out there right now, I know he’s getting a ton of minutes especially on the PK, but he’s not sneaking up on anyone any more. He’s never out of position but he’s not making any special plays. I’m not trying to critisize but he’s seems to have leveled off.
6. wilson was solid and foote was pissed off all night, I haven’t seen an angry game out of him like that in forever.
7. Ryan is a cheap wuss. he can’t even dive right, he exploded out of a hit about 5 seconds after the first period ended and 7 seconds after he was hit. I can’t believe he even bothered to do the act. Getslaf is a clone of pronger in that duche mode.

Hendricks
I totally agree with your analysis of him. I posted before that I thought he could be the next Lappy. We met him at the practice facility when we went to have players sign some stuff for my son. He is truly a heart and soul guy who wears that heart on his sleeve. He loves the team and the fans. He is also one of those players who, when interviewed, doesn’t give the whole company speak – he tells it like it is and shows actually emotion. Teams need those kind of players around to keep things real.

i caught bits and pieces of the game..you could see the ducks gaining momentum as the second went on, even with the avs second goal. when you only fire 15 shots on the net and they fire something like 50, as awesome as andy was, he’s not going to stop them all.
also, there seemed like a generous amout of people at the game, does anyone have any numbers?

there was some point in the third that it was 9-24 or 25ish in the shots against, I don’t blame the refs (aside from pretty much allowing anyone to run over Anderson, the avs should really start to run the opposing goalie if they aren’t going to call it, might as well take advantage of it).

I mean…this could become a real problem for this team. I don’t live in Denver…but do they market the Avs there…at all? And I’m not talking about the Kroenke sports network. I mean outside the family.

We let people treat Anderson like a doormat and neither the team nor the officials protect him. No wonder he was leading the league in goalie penalty minutes for so long…

I blame the D, and Anderson, though it’s hard to lay all the blame on him. After playing a stellar game for nearly 45 minutes, and I mean he was SPECTACULAR…Andy broke down. The 3rd goal he was down WAAAAY too early on. Not a good goal at all.
The defense? Yeah…who forgot that last 15 minutes of the game?
But there is no killer instinct on this team, no finishing ability

well crap. I woke up and it was 2-0 and went back to sleep, figuring we were all set.

That said, Anderson again played well, overly well for about 42 minutes (as did the rest of the team). And he deserved the number 1 star of the game (which he got) for those 42 minutes
One thing Dater had a point on this morning was a Quincey play with about 35 seconds left, when he iced the puck with a lot of open ice in front of him. It ultimately led to the game winner. This team all year can’t clear a puck to save their soul…then with a chance for a chip-type clear, we ice it. So frustrating

You said it not me, but I agree totally with you. It was Conquistidorian who was talking about Budaj in a thread where he went down on his belly for a poke check. He rightfully scolded Budaj on doing that because it opened up the entire top of the net. He said that Budaj has to trust his defense to clear that puck rather than go to his belly (and trusting the defense may be an issue with both goaltenders). Anderson was lights making one crazy save after another until the the end of the game, but this bad habit he has of going down too soon is going to bit him in the butt. Unfortunately, since the offense was held to only 2 goals (which wasn’t hard since there were only 17 shots on goal), there was no room for any errors in this game.
They won the Wild game because the offense bailed them out by scoring 4 goals. If the Avs want to make it to the playoffs they are going to have to get the goal against down. An average of over 3 goals against is too much. This means the entire team is going to have to play a solid 60 minute game, especially the defense. Allowing a team to fire 43 shots at your goaltender is not going to assist in keeping the goals against down. And the third period crap fest needs to end. The late 3rd period goals against have got to go!!!

No…finishing…ability.
Something this team has seriously been lacking since 2004. How many years in a row have we talked about leads never being safe in the 3rd…or not enough 60 minute efforts. It’s a continuing theme that has to end.
And yes, that’s the tred a few of my friends and I have noticed this year. When Anderson goes down too early, that’s when he has his bad games. When he stays upright, and goes down last second, he is nearly unbeatable. I don’t know why he gets into that habit, but it’s something Thibault really needs to work with him on
If this is a re-build...we should do it every year.

Dropping early tends to be a sign of fatigue among the goalies I coach. That or a lack of confidence/inability to read the shot. I don’t think Andy suffers from either of those, so I’m going to go with fatigue.

Avs got screwed over by the zebras
Did anyone watch the whole game last night?!! Yes the Avs could have played better but the first goal against Anderson was clear goaltender interference that went uncalled. Ryan set the equivalent of a pick on Anderson and Quincey away from the net allowing Nedermeyer to shoot at a completely open net. Instead of a Ducks goal Avs should of had a powerplay and would have hampered Ducks ability for 2 minutes to generate any substantial offense. Ducks continued to crash into Anderson and he was getting no calls for interference. Perhaps the so called “breakdown” of Anderson happened because he not only had to worry about keeping the puck out of the net he also had to look out for a Duck that would come crashing into him!!!! Anderson played lights out and rightfully was the first star of the night, get off of his back!!! The D was unspectacular and the officials unwillingness to protect Anderson cost the Avs the game. Coach Sacco or Thibault needs to send the league a tape of teams that come crashing into Anderson without a penalty being called it seems as though teams are putting in their scouting report of Anderson that if you run into Andy you can take him off his game (and by the way you will not be called for Goaltender interference). ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!!
by Adam Manter on Dec 23, 2009 8:36 AM MST reply actions 0 recs
Yeah
that goal was an awful call (and I’m really pretty sick and tired of the refs not understanding goaltender interference this season). but the Avs still had a 1 goal lead at that point.
The refs wouldn’t have had the opportunity to make a bad call had the Avs had the puck near the Anaheim net. The Avs made absolutely zero effort to generate any kind of game in the Anaheim zone after they got up 2-0, and that’s a problem that keeps manifesting itself all season.

At the same time, the Avs had a 2 goal lead with 7 minutes left, and refs or no refs, they still should have held on. I used to be a big “refs blew it for us” guy…but then I watch championship teams, and they win with the hand they are given, and DESPITE the refs
Yes, Andy is getting run WAY too much…but outside of Foote a few games ago, our guys still aren’t taking other teams to task on it. And until they do something about it, it’s going to keep happening
If this is a re-build...we should do it every year.
by chiavsfan on Dec 23, 2009 8:40 AM MST up reply actions 0 recs
I agree with the championship teams comment but refs have to be held accountable for poor perfomances
Goaltending is hard enough trying to follow the puck and keep it out of the net add to that now you have to look out to see whether or not someone is going to crash into you. The FACT is after the first goal the Ducks continued to go after Andy and interfere with him so Andy not only had to follow the puck but also had to look out for another “Ryan” pick. That is a quazi impossible task. While I would have to concede that the AVS team in general were outplayed, I am upset that we lost mostly because Andy played too well to lose this game. Andy was not outplayed and deserved a W for his efforts. It was clear as day to me that Andy was in the zone for the entire game until the Ryan pick and after he was clearly rattled. While I agree that refs blew it for us mentality is not championship material, REFS NEED TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR POOR PERFORMANCES and in tightly contested game like last night one bad call can be the difference between a W or a L. As poorly as the Avs played the would have been on the PP and would have been on the offensive which could have energized the team as a whole. HOLD REFS ACCOUNTABLE FOR BAD CALLS; they will only be that much better when the games matter more fighting for playoff positioning and the playoffs!

I’m not going to blame the officilas. Sure it was a terrible call and I’m getting tired of the officials not call these things. But the Team did not show up. They had no business being up 2-0 at any point of the game. When you can’t even manage 10+ shot in any period you shouldn’t win a game. The Ducks spent most of the game in the Avs zone. When the Avs did get through the neutral zone they either took a quick shot and retreated, or they passed around the zone for 30-40 seconds and either lost the puck or shot it off a Duck player and then retreated.
Andy play spectacular for about 52:00, then either the fatigue of playing 112:00 in two night started to get to him, or all the Ducks hard work finally started paying off (even if a lot of it wasn’t legal). The icing in the final 30 seconds was just the “Bertuzzi” on the cake.
The Ducks wanted a victory and worked for it. The Avs not so much…

I was really disheartened after this game. To me, it could be a turning point in the season — for the worst. I’ve gotta think this whole taking the foot off the gas with a lead thing has to be deep inside the Avs’ craniums…remember, they had to hold on for dear life against the Mild the night before…
Is it just me, or do the Avs remind anyone of another local team…new, young coach, a lot of different players, hot start, growing inability to finsh, blowing important games late at home…

Story idea for the MasterDater,
Write a self-righteous, preachy piece about the fact that over 1/2 of the fanbase team didn’t show up and how if this lack of support for the box office goaltender continues, it spells the impending doom of the franchise.

That was our Merry Christmas?
I flew home to Denver for the holidays and picked this game to go to as my Christmas present to myself.
I was lucky enough to score 7th row seats right next to the AVS goal in the 3rd period – it helped that the place was empty. The Altidudes keep talking about how with the way the AVS play, the crowd will have to start coming back and attendance will go back up. I highly doubt anybody that was at that game will be in a hurry to see that again.
The whole Pepsi center was in shock, well, except for stupid smiling Ryan Getzlaf after he chipped the game winner over Andy.

ya know
Avs were playing their 3rd game in 4 nights with tons of travel interpersed, and on the the tail end of a back-to-back.
They’re a young team, they clearly got rattled by the goal against and the ref screw job. I say it was tired legs + young team + a dash of poor officiating, and that’s it. I’m actually not too worked up about the whole thing, though FFS can we at least get the loser point?
FWIW, I didn’t think the shot totals told the whole story either. The Avs were working pretty hard for 2 periods, and had lots of chances. even the first part of the 3rd was pretty good.
