From the Rocky Mountain News 2/18/09:
Ovechkin scores lying down in Caps’ 4-3 SO win

WASHINGTON (AP) — Alex Ovechkin’s latest how-did-he-do-that goal was preceded by his newest move — a how-did-he-do-that pass to himself.

The NHL’s reigning MVP used his backhand to bank the puck off the boards to get around Roman Hamrlik at the blue line, skated through the faceoff circle and kept going even after he was hooked and jabbed off his skates by Kyle Chipchura.

Sliding toward the crease, Ovechkin then poked the puck past the right pad of goaltender Carey Price to create another YouTube instant classic….

…. The goal ranks in the same league as Ovechkin’s sliding, stick-behind-the-head classic against the Phoenix Coyotes on Jan. 16, 2006, one of the all-time favorites. (Cont’d).

Wow

Ovechkin is AMAZING! If only the Avs had a player like that. I hope we win on Friday (fingers severely crossed here), but it will be quite the game to watch.

However, I completely blame that goal on Price. Goalies are supposed to bail out the mistakes of their team every night (isn’t that what people have been ranting about the last few days her at MHH). Price should have been able to stop that breakaway crazy shot. It’s all his fault. :-)

I’m really excited for this game! That was Ovie’s league-leading 42nd goal; Mike Green just broke the NHL record for longest goal-scoring streak by a defenseman with 8 games.

And I’m dying to see how Theo plays against his former teammates….

Secretly, I am hoping he gets spanked, just because of all the “Oh, we never should have let him go” stuff we have had to endure from a certain reporter.

I think it is going to be a fun game too.

The only thing that would make it better is if it were a home game and I could see it in person. Now, that would ROCK! Seeing Ovechkin in person would be worth the ticket price.

Is Tavares really being touted as a “franchise player,” like Ovie or Lecavalier? That would be worth “tanking” for.

Well

I’ve been hearing about him for 3 years, so I think so.

The "Buffalo Goal"

There’s some dispute among Caps fans now as to whether the goal Ovechkin scored on 12/26 earlier this season against Buffalo Sabres, ie, the “Buffalo goal,” might be better than the one above that he just scored against Montreal, the “Montreal goal.” Of course, everyone including Ovie thinks the “Phoenix goal” is still his best one…so far.

Here’s the link to the “”http://capitals.nhl.tv/team/console.jsp?hlg=20082009,2,509&event=WSH443" target="new">Buffalo goal."
