Chris Drury, who inherited the captaincy from the departed Jaromir Jagr, has yet to rise anywhere near the occasion of occasional leadership and appears burdened by a five-year, $35.25 million contract that's way out of line with his career performance.

More to the point...
Drury isn’t the end-all of hockey players. About time somebody called him out.
But some people still think that if we had Drury today we would be in first place in the division, the conference even!
Sorry
got off on a tangent from your post.
Avs definitely do not need another over-paid, underperforming player. They have plenty of those already.
Avs. Sticking it to the Red Wings
No, no
Good point, one player doesn’t save a team from failure…actually a pretty good tangent

But he is the highest ranked player on the completed Top 19 Avs of all-time list!
Actually, I have always thought that he was a little bit overrated. Would be a great guy to have on the team, but not for that price.

supplanted by tbd in the top 6, probably. Just like Sakic, Roy, Forsberg, Foote and Blake, would be my guess.

As long as he is ahead of Drury
I’m ok with that.

if you look purely at stats, Duke has had a lot better career than Drury. I pulled it up recently and can’t remember exact numbers, but it was pretty obvious. we can snipe back and forth with reasons as to why this is, but the facts are still the facts: for whatever reason, Drury hasn’t been the shining star that we all assumed he would be. a great player, and a star, sure, but he hasnt shaken the world apart.
various duke/drury stats-
various cumulative stats since the start of the ’02 – ’03 season, first year Drury was with the flames-
___________________Duke___________Drury
Total Goals:__________194____________148
Total Assists:_________205____________189
Total Points:__________399____________337
Total Plus/Minus:______+93____________-24
Total PP:_____________76_____________61
Total Shots:__________1320___________1131
Total Shot Perc:_______14.7____________13.1
I havent followed the Rangers enough to know who Chris was playing with, and whether they were good or not. but the raw numbers show that Duke has had a more productive career.
The Calder
I always thought the Duke should have won.

Too bad he was in the west. How many western conference players have on the clader in the last decade anyway.

We have a Calder winner now!

I’ve always thought of the Calder as sort of the “Token Western Conference” trophy, the one where the hockey media says "well geez we have to give an award to someone in the Western Conference this season, might as well be the Calder.
After seeing this list I think even that’s out of whack.

SOS
STASTNY WAS ROBBED in ’07

Malkin was pretty damn good too though. It’s a shame that Stastny didn’t win, but I can see picking Malkin. Heck, would you take Malkin or Stastny now? I love Stastny’s game, but I’d make that swap.
Yeah
but the issue wasn’t who’s going to be a better player (which is how 95% of the people voted) it’s who had the better season.
Put i that fun “East coast Bias” factor and he was robbed.

Unless
you take into your theory the premise that more goals are scored in the East (the more offensive conference) and that more defense (or better defense) is played in the West. Malkin probably deserved to win it, but it would have been interesting to see how different it might have been if Stastny played in the East, or if Malkin had played in the West.
Also is the fact that very few people even had a clue as to who Stastny was, as was obvious at least in the media treatment of him when the Avs did play East conference team, in part due to the East’s lazy approach to covering games in the West because of the time difference.

More games
And he had loads more ice time than Stastny, and boatloads more Powerplay time.
Here’s my comparison of the two

Brodeur
Wow, with the success of New Jersey’s no name back up is there any doubt left that the Legend of Brodeur is padded by the team in front of him year after year?

Its definitely harder to justify now. he’s one of the greats ttheres no doubt about that but I’ll always rate Roy at the top, If only because Brodeur sounds like an arrogant tool, but has the subtle arrogance where he doesn’t come out and say how great he is but drops subtle hints that he thinks he is.

Over
rated. One of the most overrated players in recent history. Calgary loved him so much that they couldn’t wait to get rid of him after just one season. Hell, Alex Tanguay lasted there longer than that. Hasn’t won anything since he left the Avs. Good guy to have on a team for about half of what he makes. That’s a helluva lot of money for “intangibles.”
by Dan Winkler on Feb 23, 2009 12:49 PM MST reply actions
Not defending the guy, but he got his $$$ because that was what the ‘market’ determined as his worth. Can’t blame the guy for not being the second-coming just cuz he rakes in the big bucks**.
**Unless we’re talking about Avs players, then you can totally blame them.

Agree
I never blame a guy for what he makes – ever. He and Hannan probably have the same agent.

I was going to give you a slap and say you have to be good before you can get an agent. But then how does that explain Arnason and Tucker? Oh well….
MHH: Like the Avs organization, we’ve now officially lost our minds.
