After dissing Jose Theodore earlier today, I have no doubt that he will be bring his Dr Jeckyll personality tonight and completely stone the Avalanche. You might as well start preparing for that now. Even if Theodore struggles, the Caps have a defenseman with more goals than anyone on Colorado. Ouch.
One of my dirty little secrets is that I watch very little hockey other than Avalanche games. And I missed the game when the Avs last played the Capitals, so I'm kind of excited to see Ovechkin, Backstrom, Green and Semin in action. I'll still be pulling for the boys in burgondy, of course, but I wouldn't mind seeing a highlight reel goal like the one Ovechkin pulled off the other night.
For the Avs, Raycroft is in net for the third straight game. Paul Stastny is not quite ready. Darcy Tucker is (lucky us). John-Michael Liles has been placed on IR and Darcy Campbell has been recalled. Etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.

I think I have the perfect outcome :
Avs put up 8 goals on Theo in the first period and chase him. Caps fans realize the horror of the Theo. Backup comes in and Ovy leads a 9 unanswered goal comeback prior to OT, and the tank for taveras continues. hey, it could happen!
seriously though, I kind of like rooting for the Avs to both win AND lose. Either outcome of games there’s positives!

As I am always for the Avs winning, I am however not a fan of all this tank for Taveras. I would much rather see the team try hard, gain confidence and experience, even if it means getting knocked out in round 1. The Avalanche have always done a good job drafting players while finishing top/mid of the pack.
I really don’t think many people want to see the avs tank, ruin the credibility of their name, lose fans in the seats just so they can draft somebody who may or may not be the next great player. Look at Stamkos. Sometimes It works sometimes it doesn’t.
How many top 5 draft picks did the Penguins have? Now look at them.
The avs have good players, they just need to get healthy get confident and maybe make a few key trades.

And they made the Stanley Cup finals last season. If the Avs could get any one of those 5 with a top 5 pick (well except maybe Fleury) I’d be pretty happy. And the jury i still out on Stamkos, who was probably pushed to the NHL too soon
That being said… I agree with you. I don’t think the Avs should tank, however bringing up young talent to develop isn’t tanking. It’s playing for the future, and I have no problem with this.

Yeah sure they made the cup finals but they got beat pretty bad by the red wings, and now rumor has it malkin could be on the move as well as staal. The Avalanche get equally beat by the red wings and that was with half their roster either sick and injured.
I guess it was a use point to try to bring up I was just thinking I’d personally rather see my team play hard and develope every year rather then tank for years like the penguins did just to make it to finals once to not even come close to winning, and now that entire team they spent so many years tanking/building up is on the verge of being disbanned.
They got beat, I wouldn’t say it was pretty bad. And saying the Avs got equally beat is like saying a boxer that loses on a points decision got as equally beat as someone who gets KO’d from the first punch. It’s BS.

Im not trying to argue. The avs lost 4-0 in round 2. It should have been 4-1 in my opinion, and that was with the avs sick and injured. The pens lost 4-2 to the wings in the finals a series that should have been 4-1 for the wings in my opinion and that was a healthy Penguins team. There both the Avs/pens got equally beat by the redwings, regardless of what round it was in and what the series score was. It took the pens years of tanking which seriously hurt the reputation of the team, the seat sales, verge of going bankrupt ect ect, and now the team will be lucky to make the playoffs and come trade deadline those top picks should be shipped out of town.
The avs have always drafted well without tanking, even as top seeded team in the west they always managed just fine, they made their fans proud, always tried hard.
6 games. And I’d take a SCF appearence right about now (and another 15 years f Crosby)

I don't believe in Peter Budaj.
i’ve never really understood why you would rush someone young tallent though the system when you can sign a journeyman player to fill the same position and in all reality get the same results just to satisify anyone. Guite would probably have as many points as stamkos if he’d played in that many games and minutes (his +/- would be horrendous) but you get my point. I have always been amazed at the first round tallent that gets burnt out early.

i understand where you’re coming from, but i think the avs need some top tier talent more than anything right now. it’s tough to see them lose, but that’s how teams get malkins, crosbys, sakics, and forsbergs. this draft is super deep too, this is a good year for it.
i’d be happy if they made the playoffs too, don’t get me wrong. but if they’re going to miss them, i want them to miss big and get that good pick.

Losing in the first round was probably one of the best things that could have happened to the avs. Lets say theo did not get sick and he carried the Avs all the way to the finals last year. This year he would most likely still be on the team getting paid 5-6 million again with the avs still practically in last place but with 6 million less cap space to work with.

This sounds like an argument for our low-paid goalies :-)
My cheer tonight: LIGHT UP THEO!! You know, it would actually be really fun if this game went to shootouts and The Baron did one of his moves where he ends up standing like a lone soldier in front of the net, with Theo sprawled out completely out of position. I can always dream!
The tanking thing – I’ll never actively root against the Avs. However, if they end up doing really poorly, I guess everyone here is trying to find the silver lining.
Avs. Sticking it to the Red Wings
For many of us
at least for myself and those I believe are in the same camp. We don’t really want the Avs to tank, but unless the Avs really make a big run (like they did 2 seasons ago) and make the playoffs this time, it isn’t really worth it.
Which would suck worse? Going on a run and missing the playoffs by a point or two, plus missing out on the likes of a Tavares/Hedman player? Or calling up some young players and letting them get some experience for next season while losing a bunch of games, but getting a very good draft pick?

At least it wasn’t the logo, or that stupid wordmark they pass of as a logo. Am I the only person who mega loathes the Caps jerseys. i always prefered the old eagle and capital building ones they had before RBK Edged up the jerseys.

i think my favorite caps jersey is the old school one that had the capitals written out in that 1970’s style in white, blue and red.
Isn’t that what their current one is based on. I hate any jersey with a wordmark, the logo is what seperated them from almost every other sporting jersey. And thanks to reebok its slowly dying away.

Thats something Roy would probably consider. Boods is too nice, he doesn’t have Roys anger problems. Apparantly thats what all goalies need to do, smash things after a goal because coaches LOVE that kind of stuff.

so does it look like the caps are “playing down to the level” of the struggling team? lots of people have been saying that this season about the caps. even boudreau said something about it.
They seem to be all over the ice
the Caps have just missed some shots. However, the Avs have played pretty good D (with the exception of them taking each other out on the goal), they are limiting the Caps shots and chances, they are getting sticks on the passes and rebounds. Caps might be looking for that one extra pass (much like the Avs do – see Wolski earlier in this game).

But really, I like Ovie. I haven’t seen anyone play with his level of passion since forsberg in his prime. Although forsberg had more attitude and less joy. (and is still my favorite ever mancrush)

I love Ovie, not in the way of the ancient greeks, but the way a human loves a dog and occassionally a gorrilla loves a kitty.

Last time he commented on Japers’ Rink: January 12th. It was his 9th comment there.

i just saw these on the blog, and admired them greatly. i didnt feel any real dislike for theo, even considering the shit he talked before the game. but upon reflection, there really is a wonderful sensation of giving a toolbag exactly what he deserved: being eviscerated in the paint by his ‘washed up’ old team. enjoy your money, mercenary, and keep striving for inconsistency.
