Boumeester?
"Even if a deal seems less likely with Florida in playoff position, the Panthers reportedly will consider offers for D Jay Bouwmeester, but would require more than just prospects and picks to make such a deal. The Buffalo News says that the asking price is a top-four defenceman and a veteran forward that can be sold to the Florida fan base (and help the Panthers make the playoffs this season)."
So I don't normally get into the trade deadline hype and speculation because so much of it is blatant BS or outright wrong, but the asking price for Florida's stud d-man caught my eye. That price would seem to have leo and lappy written all over it. Even if we had to throw in something else (pick or someone like hensick or svatos) and take one of their players (skrastins? ha, just kidding) it seems like this would be a good deal for us (especially if we could hypothetically/ fantasy world reality sign lappy back in the summer). The trouble is, I don't know if it would be a good deal for them. What do you guys think? Pipe dream or potentially good trade for both teams (ie one that has a reasonable shot). I’d do that in a heartbeat, but i think they would want people long term signed, not UFAs to be like Leo and Lappy. If you could get him to agree to an extension before the trade, I’d think hard about a trade, but he seems determined to hit the market.
If we’re going to go after him and expend serious resources, I’d rather do it in UFA. less risk.
I'm not so sure
I’d really want to test the market i nthis economy. I read somewhere (can’t remember where) that certain free agents (hossa and gaborik were mentioned) are going to get closer to 5-6 mil than the 9mil they wanted. That being said, I’m sure some GM will be willing to throw major money at an elite defender. Those aren’t too easy to come by.

And...
It could be all speculation. Hockey owners could do something stupid and throw down $9M/season in a recession. I mean these are the same people who demanded a salary cap to save them from themselves, so anything is possible.

I'm not sure
That its the owners so much as the GMs that are guilty for the throwing money around thing. Certainly ownership has to sign off on those sorts of things, but they usually aren’t the “hockey brains”. The Gm’s are the ones saying, hey we need to get this guy to win/save my job/ whatever, and the owner either says ok or fires the guy. When the owners are really concerned about money, we get tools like the FG accountant that seem to follow the “if they’re mediocre we can at least fill some seats” line of thought.

Unfortunately Leopold and Lappy wouldn’t cut it. You are probably talking Liles. I’m sure they would want someone who is relatively young and under contract for at least next year. Then you are looking to sweeten the pot with Shattenkirk or a first round pick. The Avs can’t afford to give up those type of assets. Like thedoctor said, you are better off going after him if he hits the free agent market.

Well,
That answers that question. All of the guys I mentioned being UFA evened it out a little in my book, but if the panthers are looking for more stability then it definitely nixes some of that possibility. I’d still probably trade liles for boumeester, but it would then depend on what else was in the pot. I don’t think I’d be comfortable with giving away any picks, although a prospect plus established player in addition to liles might be ok. Maybe if they could do a sign and trade thing, assuming any of the parties would be amenable to that.

blasphemy
don’t even suggest shipping my boyfriend off anywhere…unless of course it’s LA. physical proximity goes a long way in lessening the blow of JML not wearing the unipron next year.
