i always thought that the avs gambled on the system staying the same as before (ie the player’s winning) during the lockout. Back then they only had to outbid the rangers, redwings, philly, dallas, and toronto on free agents.
That and they were old so all of their good players were in the process of getting paid, if you somehow aged detroits roster 3 or 4 years they would have had the same problems.
