Giguere On The Deadline
Shane posted this last night over at Avs Talk, but I thought I'd put it up here as well. Nothing extremely earth-shattering, but still interesting to watch.

i think there’s interesting stuff here — he all but admits that he wasn’t going to sell until this past terrible road trip. :O
Root root root
for the lightning. If they go on a little streak we could be in the 3 spot before our next game.

If I understand right
as long as we are in the top (bottom) 5 we have a shot at the number 1 pick, right? That’s the point of the “lottery”?
Does it really matter which position? Does the #1 spot get more “tickets” or something?
MHH: Like the Avs organization, we’ve now officially lost our minds.

yeah, basically. these are the odds that your team will be picked in the lottery. if you are picked, you move up 4 slots and those 4 teams ahead of you down 1 slot. that’s it.
the odds of retaining your slot are pretty high. i think they’re lowest for the #1 slot at just under 50%.
Although the NBA uses a similar system and the worst team almost never picks first overall.
Never given it any thought in hockey before because we were never bad enough for it to matter.
Shit.

since I doubt very much that we’ll be that last place team, you should be happy!
the NBA lottery is different too — there’s a much higher chance for lower teams to move up and worse teams to get bumped.
Ok
I’m completely confused. Since the Avs have never been this bad, I have never paid much attention to the lottery or the draft. I thought the lottery was between the bottom five teams to see who gets first pick. I’m not understanding this moving up and down thing.
An ounce of confidence can carry you a mile toward winning. Oh, and Red Wings suck.
Yes only the top 5 have a shot at the #1 pick. For example the Avs are the 5th worst team and the Isles are the worst, but the Avs draw out in the lottery. The Avs pick #1, the Isles then move to pick 2nd, the #2 team picks 3rd, and so on.
Now out side of that I’m not sure how it works. For example: if the Avs were sitting in the 6th spot could they draw out and move up 4 spots to pick 2nd (in which case the Isles would retain the #1) or would the Avs stay with the sixth pick no matter what?

Umm
Meant to add more.
For instance, is there just one draw, or does each team get a draw? So that means the 3rd place team could go up to 1st, but as well the 6th place moves into 2nd? Or what?
One team can only move down one spot, so I think that would preclude your scenario. I always thought the winner moved up and everyone else was reseeded accordingly, but having never been in this position before (ie caring about the last 10 spots or so) I’m not positve (oh except for being positive we will be in the top, er, bottom, ten). Positivity!
Get rid of the loser point
08-09 Avs- can we decline the penalty?
Yep
Any team that misses the playoffs has some chance of #1 in the NBA, although the worst team can’t slip lower than 5th.
I don’t have much confidence in our front office being competant enough not to screw up a high draft pick anyway…

Avs were sitting in the 6th spot could they draw out and move up 4 spots to pick 2nd
That’s my understanding of it.
