March 8, 2004 - Todd Bertuzzi blindsides Steve Moore. I couldn't bring myself to include a picture of the actual event, so I went with what you see above.

I remember

watching those guys at that game! They were cracking me up dressed as inmates and heckling Bootuzzi. I admit that incident is what got me into following the Avs on the internet. I was a huge fan before but wasn’t much into reading what other people had to say about the team until that, then I had to try to find whatever information that I could. I still can’t believe that that thug is even allowed on the same ice as players such as Sakic and Lappy. The NHL failed its fans the day that they failed to ban him for life.

It really is ALL ABOUT LAPPY!

Yes.

He still gets booed every time he touches the puck in the Pepsi Center, I have noticed that the tradition still continues at several other arenas around the league also.

Bertuzzi

The only thing fan from all over the league can collectively agree to hate.

That mother fucker.

I will forever hate him with every last fiber of my being. What a piece of shit.

It’s funny, as an Islanders fan I loathed him long before this awful incident. He goes on to Milbury’s well-established record of bone-headed trades, but what most people don’t realize is that he was a total enigma on the Island. He didn’t realize that he couldn’t get by on his hands alone — that he had to throw his body around. When his development was stuttering, the Islanders tried to get Clark Gillies to help tutor him, and Bert’s response was essentially akin to, “I’m not Clark Gillies. Leave me alone.”

Which was a bit petulant, to be sure. I mean: No one asked you to be Clark Gillies. They asked you to maybe listen to what a 4-Cup-winning power forward has to say, since he sort of defined the position you’re seeking. That’s when I got the sense that this guy was a wee bit flaky. When the Isles dealt him, I was no more surprised than I was years later when he’d finally become the forward people were telling him he could be if he bothered.

How ironic that he only became a star by finally adding that physical element to his game, and his star melted in a heartbeat when he let that physical element go to his head.

Hahahahaha *Deep breath. Hahahahahaha

That picture is awesome. Why the NHL let’s a criminal take the ice year after year I will never understand.

08-09 Avs- can we decline the penalty?

by TheRed on Mar 8, 2009 11:57 AM MDT reply actions

Hmmm, nobody defends what Bertuzzi did. It was wrong, but his punch pales in comparison with some of the cheap shots that have happened over the years. Tony Granato smashed a player over the head 2 handed some years back, the intent was much worse. Get over Bertuzzi, the end result was far worse than it was meant to be.

by Nuckels on Mar 8, 2009 12:08 PM MDT reply actions

The problem

is the NHL didn’t penalize him enough. Rest of the year was not nearly enough.

And FYI, I’d hate him even if it was a Dead Wing he punched. I’m sure many others here feel the same.

by Drakenlot on Mar 8, 2009 6:15 PM MDT up reply actions

Because he didn’t mean to break his neck its all right. If I get into a car drunk and run over your kid, seriously injuring him or even killing him, does the fact I never meant for that to happen make a difference. Does that mean I shouldn’t be punished for it. No, It doesn’t. The fact he was following him around all night trying to fight shows that the intent was to hurt him.

I went to that Halloween game when Bertuzzi came to Denver. That was such a fun night. Booing that turd, the creative costumes and the Avs winning. Fantastic!

What’s most tragic is how the Avs have swept the incident under the rug and only the fans and select media will acknowledge what happened.

I would sweep it under the rug too. It happened 5 years ago. Moore’s not coming back, Bertuzzi is on a different team, and I do believe Bert and Moore settled out of court.
It’s time to move on.

by Sean Zandberg on Mar 8, 2009 3:47 PM MDT reply actions

Actually

the suit is still tied up in the courts. Nothing had been settled out of court. Canadian courts seem to be even slower than US courts.

To say that we should just forget about it, to get over it, it wasn’t as bad as xxxx is rediculous. Unless you think that getting your neck broken and having your NHL career end is not a big deal, then yeah I guess you would say something like that. Because after all, there are a lot more worse things right? “It is what it is” right? Whatever… That mother fucker got off easy.

GO AVS!!!

by slapshotr2007 on Mar 8, 2009 4:33 PM MDT reply actions

It may sound ridiculous, but what are you going to do about it now? The sentence was served and that’s it.
In the future, a stricter penalty needs to be handed down though. He did get off easy, yes.

by Sean Zandberg on Mar 8, 2009 5:28 PM MDT reply actions

Which is why you shouldn’t forget it. No one should ever be able to do that and still play hockey.

by Drakenlot on Mar 8, 2009 6:18 PM MDT up reply actions

I don’t think anyone is saying to forget. It not possible to forget the incident. It happened. The odd thing is what exactly does “it’s time to move on” mean. We should stop booing Bertuzzi? Not gonna happen. MHH should stop posting stuff about him? Avs fans should no longer spew ire around the nets about the incident? Not gonna happen.

An ounce of confidence can carry you a mile toward winning. Oh, and Red Wings suck.

by texacogirl on Mar 8, 2009 6:22 PM MDT up reply actions

I guess it’s too much to expect. I’m not saying to stop boo’ing him.
If he’s truthfully sorry then forgive him? I don’t know. Sensitive issue. It’s not like Red Wings fans have forgiven Claude Lemieux. I have moved on with the Marty McSorley incident where he clubbed Brashear over the head with his stick. But then again, McSorley never played again, did he?
Fair enough. My “move on” comment is a loaded issue.

The 2008-2009 Colorado Avalanche: Slumpbusters

by Jibblescribbits on Mar 10, 2009 8:14 AM MDT up reply actions

You know

I still don’t like the guy, because (as Dominik pointed out above) he is a douchenozzle of the worst variety, but for this incident I’ve let it go

I mean yes, the NHL let him off easy hockey-wise, but he did not get off easy. He lost many millions of dollars due to this incident. He lost a lot from the suspension, but every contract he has signed since the incident has been less than he could receive had he not done it.

The incident also sent his career into a 3-4 year spiral that he may have finally recovered from with Calgary this season, which also cost him millions of dollars.

So the NHL botched the handling of him in a terrible way, but the idea that he hasn’t paid is a bit of a stretch. Plus he could still end up paying significant penalties to Moore in a civil suit. That’s deserved, but it’s also a significant punishment.

To this day

“Bertuzzi” is my favorite synonym for shit. As in, “Oh my god, I don’t feel so good. I need to go take a huge Bertuzzi.” It really works! So, if nothing else, the big goon at least added some color to my vocabulary. I still blame May, Burke and Crawford for the incident as well. And PL is an asshole for signing May.

My only problem with that is it might be a insult to the shit….

But I will make sure to have plenty of May around to wipe my Burke after taking a Bertuzzi. You want to wipe well so you don’t have any Crawford’s in your under-ware.
