KSE at least has noticed the storm clouds on the horizon. The horrible showing on the ice, stratospheric ticket prices, and the tanking economy added together mean that drastic measures are going to be necessary to avoid making next season's "crowds" look like those intimate gatherings in Edmonton and Calgary in the late 1990s. There already are signs that the parent organization will do additional "creative" marketing to put bodies in the building next season.
But general manager Francois Giguere continues to give off signals that he hasn't come to grips with the depth of the problems. Absolutely, part of it has to do with a survival instinct. He's not going to say, "Boy, do we stink and maybe somebody else should take a crack at this."
But I'm convinced this is NOT only a case of Giguere believing he has a better chance of staying on the job if he downplays the problems.
Couldn't agree with Frei more in his piece today in the Sunday Denver Post. The Avs need to wake up!
