Franzen signs 11 year deal
He's 29 years old, you do the math. No financial terms were disclosed.

So, can we just sign Hejduk to a 25 year deal and call it good? After a certain age a retired player salary doesn't count against your cap so you can stretch the damn thing out forever.
Let's sign Arnason to a 25 year 5 million dollar deal.....except we can backload it and that means he will play on the team so, strike that. Let's sign Sakic to a 3 million 75 year deal with 2.95 million as a signing bonus. I guess there's a league minimum so that can't happen I suppose. Some people are going to be all pissed off that Holland is doing this. Me? I'm just jealous.

The cap hit is 3.9 million per year. While it’s unlikely Franzen plays until he’s 40, it’s not out of the question, so I don’t see this as a clear circumvention of the salary cap. It would be nice if the Avs had this creative of a management group.
The Avs seem to have a cap on the term of contracts for five years. While I’m not a huge fan of these long term deals, wouldn’t it have been better to have given Stastny seven or eight years and lowering the cap number?

Stastny
is significantly younger than the Mule. At this point in time, a 7-8 year deal probably wouldn’t make sense, as his play probably wouldn’t be dropping off by the end. Look for one of these extended contracts in 4 years with his next signing (hopefully to stay with us).

Good for Franzen—maybe not good for Detroit. That guy is already having concussion issues.
Still, the salary does average out, so even if it is back loaded, it still counts against the cap just the same. I think…
I don't believe in Peter Budaj.

Yeah
If he retires, everything after that doesn’t go against the cap.

But Franzen gets to keep his cash. It’s a low-brow way of beating the cap. They pulled it earlier this season and people complained, but nothing was done. Instead, the league focused on revoking a 4th-round pick from Toronto after they’d already approved the transaction. Management FTW!!!

Well...
We do have a halfway competent management team in Pierre Lacroix. Now that the other half is gone, thinks look good….
Franzen is good, sure, but is he that good and worth all that? I don’t think so….

If he can hit 60-65 points per season, then I’d say yes.
If he regresses, then no.
