This Matt Duchene thing is getting weird

Ok, we all know that Duchene is an Avalanche fan, which frankly makes him damn near perfect.  Well,  besides being a great player on the ice, apprently he's good in the classroom.

Matt Duchene, Brampton Battalion

Duchene attended Turner Fenton Secondary School in Brampton while playing for the Battalion.  He maintained a busy schedule of six courses including Grade 12 University Prep classes such as English where he has achieved an 85% average and Canadian Law with a mark of 82%.  Duchene has carried an overall average of 85% and has been described by teachers as being a leader and a role model in class, always enthusiastic giving 100% effort, and always willing to take risks and to help others.

So, OK then.  He's like the perfect guy.  But WAIT, there's more!

Duchene is the first member of the Brampton Battalion to win the Bobby Smith Trophy.  Previous winners include Craig Billington (Belleville, 1984-85), Nathan LaFayette (Cornwall, 1990-91 and 1991-92), Ethan Moreau (Niagara Falls, 1993-94), Brad Boyes (Erie, 1999-00), and Steven Stamkos (Sarnia, 2006-07).

So yeah, that's probably going to put him in the good graces of someone that matters.  He also continues to do well in the playoffs, he scored another goal tonight and was named 3rd star in the latest playoff game against the Bulls.

I'm trying not to fall in love.  Ferris Bueller would have something to say about my first 3rd pick... or something.

Succumb to your feelings, Dario. Man crushes: all the cool kids are doing it!

Personally

I’d wait to start crushing until he officially puts on the damned ‘Unipron’. Someone in the organization could still screw this thing up….

MHH: Like the Avs organization, we’ve now officially lost our minds.

I think the only thing that would screw up getting Duchene

is if the Islanders or Lightning picked him instead of Tavares and Hedman, and then we would be “stuck” with one of them.

I don’t want to contribute inordinately to our collective (man)crush on this dude, but watching the NCAA finals, they had Tavares, Hedman, Duchene, Kane (don’t remember anyone else) on Duchene was easily the best spoken of the lot and showed the greatest intelligence and as best one could tell, maturity. Kane was pretty clever too and Hedman was impressive in that he did very well in his second language. Tavares, and you gotta give the kid a bit of a break given the crazy attention he’s had and the fact that he’s not even reached drinking/draft/driving age in many juridictions, sounded like the reincarnation of the Raycroft/Arnason stoner prototype. There’s no question that Tavares has wicked talent (and one could put together cogent argument to that effect with relation to Rayzor [I always found that name ironic given what a dullard he appears to be] and Arnasoft), the real question is whether he has the intelligence and leadership qualities necessary to a) fully utilize his talent and b) make the players around him better. Give me a kid with mad skills and the intellect of a SuperJoe or a Foppa as opposed to the kid with wicked mad skills and not a lot going on up top (cf Pavel Bure).

/ teenybopper swooning mode off. ;)

Duchene is smart

There’s a reason he won OHL Scholastic award this year.
