Tank it for the Avalanche Duchene!!!
The latest Redline report has Duchene as the number 1 pick in the draft.
I mean Tavares or Hedman would be flat out awsome..so why am I concerned we won't get Duchene over those two? I think it's because of Tavares work ethic and well Hedman would be great but man we could use a scoring forward.
We were meant to be Duchene, stop showing off by scoring big goals in the playoffs and just lay low man.

Actually, they have Hedman, Duchene and then Tavares in that order. The Islanders have scouted both Tavares and Duchene in the last two days. Duchene feels like the perfect fit for Colorado, but I certainly wont be crying if the Avs end up with Hedman or Tavares. I think the Avs are in a good position to end up with a damn good player.

Honestly
I think you’re just taunting SlamDunk into thinking we could get Hedman.

He’s on Team Sweden for the upcoming World Championships and he’ll likely sign following the tournament in May. Reports say it’s between Toronto and Dallas. I’m guessing Dr. Burke will win out.

Maybe they've finally realized
that Justin Pogge is not the goalie of the future.

Or they think
they could trade one of those guys as part of a deal for a 1st round pick in June?

I really don’t see how the Isles can back down from Tavares now. At this point, T has about 5-6 more months of hockey media love attached to him, he’s going to be the most recognizable name to more casual hockey fans. Even if he scores slightly fewer goals, or plays a worse defensive game, he’s an elite forward with tremendous PR upside. The Isles need that as much as any other type of asset.
The rearrangement of the top prospects here is the end result of nitpicking after watching the top players over and over again the past couple years.

I agree 100%. I definitely don’t see them taking Duchene over Tavares. MAYBE Hedman, but not Duchene.

ohhh please don’t let it be hedman. while he is a great prospect for any team, i think everyone here can agree the avs don’t need another bulky defensemen. i’d still have tavares over duchene… but hey, no matter who we pick, next season can’t be as bad as this season was… can it???
Fighting words
I think you and SlamDunk are going to get into a brawl here.
But I disagree with you too. If you look at every Stanley Cup winner since 1994 they almost all have one thing in common…. Norris Caliber Defensemen.
The only 2 teams that I can find that didn’t have them: the Hurricanes and the Lightning (and the Lightning had a young Dan Boyle FWIW).
Shattenkirk and Hedman… sounds like the foundation of a Stanley-Cup winner to me.
by Jibblescribbits on Apr 22, 2009 9:21 AM MDT up reply actions
Who did the 1996 Avs have that was “Norris calibur” Sandis Ozolinsh? :P That’s not to say that I disagree with your point. Just making light of it:)
For what it’s worth, with all of the solid defensive prospects that the Avs already have in guys like Shattenkirk, Cohen, Gaunce, Williams, Holos and the Bevy of young defenders already on the Monster’s roster, if Hedman did somehow fall to the 3rd pick, I could see the Avs trading away another of their defensive prospects for a scoring forward.
by c0nquistad0rian on Apr 22, 2009 12:31 PM MDT up reply actions
See my website
Norris Caliber is tough, but I should have said “elite”. Foote was an elite defenseman, but not in the points department. Ozolynch had a good season in ’96, but not a Norris one (obviously).
Either way, when i looked at it, I could only find 3 teams in the last 18 years who have won the cup without 2 elite defensemen: ’96 Avs, ’06 Hurricanes ’91 Pens, ’93 Habs.
by Jibblescribbits on Apr 22, 2009 2:28 PM MDT up reply actions
I don’t know about 91 pens (without thinking really hard…. Barasso?) but those teams had some pretty stellar goaltending to make up for the lack of two stud d-men. Not coincidentally, Roy played on two of those teams.
Get rid of the loser point
08-09 Avs- can we decline the penalty?
“but hey, no matter who we pick, next season can’t be as bad as this season was… can it???”
Granato is still our coach…

Haha.
This is just silly. Why WOULDN’T we want a stud defenseman? When our most physical defenseman changes from night to night based on their moods, there’s an issue. We need someone who is going to bring a mean streak night in and night out. It’s not as if our defense is so good and our prospects are such a sure thing to transition to the NHL that we’re clear to go ahead and stop building that area of our team.

Personally, I think our D has underachieved on a massive scale. What to do about those contracts would be the major stumbling blocks Not that I don’t think any GM could find room for a guy like hedman now, its more what to do if/when he wants/needs 5-6mil a year. Hopefully some contract space would be cleared by then.
Its all BPA though.
That being said, look at Chara. No one in their right mind would not want him now, but for a few years after he was drafted, people thought he was going to be a bust. D men take a little longer to develop, and the avs need fixes NOW if they want to be back in the playoffs next year. I don’t know if that is a reasonable goal, but thats what the fans want, so….
Get rid of the loser point
08-09 Avs- can we decline the penalty?
Yeah.
BPA, and if Hedman slides to 3, I think it’s him.
Everything else you said, I agree with. Like I said, it’s not an area where we can pat ourselves on the back and say “Job’s finished!” like an old-school SCV.
by A.J. Haefele on Apr 23, 2009 5:01 AM MDT up reply actions
Whats to say the Avs coaching wouldn’t turn Hedman into a moving pylon like the rest of the D.

I maintain a mancrush on Duchene
but a top-3 pick this year is as good as any year in recent memory. i will do a happy-dance no matter who we draft.
and if granato is no longer around to corrupt the youngster with idiocy, my happy-dance may turn into a full fledged ecstatic whiteboy trainwreck, possibly with flailing arms, depending on the proximity of those watching the spectacle.
Sippin' PBR on a Colorado game day...
Duchene is ours
Islanders arent going to pass up Tavares. Tampa just took Stamkos last year and now need a D-man in the draft. Like really take a look at their defense.
Isles can't pick anybody but Tavares
Can you imagine the PR the team would get if they didn’t pick him?
this is my thought as well: Tavares is a storied Junior talent, breaks all these records, everyone knows his name…and they DON’T take him? Their fans would go ape. I can’t even imagine the lost revenue in jersey sales alone.
It’s not quite passing on Sidney Crosby, but it’s close. Certainly Tavares is the most hyped prospect since Crosby, that’s for sure. Duchene will be wearing an Avs uni in June, take it to the bank.
That said, while I think Duchene fits our needs better and seems to be a smarter and more personable guy, how can you be bummed if Tavares falls to us? I am seriously going to be thrilled no matter what happens.
You say that...
and then we draft Nazem Kadri.

I'm just paranoid.
We’ve just suffered through BY FAR the worst season since they got the Denver and our reward is supposed to be an elite prospect who can help us turn things around and we happen to be in the Top 3 of a class that has 3 number 1 picks in most other years. PLEASE don’t screw this up.
by A.J. Haefele on Apr 22, 2009 4:45 PM MDT up reply actions
I am optimistic
We will have a competent GM. I’m not sure why I am optimistic (maybe all the Avs management talk makes me think we are being too harsh even though they do suck) but I think good things will begin with this next season.
I'm dreading that
Mainly due to thinking the Avs are going to trade away 3rd overall.
I will smash stuff if that happened.

Duchene jumps from 4th to 2nd.
Oliver Ekman-Larsson is really rocketing. he wasn’t in the Top 30 in January. In Feb he was 28th, March 23rd and now he’s up to 9th.

Here’s something interesting:
After a rare pointless outing in Game 4, Tavares received a dressing-room visit from New York Islanders owner Charles Wang and GM Garth Snow. The club won the right to pick first in the NHL draft in June.
“It was the first time I met them,” the 18-year-old Tavares said. “It was overwhelming to talk to NHL guys like that.”
They did send a scout to watch Duchene, but haven’t made him a personal visit like they did with Tavares. Keep in mind, that’s the owner making a personal visit.

“Keep in mind, that’s the owner making a personal visit.”
AND when the Islanders won the lottery, Ken Morrow seemed to indicate that the team already knew who they were going to take.

Uploaded today to youtube…

I hear he volunteers at the local orphanage and reponds to the bat signal.
He doesn’t always drink beer but when he does, he prefers O’Doul’s.
hahaha, i thought this was your tribute but it’s even better. He’s SO much more personable than Tavares…not that that matters, but, yeah.
It matters plenty...
This is our (God willing!) once in a generation chance to get the guy that will one day wear our “C” and be the next generation’s face of the franchise (apologies to SoS, but I need to see more to drink that Kool Aid – wouldn’t mind a SuperJoe/Foppa like tandem though).
Our choice is a) get the hottest, biggest scoring (though almost exclusively on the PP) and most fete’d player out there who can’t seem to string together much more than one semi-coherent sentence and who did very little/nothing to pull his team up with him in the OHL playoffs or b) get an all around player who plays all aspects of the game (God love the Baron – but check a bit wouldya?) and leads on and off the ice, who idolized this franchise and its (now) history since he was little, who has more between the ears than a mop of unkempt hair – and uses same to make those around him better.
Not that I trust the Avs’ braintrust to make the right choice, but I think any of us here could….
Hat trick for Duchene tonight. Brampton will face Windsor in the OHL Finals. Somebody posted over at HF that Wolski was at the game tonight.

LOLZ
What we are witnessing here is a love for Duschene (sp? ) fighting for a love of Hedman. Let the brawl begin.
An ounce of confidence can carry you a mile toward winning. Oh, and Red Wings suck.
Hedman does not know losing.
He will prevail. He will be mine.

Took you that long?
I’ve been creeped out by Slam for ages now.
2008-2009 Avalanche: It's like watching a car crash.
Can't we have them both?
The more I’m reading about these playeres, the more I’m thinking that I wish the Avs could get both Duchene AND Hedman.
Anyone think that Tampa may be crazy enough to trade the number 2 pick to the Avs for, Say Wolski, Liles and a first rounder next year? (Although, i’d rather see the team trade Svatos and Clark instead)
It would take some Savvy moves by the GM (whoever that is) by draft day. And I haven’t heard about anything like thise except for the 1999 draft when Brian Burke was able to trade for the number 2 pick (Vancouver already held the number 3 pick) to draft the Sedin twins 2nd and 3rd, respectively.
Burke started the process when Chicago won the draft lottery May 16. He immediately started talking with the Blackhawks in hopes of acquiring Chicago’s pick, No. 4. He did, trading defenseman Bryan McCabe and Vancouver’s No. 1 pick in 2000 or 2001 for the Blackhawk’s choice.
Then he moved that pick to Tampa Bay with the 75th and 88th choices overall for the Lightning’s pick, No. 1 in the draft. Finally, the Canucks traded the first overall pick and a conditional third-round choice in 2000 to Atlanta for the Thrashers’ choice, second overall.

Evander Kane
No doubt the Avs should take Tavares, Hedman, or Duchene, because that is the conventional wisdom and anything else would freak people out, but having seen Tavares, albeit on TV, at the World Juniors, and having watched Evander Kane in person, I predict Kane will score more points, and goals, in his career that Tavares. Haven’t seen Duchene or Hedman, but Kane is unreal.
Ya
Kane is the other mancrush of mine in this draft to go along with the walking beast that is Hedman.
